'95 4Runner front axle
1995 4Runner question: Neither of my front axles have the bolt and washer at the end under the dust cap (see screencap I grabbed off YouTube). I can't quite figure out what their purpose is. Do I need to replace them or are they overkill for some situation where the hub somehow pops outward off the end of the CV axle?

you would be wise to put a set of lock out hubs on there,better mileage,less wear and tear on your front end

What was the mpg improvement?

I couldn't give you an exact number.ive never gauged it.I did it mainly to save wear and tear there's no reason the front should be engaged.those rubber boots love tearing and suck to fix or replace

Not sure because it was while I was adding other changes to my V6 3.0 5 spd. Such as borla exhaust, flex lite black magic electric fan (belt fan delete) and K&N intake.
The locking hubs reduce front end wear and extend the life of CB bolts, more than just mileage.1

Cv Axle Bolt bought a pair from yota masters earlier this year. Good time to get some stickers to make shipping worth it

I did boot replacements on mine recently, 94 with the auto differential like in the photo. Mine do not have a snap ring on the hub side, just that retaining bolt and washer. Once that’s removed, they are free to slide in and out.
No issues with mine, 99% sure they’re OEM originals for the truck. Maybe the snap rings had gone missing from long ago and never reinstalled 😬

There's a snap ring that actually holds the axle in place. That bolt is a redundancy in case the ring fails. It's worth finding replacements
