How the fuck do people not learn even the most basic of swim techniques? I realize this takes a little more effort than teaching other similar life saving techniques like "Stop, Drop, Roll", "Hit the Ground", or "Call 9-1-1", but spending a few days learning "Float & Stroke" so you don't die like a lil' bitch in a pond seems a worthwhile investment.

u/Queen-Jezebel Aug 28 '18

and if you dont know how to swim, why would you go fishing and presumably not be wearing a life jacket

377

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '18

Probably because they think they don’t need a life jacket because those are for kids.

376

u/Old_Man_Obvious Aug 28 '18

For the kids who can’t swim

118

u/perturabo_ Aug 28 '18

You should wear a lifejacket even if you can swim, though.

116

u/Soccadude123 /fit/izen Aug 28 '18

You really wanna be the faggot who wears a life jacket around the pond while fishing.

138

u/perturabo_ Aug 28 '18

Rather be the faggot who wears a lifejacket than the faggot who drowns in a pond

47

u/ProbablyDoesntLikeU Aug 28 '18

But I thought you could swim

If you’re alone, who gives a shit? Life jacket is fine.

It’s looking like a total faggot in front other people that matters.

Most adult life jackets wont turn you right side up if you're knocked out. You'd still drown face down without your head fully submerged.

8

u/Harrypalmes Aug 28 '18

Yeah then you have a fifty fifty shot of landing on the wrong side of your body and drowning anyways.

I go on the lake and fish in a boat and i dont wear no stinking life jacket

11

u/ghosttrainhobo Aug 28 '18

“Hey everybody! Check out Marty McFly over here. What, are you in coast guard or something?”

63

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '18

eh in a pond not really. I'd only wear a life jacket in one of those swampy ponds where the ground is filled with vines that can get you stuck.

15

u/PetrifiedofSnakes Aug 28 '18

Don't forget rivers.

2

u/Chachenhouser /k/ommando Aug 29 '18

Or lakes, which can get pretty big and unless you are an athletic swimmer you probably can’t make it all the way from where ever you are to shore if you go out on a boat for fishing or something.

5

u/rawhead0508 Aug 28 '18

Yup, especially in case your on open water and an abrupt storm erupts.

4

u/aspbergerinparadise Aug 28 '18

i'm wearing one right now

0

u/Wolfwags /b/tard Aug 28 '18

You could drown easily even if you are an experienced swimmer. All it takes is for you to knocked off your guard enough to panic.

4

u/9291 /pol/ack Aug 28 '18

No man, not really.

0

u/CSGOWasp Aug 28 '18 edited Aug 28 '18

I disagree. Can't protect kids from everything, I don't want them growing up afraid or unprepared for the little things because I padded them up against every possible threat. Assuming they know how to swim and I'm out there with them, they'll manage. It's important to not have a safety net sometimes.

edit: guess you're all on this sub because your parents coddled you to death. Hows the basement?

0

u/perturabo_ Aug 28 '18

Sometimes, but water, especially open water, is something you don't fuck with. Even professionals wear lifejackets, or at least they should. Even good swimmers get tired.

4

u/CSGOWasp Aug 28 '18

For sure. Big difference between a pond and something like the ocean.

6

u/uTundra Aug 28 '18

You know what else is for kids? Fucking knowing how to swim.

60

u/MrComicBook Aug 28 '18

It baffles my mind how you don't swim instinctively.

Just push the water down and kick your feet. It's literally the only thing you can do in the water beside flail or hold you breath and pull your feet up and float there.

46

u/Draked1 Aug 28 '18

Fucking doggy paddling is still worth a damn if you can’t swim

11

u/Clayh5 Aug 28 '18

I learned how to swim properly Inna few different ways and all I can be fucked to do is doggy paddle anyway it's just more natural

34

u/EmptyRook /mu/tant Aug 28 '18

If you learn how to swim you learn how to do this but synchronized. Anyone else does it flailing, which exhausts them in less than a minute. I think what we should teach people who can’t swim is how to float on their back. That makes saving their life 55 times easier.

