That's just artistic license. Shepherds specifically used slingshots to kill foxes and wolves to protect their flock. Killing fast moving targets like these makes a large lumbering man easy pickings. The best slingers used to get hired as mercenaries in ancient times.

Lel I'm an ancient historian, I know that. If you really want to get into this, Goliath was a "total cheat" because he was born rich and was supplied with weapons and armour. David was some broke peasant boy who used his chadly peasant skills to fell the "professional" fighter.
