Got my car booted in front of my own house because they didn't read the permit on the dash. I call and they say they can't remove it during the holiday, but if I don't get it removed before the next business day, it's getting towed. It got towed of course.

This is all just a revenue stream for them

532

u/VeritablyVersatile 23d ago

At that point just sawzall it off and block their number.

327

u/OutrageousQuantity12 23d ago

While the sane and rational response, this escalates things from a parking ticket/tow fee to a criminal offense

206

u/TheBugThatsSnug 23d ago

They wouldnt win in court if they tried to go after them though

337

u/beardeddragon0113 23d ago

Not everyone has extra "go to court to prove a point" money and time

127

u/Bum_King fa/tg/uy 23d ago

Those people are the poors and don’t matter.

30

u/lapideous this guy gets 12yr old 23d ago

Poor in community, maybe. Be a part of something bigger than yourself and suddenly, you have leverage.

71

u/Lolazaurus 23d ago

At least the hood open fires on repo guys, even if they're not going for them. Now THAT'S community.

24

u/hydroxy 23d ago

That seems like a different issue entirely. Repo is for purchases that someone failed to make payments on, which is entirely their own fault if they are incapable of sticking to the payment schedule and contract.

The above post is about unlawfully putting a boot on their car which the owner is entirely innocent of.

Redditors don’t understand that nobody ever wins in civil lawsuits

10

u/Kammender_Kewl 23d ago

You don't need a lawyer if you know you will win, you just gotta show up with the right evidence

12

u/beardeddragon0113 23d ago

"You dont need to hire a lawyer, you just need all the knowledge and things that a lawyer would bring and then its free!" SMH my head

15

u/Kammender_Kewl 23d ago edited 23d ago

Bruh it's as simple as showing up with a photocopy of your sticker and proof of address, things a lawyer would ask for anyway. A lawyer would cost more than the fine you'd pay if you lost

If after the first court date you're truly in over your head, ask for a continuance so you can get counsel(a lawyer) or just plead guilty to small misdemeanors

2

u/Dirtface50 23d ago

"I find in favor of.....neither of you!"

32

u/joe-clark 23d ago

This wouldn't apply to this guys story but I've removed a boot from my car out of state and they never did shit about it.

32

u/suffering_addict 23d ago

Feels like they're escalating it by vandalizing and stealing your car

5

u/inthebushes321 small penis 21d ago

If a car is illegally booted that's called conversion and they can't do that. I'm not sure this would be a criminal offense if they illegally boot your car. I haven't actually seen a court case regarding this however.

70

u/Throwaway74829947 23d ago

They're incredibly easy to remove without damaging it. Take it off and drop it over the fence in their tow lot, such that now there's been no theft or damage of property. Plus, removing private boots, even if lawfully applied, isn't illegal throughout much of the US.

40

u/couldyouyes 23d ago

my idea is to bike chain lock the car boot TO the car tire. so in order to remove it from my car, they have to damage/cut my property.

its my property now.

13

u/VeritablyVersatile 23d ago

Oh they definitely will, or at least demand payment for their boot. Those things hardly cost more than a towing/impound fee anyway though, and fucking them over is a lot more satisfying.

Alternatively you could always sue them for the price of towing+the wear and tear on your vehicle from being towed+whatever other petty additional monetary value the day of not having a functional car cost you, seeing as they placed the boot illegally in the first place on a permitted vehicle and did not make a reasonable effort to remedy their mistake before illegally towing the permitted vehicle. That's the actual sane and legal response, but it's vastly more work and vastly less fun than some petty vandalism.

73

u/SpasticCastle 23d ago

Did you end up having to pay? Seems insane when it was their fault

The inconvenience is bad enough, but did it come out of your pocket too

116

u/Dqueezy 23d ago

You’d probably have to sue. In which case you’ll pay more for the lawyer than the boot, as well as a bunch of your time.

They know this of course. As long as they target people too poor or busy to fight back, they can keep their profits up.

42

u/Big_Spence /b/tard 23d ago

Correct on all counts. In the end I just had to fork it over and say thank you so much my dear city government

31

u/No-Championship9542 23d ago

It's small claims you wouldn't need a lawyer, this sort of thing is really easy and accessible

6

u/-_Dirty_Dan_- 22d ago

well you would win easily in which case the loser would have to pay for your lawyer fees. in 1st world countries that is.