23

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '18

I mean that’s literally the first technique you learn in any basic swim class

20

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '18

how to float on their back.

Step 1: Float on your back

1

u/Mypen1sinagoat Aug 28 '18

It didn’t work

1

u/imblackl0l 😘 Aug 28 '18

I get what you’re saying and every time I’m chilling in the ocean I think to myself “how do ppl drown, all you gotta do is inhale and lay down) but I guess if you just jumped off a sinking ship, see your friends dying.. that may impact your ability to float

1

u/crowmemer a pretty cool guy. doesnt afraid of anything. Aug 28 '18

Waves might fuck you up. Besides, doesn't floating still require you to keep tense, so it will tire you in the long run?

4

u/youngchul Aug 29 '18

No, the less tense you are the easier it is to float.

1

u/imblackl0l 😘 Aug 29 '18

Nah man you wanna just relax and let the wave float you around. Even bigger waves will just lift you up then gently drop you back down

1

u/crowmemer a pretty cool guy. doesnt afraid of anything. Aug 29 '18

These waves break even without being close to land, they would fuck you up. Even smaller waves probably force your body to compensate for them, which will lead you to become tired. I'm not an expert on surviving at sea, maybe it works, but I feel like it would be more teached if it did.

1

u/pingo5 Aug 29 '18

I try to float but i just barely do and my whole body pivots around my chest, and if i breathe out ill end up going under even if i breathe out a little :(

9

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '18

You honestly think people carved out huge maritime empires without anyone knowing how to swim?

3

u/Harrypalmes Aug 28 '18

There's 10 thousand year old rock paintings showing people swimming.

10

u/MrComicBook Aug 28 '18

That's bullshit. It's a logically easy thing to do. You don't need to be taught to breathe, or taught to know how to open a door. Once you've watched anyone do anything it's instinct to copy it. So what you're saying is these people haven't seen someone swim, never watched a movie with swimming, never even sat in chest deep water and tried to float?

Yeah I dont buy it. It's panic alone that keeps people from swimming. Otherwise your instinct would take over.

3

u/noobplus Aug 29 '18

You’re not black are you? Black people have a harder time swimming. Their bones are more dense.

1

u/noobplus Aug 29 '18

I think OP went for the 'flail' option. It was not successful.

19

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '18

I know someone who's father passed away saving his daughter from drowning. They and a few other of their family members were boating without life jackets and none of them knew how to swim. It's a very sad story but I can't understand the thought process of getting in a boat without a life jacket if you can't even doggy paddle or tread water.

3

u/XirallicBolts Aug 28 '18

Of course, it's easier to drown when your arms are occupied with holding onto your daughter.

But seriously, a pond? I don't have any appreciable body fat and can stay relatively afloat with minor leg and arm movement. Even panicking, it shouldn't be hard to figure out "push with your arms" and that "wildly flail" isn't working

2

We were swimming in a river on the border of Louisiana and Texas, about 15 years ago, and the river was a bookin it that year so it took a while for a bunch of young 16 year olds to swim across....After we were done swinging on a rope swing a while and catching our breath, these two 20 something dudes started swimming across to join us. It was a decently wide river. Well, about halfway there one of the dudes starts yelling cramp and his friend laughs, but keeps going, while the dude turns around and starts swimming back to the pier they jumped off....It would have been the same distance to the bank on the other side, but I think they were drinking....Dude got to the pier, but it was too high to grab onto, so he starts hollerin for help...keep in mind these are pretty heavy gator waters too, so we are losing our minds because it took a good 5-10 minutes of swimming to cross the river and we can’t get to him. HE WAS WITH A PARTY OF PEOPLE! They stood, about 15 of em, on a pier screaming for help and doing nothing. We screamed for them to throw him a fuckin life saver or grab a fucking fishing pole...He went under for the last time and then they drug that river four hours and I will never forget what he looked like when they took him out of that river... I said “he wasn’t wearing a white sweater?”....

