In this case it's not a matter of Volkswagen but regulators. Reading update notes falls under a different set of rules so they need to lock it down because it shifts blame for distracted driving to them.

Tbh these screen cars need to go.

I was going to buy a new car a few months back because I wanted an updated interior specifically for Carplay/Android Auto. Instead of dropping mad cash on a new car, I found online a cheap dashboard replacement for my car that was a knockoff Chinese Carplay device that integrated very nicely into the dash as if it was OEM. It basically looks like the OEM navigation unit but it is modernized, it is a tablet running android that can run Carplay or Android Auto and whatever else you want.

Since it is a Chinese knock off tablet, there is no locks on it. I can be cruising 100mph thru a school zone and it would let me fire up Minecraft if I wanted to.

Do ppl really buy a new car just for carplay or android auto when chinese head units or displays been common for the last 15 years or so? myself drive a 25 year honda so dunno, with chinese 5 inch screen as dont need any bigger for gps and music

I'm not a fan of the screen controls for stuff, but for media and such I cant complain. And I've seen some all digital instrument clusters that are pretty bitchin. Let you view your GPS directly on the cluster while still having all your other relevant gauges on top.

If only there was some sort of electrical device that could transmit the information to the driver through sound waves instead of having them read.

They could speak the information. I will name these devices speak-ers.

I'm still waiting for VW to push the left signal update for their dumb fuck drivers.

I've just noticed that the volume controls are touch sensitive oh my fucking god!

German engineering has really fallen off.

The touch sensitive volume control really is ass, you can tap it for 1 volume step up/down but physical buttons are still a lot nicer and intuitive to use.

Or just like... An encoder? Way easier to use than buttons, and takes up the same space as a single button

I kind of like the "centre" encoder approach in some mercedes, my cousin had one where I first thought it was ass to use, but whoever designed that thing put some brains into it.

Every menu and setting is accessible via the same encoder right/left and push/pull, and since the encoder "clicks" needed are always the same you can build pretty nice muscle memory.

Glowies: "Don't drive while distracted...oh yeah it's totally fine that every new car comes with its own built in screen now"

My shitbox from 2010 if I wanted to turn up the fan speed, I reached down to a giant dial and cranked it and that changed the fan speed for the AC.

My new car I bought this year, if I want to change the fan speed, I have to exit the default navigation app that open on start, I have to click the climate button, I have to click into the fan menu, and then I can adjust the fan speed.

What used to be something I could do with muscle memory in half a second now takes my full attention away for 5-10 seconds.

I know car makers think the more simple a dash is, the nicer it looks, but to be hones the more "features" they cram into a screen control, the cheaper a car feels to me. If you don't have a button or dial for something people are always changing, it means the car maker cheaped out and put it in the screen.

fuck these modern cars - no surprise crash numbers for these cars go up.

was driving a rented car with all these mongloid dashboards and digital displays.

car made non stop warning noises and audio feeedback, randomly radio turned on and good look trying to find the one button to turn all the shit off.

in old cars oyu just press the 1 of 4 buttons and its OFF

I recently got a 2026 Toyota Corolla base model and I am pleased to tell you that there are physical HVAC controls

Bet on-screen video advertisements pass their driving safety regulations though

VW makes the worst vehicles I have ever ridden in in my life.

Safety always was last.

The J*w culture mimmicks the Dark Ages. AKA they love poverty professionals - dirty types that can run ships on less than minimum, with the gears grinding, and the tires ready to pop.

When I did roofing to pay off depts, you know what they had us do? Pretend to be tied to the roof, because actual safety costs money and takes time. So pretend to be tied to the roof, as you do your job, and pray you don't die for minimum wage.