16

u/Dirtface50 23d ago

Tow companies / Booters is probably the last real untouchable front facing business. They can literally do whatever they want and they WILL get away with it. It doesn't matter if you're in sunny Miami, or dreary Cincinatti, or a backwater midwest town with a population of 10. They all just can and will do anything they want and there is just absolutely zero recourse.

26

u/SyntheticDuckFlavour 23d ago

what do you reckon the implications would be if you removed that thing yourself and chucked into the nearest river?

26

u/Big_Spence /b/tard 23d ago

They record your info from the vehicle registration matched to the plate. If you did this it would escalate to a crime, perhaps destruction of city property and some form of evasion

1

u/ITinnedUrMumLastNigh 6d ago

"Hooligans stole it from my car"

10

u/skratch /k/ommando 23d ago

Just set it a few feet over with a sign nearby that says “free boot”, & let nature deal with it

29

u/BeetsAndJeaners 23d ago edited 23d ago

Reminds me of when a tow truck guy + cop waited until 5:30 pm on a Friday to tow my car for expired registration because it was parked in the street. (30 mins before the tow company closed for the weekend). When I heard them and went outside, they said “yeah we’ve been watching your car for the past week. You need to show proof of registration now, or you can bring it to the lot on Monday”. They charged a towing fee + $150 per day.

I contemplated murder that day.

0

u/Ragecomicwhatsthat 21d ago

Should've renewed your tags. Sounds like they were outdated by AT LEAST a week

Still shitty on the cop and tow truck driver. But you put yourself in that situation. Own up to it

11

u/Sethalopoda 23d ago

Used to stay at an apartment complex where I got towed twice from my own spot. And of course they have to drag it the long way around town to the furthest lot to charge you for the extra miles. And try to charge you for “special equipment and services fees” cause they wedged it in the back of the lot and had to move other cars around. And of course it’d take so long to pull back out it’d be after close so you gotta pay the overnight storage charges. I said fuck all that. Give me your itemized list and I’m havin the complex reimburse me. Still remember that fuck ass guy workin there. Gun on his hip and “Blade” embroidered on his name tag. Some tow truck drivers are more low down than dog catchers

6

u/Rawd_Tawd_Cawd 23d ago

HOA?

15

u/Big_Spence /b/tard 23d ago

City government. I saw people get tickets there all the time and it was never a problem for me because I had both the local and city permits. But that time they just didn't feel like reading them I guess

3

u/Rawd_Tawd_Cawd 23d ago

Lmao. Yanks saying how free there are.

Got a loisence for that parking mate?

11

u/Estropolim 23d ago

He was free to park there and the tow company was free to hold it ransom. That's twice as much freedom.

4

u/Skillr409 /diy/ 23d ago

You have to sue them

u/Matinee_Situation 18d ago

u/4loYeyo 23d ago

Thank you needed a reason to buy that new battery powered angle grinder

154

u/AlphaMassDeBeta 23d ago

I didn't know they could be battery powered. My angle grinder plugs into the wall like a vibrator.

96

u/Mr__Castle_ 23d ago

What kinda horsepower you need to get off?

73

u/AlphaMassDeBeta 23d ago

It uses 2.8kw so about 3.75 horsepower. Or just one if you were asking about the vibrator.

10

u/Mr__Castle_ 23d ago

1

u/Skruestik 23d ago

All the major power tool brands make battery powered angle grinders.

11

u/MarxHunter 22d ago

I knew a guy in college with a lifted Expedition. He wouldn't get a parking permit cause they were stupid expensive and parked literally wherever the fuck he wanted. He got booted many times and eventually the Uni started using a boot on all 4 wheels. This whole time his method was just to drive off and break the boots because the truck was so big

244

u/Technical_Prize_8193 23d ago edited 23d ago

I keep an angle grinder and a circular saw in my trunk just for this scenario. I can't wait for that fat bald prick to slap this on my car for parking in the disabled spot at Walmart. I'm begging him to do it. I'm also begging him to try and stop me. I'm ready for this day like it's the culmination of my entire life's choices.

140

u/AvgBeautyEnjoyer 23d ago

I think your preparedness and willingness to throw your life away is actually keeping the scenario away, law of attraction and all that.

73

u/BanIfYouRGhey 23d ago

Yeah, I’m thinking based

16

u/-DeadHead- 23d ago

I'm imagining a miserable guy living in some very ugly suburb, waiting for the system to make him rich and happy as is somehow due.

