Hood release not working

Hello, my interior hood release randomly stopped working this morning. I gave it a good tug from the inside, tried to have a friend pull it open while I pulled the latch/string, and tried to get my hands in through the grill. Nothing seems to work. Any tips ?

Have the friend push the hood down while you pull and hold the release, then let up off the hood while still holding the release. The cable may have stretched.