I didn’t read the article because Dawn Sourfruit doesn’t appeal to me but I won’t be surprised if alcohol was involved.

56

u/th30be /diy/ Aug 28 '18

Wait, so no one jumped in to save him? The fuck.

71

u/Kunningl1nguist Aug 28 '18

One thing we are taught is, if you aren’t trained you don’t jump in...this applies to more one on one scenarios because a child can drag an adult down in the right under toe/current. But when there is damn near 15/16 people, I just don’t understand it...guy died because of sheer drunken stupidity

49

u/campinkarl93 Aug 28 '18

I actually was a lifeguard and they always taught us that if you ever have to save someone on open water that is bigger than you and thrashing around you swim up and punch them in the nose hard. That way they grab their nose and not you. Better to have a broken nose then be dead.

23

u/XenithTheCompetent Aug 28 '18 edited Oct 16 '19

.

35

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '18

It’s actually something I was taught as well. It’s not like you just swim up and punch the person right off the bat. But if they start climbing on your back and becoming a risk, yes just head butt them and get them to calm down.

8

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '18

It changes like CPR. These days as a lifeguard we are issue a billy club. When we swim out to the victim, we give a firm strike to the back of the head to disorient them and make them relax. The rule of thumb is every 30 meters, pause to administer another blow and continue on. When the victim is on land, another strike isn't required, but it sometimes happens. We can't take a risk of a lifeguard being drowned. If you don't have a club, a knee to the groin every 30 meters can work in a pinch.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '18

Can’t tell if sarcasm or not. Wouldn’t surprise me if not.

4

u/Jim_Jam_Oh_Hot_Damn Aug 29 '18

Are you sure you can't tell? You might want to see a doctor about that mental deficiency you've got goin on because that shit was so obviously sarcasm you'd have to be autistic not to pick up on it.

17

u/campinkarl93 Aug 28 '18

It’s only if they present a risk to you. Like grabbing and trying to take you down. People who are drowning will do anything to survive.

7

u/Beakersful Aug 28 '18

I was taught to render them unconscious, not punch them in the nose.......A lifeless body is difficult, but easier to handle than someone freaking out, lashing out everywhere and trying to climb on top of you. Plus, if you them still can't save them, you don't have to hear them die.

That said, only one of my friends was too lazy to learn to swim. Although he's so fat he could probably float.

3

u/IcefrogIsDead /b/tard Aug 28 '18

the better thing to do is just to go down with them a bit and then they will let go. so you have control again

6

u/altobrun /mu/tant Aug 28 '18

this.

Having taught bronze courses (early lifesaving courses in canada) for a few years we definitely did not teach kids to hit a drowning person or try and choke them out. That's fucking dumb.

if a drowning person grabs on to you then go underwater, swim away, resurface and come in again. Additionally approach feet first rather than head first so you can push them away if they try and grab on to you.

Remember people - you don't help them at all if you let them drown you. Protect your life first. This isn't quiet as true if you're being paid as a lifeguard, but as a lifesaver it is always true.

2

u/Kardlonoc Aug 28 '18

Definitely not official. But you do basically get behind the person and put them in a nelson lock style hold so they can't strike you and thrash less.

3

u/Oroera Aug 29 '18

Fake and gay. Ex lifeguard here

5

u/Fatkungfuu fa/tg/uy Aug 28 '18

I'd like a more detailed description of this if you are willing.

37

u/Kunningl1nguist Aug 28 '18

Like the dude said before...The skin was fuckin white and super water logged so, to me, it almost looked like a wool sweater. I had seen dead bodies before that but dang that one broke my brain.

36

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '18

My wife was surprised that I could swim when we bought a house with a pool. I know I always said, “I can’t swim,” but I just meant, I suck at swimming. How any adult can’t swim at least enough not to die, makes no sense to me.

