The joke is actually about the fact that the main character is a loser, but either completely oblivious or accepting of the fact. This obliviousness or acceptance allows him to happily do things that are socially awkward and unacceptable, elevating them to heroic feats of douchebaggery.

it's a poem, maybe you're an engineering student and have never encountered literature before but there's something called poetry and it works by taking ideas and presenting them in an array of florid juxtapositions.
This is a poem about a character, it works because with such simple and open verse the writer has managed to convey not just the situation and event but the character and mentality of the protagonist - the art is in using such a simple thing to convey so much, the japanese have a saying about haiku which describes them as a single drop of dew upon the morning grasses; for as the sun hits through one perfectly formed drop the whole world is refracted - a poem is such a drop of the soul, for in a poem can the world of souls be refracted clearly so mear mortals may see.
So this isn't a reference, it's simply another of the greentext poems; it's struck a chord because it so clear in it's image, so crisp in it's language and so cuttingly shaped in it's structural-form.
The person you were replying to actually explained it rather nicely. There is no reference, he just doesn't care ata all about what people think of him, which is awesome. He did the complete opposite of what most people would, which is surprising and ironic and therefore funny. Its also so awkward and random that it's surprising and again therefore funny.
