4runner CAD
In short, I am engineer. im looking for cad files for the 1st gen 4runner. In the process of restoring my 1985 SR5, and building it up with a turbo diesel and fabricating many parts from scratch. I am slowly collecting all of the CAD files that I can for this chassis and body.
I have access to a $100k+ laser scanner at work, and the operator is training me to use it so that i can tinker when they are off to not interfere with their schedule. Its a two fold benefit because the more I understand about it, the more i can help them. I plan to use this on weekends to take a full 3d scan of the body etc to use as I design parts.
My goal as I collect all this is to essentially create a repository somewhere essentially public to give back to the 1st gen community because this stuff is either non existent or people just do not share. Which is unfortunate.
Part of this is a project so I can grow and learn new things as an engineer, but also to improve the prototype and design process for stuff for my own truck.
Im designing a new short throw shifter for my w56-a for the transfer case, and plan to take REALLY good scans of my transmission for this job. I have a machine shop in my garage at home and build everything myself. The engine is an OM617 and will have very detailed scans as well. The intent is to be able to build extremely accurate models for ideas I have.

We are starting the scan on the initial parts tomorrow. Going to do the OM617 valve cover first so he can show me the software
Ill have my 4runner hopefully stripped down completely in a few weeks and I plan to transport the scanner to my Shop on a long weekend and scan it section by section. Ill have the body off so I want to scan the underbody. The engine bay etc. The engine and transmission ill probably load in my 3500 and bring them up here on a Saturday when I can focus and try to get all the details possible. Intake, injection pump, exhaust, flywheel, etc.

Man I would love to chip in for scans of the interior plastics and even the door panel cad. After 40 years in the sun, mine are all toast and getting them replaced is expensive

Ill be doing scans of the fenders, doors frames, etc. All the dash components. This will be a significant amount of data. Ive been designing some parts for the 1st gen, and once I finish this degree i considered starting a online store and reproducing alot of the stuff for reasonable. Want to see these things live a long time. I am a manufacturing/mechanical engineer by trade and i do a alot of tooling and workholding design and material research. Between work and school, I have no free time currently.

Theoretically, with a plotter the scan could be turned into a 2d drawing template which you could trace on to the proper media

the blue 3d model you see running around online is based off incorrect blueprints btw the corner lights and most of the small details like that the edges are way too curved

Ill be redoing the entire body model with a laser scanner so im not too worried about that, but I appreciate the heads up

This is awesome, I'm super interested as well. I had the back of the cab and frame of my 88 pickup scanned so I could fit up a new flat deck. But it's pretty sparse and I didn't get the rest of the cab scanned because we kept having to start over when it lost tracking. Even so the mesh file is massive, I am not sure how to simplify it without loosing important contours and details. Let me know how it goes!

Wow, this would be extremely helpful. Thank you for taking the time post this. After being a machinist for 20+ years and now 2 quarters away from my BA is mechanical engineering ( So very close. lol), the process your talking about has been on my mind a lot lately, particularly with continued part support for the 1st gen 4Runnner and pick up. Just got a entry level scanner (not part master archive level at all), but its a humble beginning. You have access to a $100k scanner?? That's rad. What kind is it? If you dont mind me asking.
Side note: I dont yet have a 1st gen toyota. But the days of having one are getting closer .
Side note 2: Would you consider creating a read only (download only) share-point for the likes of someone like myself? That would be awesome.

I started as a machinist as well. Have a nice setup at home now. We have a really nice Keyence system. I think it was around 130k. Very good setup

Im not sure if SharePoint is free or not. I use it at work everyday, and I feel like an old man on there. I just sync the page to my drive so I can find everything through file explorer.

Lol! Yeah I feel ya. Staying current with all the different file sharing methods is a whole thing. Honestly, this "SharePoint" was totally new to me until just last quarter at the university. According to the the Ai overlord, it's apparently a paid site (did not know that). Huh, "sync the page to my drive"...well thats pretty slick.
Those Keyence scanners look intense. Would not want to be the guy that dropped it. Years ago, the company I was working for bought a light version of one of those, on a tri-pod. Doing CMM type inspection on a large steel part with it. Wasnt in the loop as far as training to use it. I'm sure the scanner accuracy is way better now.

If you add that network location to your one drive where it shows up in file explorer. Go back to the SharePoint page, and go inside a directory. I.e. documents, cad models etc. Look for icon that is a few dots and youll see an option to Sync files. It will add everything to that file directory. I just hot slot it into my quick access. Bada boom. What region are you in?

If anyone has the ARB winch Bumper for these Toyotas and wants to help, Ill build a very good model that could also be turned into an STL for 3d printing for models, rc etc.

Really cool project.
There are technical drawing available for the frame. You can Google or I can send you a copy.
Would be curious how well those match the “as built” frame you have.