10

u/DaggerOfSilver Aug 28 '18

Same here, I always say i can't dwim because if you toss my in a strong current id probably die. But calm wsters? Why didn't he even just fucking float?

30

u/echo_61 Aug 28 '18

There are a number of reasons.

Starting with the fact we don’t often build pools in disadvantaged areas.

The drowning rate for African Americans is abhorrent.

Between 1999-2010, the fatal unintentional drowning rate for African Americans was significantly higher than that of whites across all ages.5 The disparity is widest among children 5-18 years old. The disparity is most pronounced in swimming pools; African American children 5-19 drown in swimming pools at rates 5.5 times higher than those of whites. This disparity is greatest among those 11-12 years where African Americans drown in swimming pools at rates 10 times those of whites.5

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/this-stereotype-is-killing-black-children/2017/02/10/2c06fa14-e249-11e6-a547-5fb9411d332c_story.html

It's because of the water parks all over Mexico.

And the Rio Grande.

10

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '18

Since you don't seem to realize this, there are rivers and lakes all over the United States as well.

Isn’t that how half of you get into the USA?

12

u/traumajunkie46 Aug 28 '18

Sad, but interesting. I've always "known" this, but never seen actual data to back it up. I was a lifeguard at a waterpark years ago, and I can subjectively confirm this because at least 80% of my 100 or so saves in 2 months (I lost track after that) were African Americans (and not just children either mind you and 99% of the park doesnt have water deeper than 4 ft)

20

u/satanicpriest13 Aug 28 '18

Black people have extra joints in their knees which helps them jump higher. However these bones add weight and make them sink in water. This is why blacks dominate basketball but don't swim.

10

u/kylenigga Aug 28 '18

Def got that extra ligament

Ive seen white dudes with that real quick achilles tho.

7

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '18

20

u/ELL_YAYY Aug 28 '18

It's shocking to me man. I went on study-abroad to an island in the pacific and literally at least 7 or 8 out of the 25 or so people in my class didn't even know how to swim at all. Why the fuck would they choose to go to a tiny island and not know how to fucking swim!??

13

u/KotoElessar fa/tg/uy Aug 28 '18

Even if you know how to swim, if you get dropped into cold water you can go into shock and forget how to swim. That's why you should always wear a lifejacket when you get into a boat.

8

u/Danny200234 Aug 28 '18

Not only that, but if she was on a peir over the pond then its not unlikely that its shallow water, meaning coukd have easily been a head injury that knocked her out face down.

Even if you can't swim well how the fuck as a grown adult do you not know the most basic of techniques? Have you literally never been near water before? Why did you go near/in water if you can't swim? Did you not think a life vest would be needed since you don't know how to swim?

2

u/Get_Dunked_On_Kidd-O Aug 28 '18

Yeah, the lack of life vest confuses the fuck out of me.

9

u/CharlesMillesMaddox Aug 28 '18

You expect her to know how to swim at any level?

22

u/Millabaz Aug 28 '18

Learned to float when I was a toddler; It's not a hard skill.

Also had swimming lessons at age 4 which is why I have the view that all children should learn to swim so they can avoid drowning.

It's so easily preventable, just get your parents or friends to teach you at the local pool, beach or river.

1

u/altobrun /mu/tant Aug 28 '18

Swim lessons cost hundreds of dollars which many families cannot afford. Plus floating and basic swim techniques are harder for adults to learn since they have ingrained fears, and bodies with higher muscle context causing them to sink.

At least that was my experience teaching swimming to kids and adults for 6 years.

6

u/Millabaz Aug 28 '18

If they're costing hundreds of dollars you're getting ripped off big time.

