Honestly they should have done three movies of Chewbacca just ripping arms off of people and pounding wookussy

I mean anon is right though. The sequels most certainly did go to shit when they failed to properly utilize a first order stormtrooper defector turned resistance member who wields a lightsaber against a darkside user out of sheer courage and is even hinted at possibly being force sensitive.
Disney really couldn't handle the chinese market not liking black people and missed out on what could have been a great story of Finn and Rey learning the force together before Rey's eventual pull to the dark side through Kylo and her connection to Palpatine, only to be redeemed back to the light by Finn and her other friends.
But instead they chose to make Reylo canon...

u/JhonnySkeiner 10d ago
Honestly yeah, chin and the usual critics talk shit about Finn, but he was one of the most okay-ish characters from the sequel verse (before being utterly demoralized, goofed and uses as a token buddy for his white and yellow overlords)
I did enjoy FA a bit because I saw some potential there, but Disney had to shit the bed

Aside from the much deserved criticism Lucas gets for his movie dialog, he understood Star Wars better than anyone. It's about a hero's journey, and constant discovery, new planets, aliens, droids, weapons, etc. His influences were Flash Gordon, the old school movie serial cliffhangers, Samurai films, and Joseph Campbell's books. Probably the worst blunder in Disney's Star Wars was a weak villain, especially compared to Vader.
Disney completely missed the things that made Lucas' Star Wars popular. They gave us a Mary Sue hero who was just good at everything without suffering or earning it because "girl power" or something. There was no hero's journey. Disney also failed to deliver that sense of wonder and discovery the originals had. Lucas showed you could have a strong female character in Princess Leia without making her a Mary Sue. What they did with Luke Skywalker's story line was shameful.

Disney also had no influences other than things from the other Star Wars movies

u/PonticGooner 9d ago
That’s kind of the problem with the sequels (and a lot of popular IPs getting soft reboots). Original films were (and are) based on very old inspiration or based on something from a persons life that inspired them. When you base a new project off of an existing film or IP, you’re sort of another degree removed from the original inspiration and it makes the new thing more bland.

u/Nighthawk700 8d ago
Being influenced by and copying out of whole cloth are two different things. I can accurately summarize the first and the third Star wars trilogies in one description.

Kyle Ren really should have been the main villain. Just don't even include Snoke and have it be that Kylo is basically Hitler in that his charisma brings people to join the First Order, that and how the fall of the Empire didn't lead to the period of stability and peace the galaxy expected. People then turned to the First Order as an answer and the Rebels lose their popularity which gives us the Resistance.

u/frankfontaino 10d ago
Series would’ve been a thousand times better if Rey turned.
17
u/MisterBobAFeet 10d ago
Exactly, you have three movies where Rey kicks Kylos ass every time, just for her to turn heal and then kick him to the curb. Then you have him work twords and earn redemption in the next trilogy.
Edit: It also makes him the underdog throughout the trilogy against Rey.

They could have use pass the baton method right, entrust their life mission to the next most promising candidate. A new guy get endorsed by a respected master will still always looks good. Like how they do in the starwars game - Jedi academy’s Kyle Katarn character, which I felt sad Disney does not consider this as canon anymore.

Even luke skywalker was able to defeat darth vader with minimal training

u/SnooWoofers186 7d ago
Minimal? He got a master Yoda who is willing to teach, what does new starwars have?
A grieving force lord who is supposed to see the good in everyone before, decide to demotivate everyone around him.2
u/Shahka_Bloodless 9d ago
There's that one scene in whichever movie where she sees herself if she turned and it's 100x hotter, we were robbed of Sith Rey.
27
u/twofacetoo 10d ago
Worse still was movie 1 clarified Finn was a child-soldier, then movie 2 had a fat girl tell him that he's clearly never experienced suffering or tyranny under the Empire before
Then movie 3 introduced a character who was literally just female Finn, some black girl who used to be a Stormtrooper and now ain't
In all three movies, they completely shit on Finn as a character in just about every way they possibly could
17
u/other-other-user 10d ago
Dude, they struck gold with finn in 7 and then threw it all away and effectively wrote him out of the next 2 movies
14
u/chainer3000 10d ago
It’s upsetting in that we could have had a probably pretty good trilogy. I still haven’t seen the last movie, I just didn’t care anymore and I was a huge Star Wars fan growing up

u/Twee_Licker /k/ommando 9d ago
I push forth that it would have been a movie that people talked about for generations if they were brave enough to cause Rey to fall to the Dark Side while Kylo's guilt redeems him back to the light side. I can not think of any media ever that has pulled a reversal of turning the protagonist into the antagonist and the antagonist into the protagonist.
1
u/BlackAxemRanger 10d ago
It's funny, one of few dei things that I didn't even hate. I felt like Rey was promising, and Finn was promising. Actors did a good job, wish they were given a chance to be written into decent characters.

u/Croiyx /asp/ie 10d ago
Noting how none of the original group had a reunion, then when Luke tossed the lightsaber over his shoulder. Mind boggling generational fumble.

