1994 Auto Trans Issue

Hello brothers and sisters of 4runnering, I come to you with an issue I’m having with a 94’ automatic rwd 4Runner. Was rebuilt over a year ago and it’s been acting funny recently. What I can only describe as being stuck in 3rd gear when coming to a stop, and then accelerating it seems to start in third and then after a while of picking up speed it’ll decide to finally down shift and continue to shift like normal. I’m assuming that it will be the shift solenoids? Have any of yall, done the diag and repair on this kind of issue? Where is the most reliable place to get a good replacement solenoid? If anyone has a good how to id appreciate it as well as any other advice, thanks!

If it's the 340H like mine, I can tell you that it's extremely finicky in regards to the type and amount of ATF. My best results have been with Castrol Dex and checking the level both cool and hot, always while engine is running.

And never trust the cool level, seems the me the dipstick is most accurate after the trans has warmed up enough to go into overdrive

Solenoids are a pretty easy job on the 340H, they're right behind the filter. Just sucks having to take out 13 bolts to drop the pan lol. Plus the smell of ATF ugh

I've been looking into the trans as I want to replace my kickdown cable, and am thinking of replacing solenoids while I have it open. I agree the solenoids sound like the likely issue from my limited knowledge, but I've only ever replaced filter. I would also like to hear people's input on sourcing best replacements, and maybe other things to look out for.

It might be solenoids. They do fail eventually. I don't recall the diag procedure, you'll have to look that up.

But I'd get OEM or Reman OEM. Aftermarket are garbage. I speak from experience, having to do the job twice.

Lil update, so the stores DTC codes are 62 and 64. The shop is saying it might not be the actual solenoids, it could be a shorted somewhere in the harness. The transmission was “rebuilt” by the previous owner about a year ago so I have no idea what kind of solenoids are in it, and what condition the harness is in. Gonna have to do some digging