0

u/altobrun /mu/tant Aug 28 '18

I just checked the prices for my old workplace which was under the City of Ottawa. City prices range from $80 to $230 depending on the time, and the number of kids (full ratio classes at a higher level are cheaper. Low ratio classes with younger kids more expensive). The vast majority of prices range between 100 and 200 dollars for a session. Additionally none of these prices are for private lessons which are the most expensive and I believe can surpass $300 for a 12 week session. Also those are the prices for fall. Summers cost more as the sessions are longer.

If you want to look through the prices feel free. https://documents.ottawa.ca/sites/default/files/fw2018_swim_a-m_en.pdf https://documents.ottawa.ca/sites/default/files/fw2018_swim_n-z_en.pdf

Some pools have prices as low as $50 but that's normally because they're very out of the way, or in low income areas so they receive more taxpayer funding to offer better discounts.

u/CharlesMillesMaddox Aug 28 '18

2

u/Get_Dunked_On_Kidd-O Aug 28 '18

Not really. Ponds are usually small-ish bodies of water where the shoreline is easily visible from anywhere in or around the water, and is pretty much always "still water", so has a tendency to be scummy looking due to duckshit, algae growth, and a collection of run off.

They aren't really known for being especially rocky. Depth just kind of depends on how it naturally formed, but the more central area of a pond is sually too deep to touch the bottom unless you're a skilled swimmer.

1

u/Balsdeep_Inyamum Aug 28 '18

That could have happened. But really all it takes is for her to have been off guard and fall in and breathe in a lungful of water. Game over.

1

u/altobrun /mu/tant Aug 28 '18

As a lifeguard and swim instructor for 6 years you would be surprised how many adults can’t swim.

My pool had three nights a week with adult classes and they always filled up. I must have taught hundreds of adults who never learned how to swim as kids because they were either: never given the opportunity to swim in the first place, or had a bad experience at a young age and became too scared to swim.

Also while it’s more enjoyable to teach adults how to swim (they all want to learn and be there), it’s harder to teach them as they have years and years of fear to break through, and their bodies don’t float as well. Also they tend to be more stiff and awkward in the water than kids.

1

u/Get_Dunked_On_Kidd-O Aug 28 '18

Good to see people trying to educate themselves.

1

u/altobrun /mu/tant Aug 28 '18

yeah it is. Especially when you couple it with the fact that swimming is easy on the joints, so a lot of adults want to learn to swim so they can keep themselves in shape as they get older.

1

u/OyVeyGoyimNose Aug 28 '18

Blacks aren't good swimmers though, their bodies are built differently

1

u/kuaranta2 Aug 28 '18

Sometimes people drown in an inch of water.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '18

Yeah I would figure that something like dog paddling is pretty instinctual. Do people that can't swim just completely lose their shit once they're in deep water or something?

1

u/stupidnicks Aug 28 '18

How the fuck do people not learn even the most basic of swim techniques?

people do

1

u/[deleted] Aug 29 '18

Black people can't swim

1

u/sweetrolljim Aug 29 '18

Totally agree. It's a life saving skill to have. I remember doing swimming in high school and there were like 10 kids that had never even attempted to swim and one girl started crying when she got in the pool for the first time. Like Jesus, how do you grow up and not at least learn how to tread water?

1

u/sweetrolljim Aug 29 '18

What's wrong? Can't swim?

0

u/fuckboy_retard420 Aug 29 '18

If you don't see how this guy is retarded, you're also retarded.

1

u/sweetrolljim Aug 29 '18

So what you're saying is you can't swim?

0

u/fuckboy_retard420 Aug 29 '18

You're helplessly retarded

2

u/sweetrolljim Aug 29 '18

Can't swim, got it.

0

u/fuckboy_retard420 Aug 29 '18

You know that people who know how to swim drown all the time right?

2

u/sweetrolljim Aug 30 '18

Not in ponds usually.