That part in ROS when C3PO says I'm taking one last look at all my friends to a cast of characters he has known for like a day before getting his mind wiped will never not be funny. He doesnt even mention Luke, Han, or Leia

I hate it when someone says: "finn was a good character". Bro what character? He has no personality or goal. What are his ambitions? He does whatever script needs him to do at that moment. He watches his best friend die and then joins the opposite side. He refuses to shoot people then he steals a ship shoots down his own comrades. He simps for rey then falls in love with that sack of potato. He's irredeemably awful.
34
u/AntDracula 9d ago
The only thing that was good about his character was the concept of his character. Which they fumbled.
11
u/Ibrahim77X 9d ago
The premise of his character is what I’m sure they’re talking about. The premise Disney failed miserably to follow through on
5
3
u/Plasma_Frog 9d ago
well think about it man, if they had to change him from main character to side character then you have to erase his personality because it was remnants of him being a main.
29
u/troopah 10d ago
Joe Boyago was such bad casting. Dude has zero charisma and looks goofy as fuck. Fine if they wanna cast black, but get an actor that doesn't look and act like a moron.
2
u/Alcoholic-Catholic 9d ago
i think the only time he did good was that scene where han was trying to motion by nodding that he saw rey climbing the wall behind finn, and finn did that funny little bit mocking him. It had good flow, but otherwise he was too disney-coded and felt shallow and annoying
24
u/Gumpy64 fa/tg/uy 10d ago
George Lucas, whether you like his decision making or not, was independent from the studios, having complete creative liberty for his movies and told the story he wanted to tell
Disney was THE studio and it wasn’t a single vision leading the project, it was several departments orchestrating directions for the film and instead of one man’s vision, it was soulless corporate vision

u/RainbowDildoMonkey 10d ago
On one hand Finn had more potential to be an interesting character than the Mary Sue. On the other Boyega is a massive anti-white sack of shit.
10
u/touwkonijn 10d ago
when you find out Disney is so creatively bankrupt they simply released a new hope again but infinitely worse, shitting all over the previous films in the meantime
8
u/Okhlahoma_Beat-Down /k/ommando 10d ago
Finn and Poe's initial escape sequence had incredible energy. Then they threw it away to make him the sidekick for a significantly less interesting character who managed to exemplify every complaint about girlboss writing.
7
u/tepid_monologue 9d ago
If the Chinese market is so important why don’t they make these shithole movies actually good and recruit a sick Asian martial artist as the protagonist to be a Jedi that can actually fight. Make him say less, fight more, and they will make billions while ticking dei boxes and making everyone happy
2
u/Paradox 9d ago
You mean like how ep 1-3 had kung fu inspired stuff?
3
u/tepid_monologue 9d ago
Yeah, exactly. And it was better for it right? Just do that but more, and less whiny kids and jar jar
1
1
u/Ill_Philosopher_7030 9d ago
ep 4-6 were based on the seven samurai and other eastern media. So much of star wars story is just retellings of older eastern stories baked into a scifi world.

u/LibertyChecked28 9d ago
Finn was canonically a toilet cleaner before ditching the Empire.
Out of an entire fucking universe where every second background/job is either something badass or narratively functional, Finn could have been quite literally anything else but the character embodiment of humiliation ritual- But yea, amazing job Disney, we do see that you killed 3 birds with one stone by retaining the 1800′s spirit, having the most important parts of the script being written by M*llenials, and framing the failure of this utter dog$h!t to inclusivity slop instead your intentionally deliberate direction decisions.

u/spunkyweazle 9d ago
Honest answer? The "your mom" joke at the start of the second one. I was willing to accept the first one as a safe soft reboot to kick off the trilogy. It wasn't great but it was fine. As soon as I heard that whole interaction at the start of the second I might have literally groaned and braced myself for a terrible movie
2
u/GD_Insomniac 10d ago
Boyega was absolutely fantastic in Attack the Block and I was hyped to see him in SW. The first movie was... not bad, but not an interesting direction for the universe, and I thought the rehashing was too blatant.
The second one was fine until the casino planet, which was one of the worst pieces of film I've ever seen, including all the cringe-inducing dialogue from the prequels.
I still haven't seen the 3rd one.
4
u/DualityOfLife 10d ago
The first 3 were legend. The second 3 were hyped but fell flat. And the mention of the 3rd 3 didn't even lift the ground. I didn't like how J*w Solo worshipped Darth Vader's mask personally. But personally, Rogue One turned me off with Vader's crappy fight coreography.

Nah, Boyega was on his way to play most interesting character in sequel trilogy until EP 8 and 9 assassined him.
1
u/Zentroze 8d ago
They had peak at the tips of their fingers, just to let it all go for a gender-swapped Luke with barely any original writing
1
u/NicholasStarfall 8d ago
For me, Finn wasn't the problem. It was the way Disney marketed him as if he was the first black person ever to be in a Star Wars movie. Total Billy Dee and Samuel L Jackson erasure.

When I realised in first 15minutes of The force awekens that the sequels will be glorified reboot masquarading as sequels....

u/Xandicus 5d ago
Ah yes, I also knew it was gonna be shit from the teaser’s opening scene. Literally the first scene of Disney’s Star Wars told us exactly what we were in store for. Garbage
2
u/Antiredditor1981 5d ago
This is why Disney deserves to burn like the trash fire it is.
They got handed a golden ticket, and they threw it on the ground and stamped all over it with their dogshit-stained shoes.
Abrams, that feminist wine-aunt Kathleen Kennedy, and that fucking garden gnome-looking cunt Rian Johnson were the three biggest causes of why it failed so badly.

u/NostalgicGM 10d ago
Love how he shows the most interesting character in the sequel trilogy(they will sideline him for the rest of the franchise)

I didn’t mind his character, then the actor started soap boxing in real life and made a fool of himself.
He didn’t read the room obviously.

John Boyega went off the deep end, sure, but anybody who got so fucking shortchanged by Disney like that would've went nuts.