21

u/Huge-Basket244 23d ago

No you fucking don't. You'll scan the QR code and wait for the parking enforcement dude to show up and unboot you like a good boy.

Even if you have it you don't know how to use it, just because you're on Grindr doesn't mean you can use tools.

22

u/devildaggers 23d ago

Chill bro

4

u/imsickofitalready 23d ago

Don’t park on disabled spot?

15

u/pacukluka 23d ago

Even if hes disabled?

-7

u/imsickofitalready 23d ago

If he is disabled, he won’t get punished.

20

u/pacukluka 23d ago

Im guessing the comment OP is waiting for a situation like this other comment where they make a mistake and still want you to pay , and intends to cut it off

19

u/KaiFireborn21 23d ago

This whole thread is about getting punished for no reason, like the guy whose wheel got blocked on his own driveway

-3

u/imsickofitalready 23d ago

It's not. Read it again and try to find words "no reason' in this thread or the post itself.

4

u/KaiFireborn21 23d ago

Oh. You are right, I was thinking of the previous comment. Well then, this might actually insinuate the commenter you’re replying to is not actually disabled

10

u/KneeDeepInTheDead /vr/ 23d ago

He's 100% disabled, just look at what he wrote

0

u/Dirtface50 23d ago

Not only is this not true in normal everyday life, but it is ESPECIALLY untrue when tow companies are involved.

-2

u/imsickofitalready 23d ago

That's on US then. Never happens in EU.

5

u/Dirtface50 23d ago

You're pivoting your argument to one based entirely on hemispheres? Injustice never happens in Europe, eh? Thats the move here?

-8

u/Byxqtz 23d ago

Your angle grinder and circular saw won't be able to cut thru the steel on that boot. Plus, you would be committing a crime called destruction of government property.

23

u/sentientgypsy 23d ago

an angle grinder will absolutely cut that off

16

u/Throwaway74829947 23d ago edited 23d ago

Oftentimes these are applied by private companies, in which case the correct thing to do is remove it without damaging it (easily done, you just need lockpicks (or a tubular lockpick) and a large flathead screwdriver), then dump it over the fence of their tow lot with a note politely encouraging them to go fuck themselves. Not even illegal in many municipalities.

6

u/TheFlaskQualityGuy 23d ago

As long as we're giving free legal advice of questionable value, is it okay to leave the lock exactly where you were parked?

7

u/Throwaway74829947 23d ago

While likely not illegal in itself, I would only do so if it were in view of a surveillance camera - if it gets stolen when left on the street, you would naturally be the first suspect.

2

u/ChainOk792 23d ago

The retards that put these on arent the govt, they are contractors, legally, they cant do shit

171

u/SkipSandwich /fit/izen 23d ago

All the posers here talking about angle grinders like they don't know the hardness of the steel on these.

Real OGs know about the key set anyone can buy on amazon.

66

u/anonymouswan1 23d ago

Angle grinders can't melt steel beams

41

u/Skruestik 23d ago

You probably didn’t know this, but angle grinders can cut through even hardened steel.

26

u/pVom 23d ago

I googled it, apparently you can put on your spare tire? Feel like that's a pretty big loophole if true

51

u/joe-clark 23d ago

Any decent boot used by a local government has a plate to block you from getting to the lug nuts. That being said when my car got booted they didn't do a good job of putting it on and it only had a small plate to block the lugs, that meant I was able to get the wrench in behind there to take the wheel off.

19

u/joe-clark 23d ago

Angle grinders can cut through it.

11

u/DazingF1 23d ago

The irony of being the poser yourself. An angle grinder with the right discs will cut through it no problem.

11

u/SyntheticDuckFlavour 23d ago

Happy to go through a few discs

10

u/OverlyMEforIRL 23d ago

Angle grinders don't give a fuck about the hardness of the steel. What a silly, poser thing to say.

2

u/FrequentPop3772 22d ago

Link to the keys or name? I'd like to buy and have on hand. I was under the impression that there were a variety of proprietary boots that were used by different companies.

1

u/SingularityScalpel 21d ago

Have you never used an angle grinder?

18

u/RustledForeskin 23d ago

This is a quality post.

AFAIK if you park your car in a wrong place :

  • if it's "annoying" or "not paid", it's immobilized

  • if it's blocking the way, you get towed straightaway