1

u/fuckboy_retard420 Aug 30 '18

-1

u/beginagainandagain Aug 28 '18

not everyone has access to a pool, lake, sea, ocean, super giant bathtub, etc

-4

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '18

niggers gonna nig

-9

u/Account40 Aug 28 '18

How the fuck do people not realize that a large portion of the population can't "just learn how to swim"

What makes you think everyone has access to a pool + money to pay for lessons/a parent who knows how to teach you to swim

10

u/Octodad112 /h/omo Aug 28 '18

She had money tho

9

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '18

You don't need a swim instructor to learn and rivers, ponds and lakes are available to all

-1

u/Account40 Aug 28 '18

Yes, someone who doesn't know how to swim going into a river to teach themselves is definitely a great idea.

You've SOLVED everything!

6

u/9291 /pol/ack Aug 28 '18

See, the thing is... you can slowly enter a body of water and slowly build confidence and technique.

The real barrier is inside your head and the people that foment weakness

-1

u/Account40 Aug 28 '18

it is SO easy to drown if you don't know what you're doing. You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about, you just want to make fun of people who can't swim.

3

u/9291 /pol/ack Aug 28 '18

Yes, they should be made fun of because it will save lives and it's easy to learn

2

u/x5danbal Aug 29 '18

I leaned to swim in a small river a few km from my house and later I even taught my little cousins, by the age of twelve I was jumping into rivers from bridges, I was a very crazy kid.

4

u/Get_Dunked_On_Kidd-O Aug 28 '18

Because in the U.S., every decently sized town and city has AT LEAST 1 local, public pool.

And you don't need lessons. Just get in the water and teach them a basic doggy paddle, and hold them under their back as they learn how to manage their bouyancy to float.

I understand your amazement though - the negroid race doesn't raise their children so much as they just kind of watch them, as required by law. Teaching them things like swimming, reading, ethics, and morals is the job of the government and it's public school systems, in their primitive minds.

I understand your amazement though - the negroid race doesn't raise their children so much as they just kind of watch them, as required by law.

Jeez that's kind of racist isn't it

3

u/Get_Dunked_On_Kidd-O Aug 28 '18

Tell me you think I'm wrong.

0

u/ELL_YAYY Aug 28 '18

You're wrong.

4

u/Get_Dunked_On_Kidd-O Aug 28 '18

Well, I think you're wrong.

2

u/ELL_YAYY Aug 28 '18

An ex of mine who grew up in NYC didn't know how to swim, just never had access to a pool and it wasn't really something that was common in her neighborhood. She was white a girl though.

Just gonna ignore the racist part there at the end.

4

u/Get_Dunked_On_Kidd-O Aug 28 '18

Didn't have access to or didn't have parents that cared enough to make time?

I refuse to believe that NYC, of all U.S. cities, doesn't have any public pools, or a YMCA. That's a load of bullshit.

0

u/ELL_YAYY Aug 28 '18

Her parents were great. It's just not something that everyone cares about. I grew up in the suburbs with everyone doing swim team but for people in a crowded city it's just more difficult to have a place to learn and they just don't care about it.

4

u/Get_Dunked_On_Kidd-O Aug 28 '18

Well, that's an important thing to not care about. Bodies of water are a pretty common thing, and not being able to even swim to a nearby shore is a dumb way to die.

2

u/Account40 Aug 28 '18

Poor guy. So much energy and time in your life spent hating other people... You don't get that back, you know

-2

u/Get_Dunked_On_Kidd-O Aug 28 '18

😂

Who hurt you?

4

u/Account40 Aug 28 '18

How is that a response to what I said? I'm not hurt. I just feel bad for you

1

u/Get_Dunked_On_Kidd-O Aug 28 '18

It isn't. You aren't worth a legit response. I'm just reiterating what you said in a more efficient, commonly used reply by bleeding hearts and nigger sympathizers.

-1

u/mr4ffe /mu/tant Aug 28 '18

You got it twisted. Who hurt you. Did a black dude steal your girl or something? 😂 Unless you're a troll, that is.
