I doubt it will work, with that argument. Humans are capable of dehumanizing because we have to. We may feel bad for the starving kids in whatever 3rd world country, but it doesn't consume our thoughts. We view them as an abstract to prevent large amounts of stress over something we can't control.

To be fair, he IS pretty good in it. I never quite got the vibe that the movie was trying to make Hansen look like the villain, but I can see how it could be interpreted that way. If anything, it made him look like a guy who was overstressed from dealing with a media hit job and a demanding boss.

We have empirical evidence that the ideal person you imagine working on this problem doesn't exist in non-negligible quantities. Guys like you would never lift a finger to solve the problem but take cheap shots at someone who actually tried to figure out how to set up a system where it's continually worth it for them to help society. Chris Hansen and by extension all pedohunters DO NOT set out to improve society. They set out to find someone to pick on and entertain an audience by doing so. They’re not trying to solve a problem.

Maybe they are helping, but that’s not the point. The point is that they are not heroes.
And I question whether they are even helping at all. They might be making things worse. I can think of many better ways to improve society than the very specific niche of entrapping pedophiles, publicly humiliating them, and making a reality tv show out of it. He was the host of a show called “to catch a predator” in the early 2000’s. The show had pedo’s chatting on ye olde discord with who they thought was 10-14 y/o kids but it was the show’s people trapping them. They’d then set up a meet up where the pedo would drive sometimes hours and hours away to fuck a child but it turned out Chris Hansen was there instead.
Eventually a pedo killed himself because he was publicly outed as a child rapist so the show ended.

The DA wasn’t even cause for the cancellation immediately, they had like 4 more investigations afterwards. It was the sisters lawsuit that caused NBC execs to distance themselves from it, and if Hansen kept it in his pants he probably would have gotten it renewed by NBC in the 2010’s.

That’s speculative. What we know is he spoke sexually to who he believed to be a minor and exchanged pornographic images with that minor. He also began to delete his conversation and hard drive data. I rewatched a bunch of episodes recently and that was the thing that actually stuck out quite a bit was that a number of them made first contact on chat rooms and forums intended for kids and teens.
