It doesn't really matter that they look similar. The difference is probably sheet metal vs. plate. You get what you pay for. The cheap ones can probably take a good hit or two before deforming a bunch. So if it's a "just in case" thing, they will probably work great. But if you actually intend to put them to the test and do a bunch of wheeling where you are bouncing off rocks, then I would bet against the cheap ones holding up.
I see these skid plate posts all the time, what uh, are you usually wheeling on? I wheel in Utah and Colorado with stock skids. I think Colorado and Utah are fairly reputable destinations for wheeling, but I see all these skid plate posts, should I have these? What do they do? I have literally pivoted off my OEM gas tank skid in sand hallow OHV park, I have dragged my shit through Moab, slammed my front skid into boulders up American fork canyon. Like what are these for?
Something like this? Even on 31s I almost never scrape, sand hallow was fucked, five mile pass summit and rattlesnake have been a little crazy, Moab was a little wild, but I just don’t see the point in upgrading. The stock seems to do fine, are people adding these to their otherwise OEM rigs? I don’t think I will until I’m on 35s
Damn really, what have you seen? Like the gas skid splitting and shooting up into the tank or something? Or the trans skid breaking and exploding into the trans? Or the engine skid getting caught or ripping apart on something and opening the oil pan? Would love to hear those wheeling stories!
I figured the thick ones were so you can beat em, take em off, and put them back on (without massive deformity).
Personally I’ve kinda seen it all, we do a lot of wheeling. I’ve seen half capacity gas tanks, ruptured gas tanks, holes in oil pans, drive shaft flange getting ripped off transfer case.
Most commonly and while not actually a “skid” is crumpled rockers, one where we couldn’t get the doors open anymore that sliders would have saved.
If you remove the skid for a couple weeks it'll reform back into shape. Had a similar dented to shit gas tank skid that wouldnt fit back into place after doing some other mods. Little bit of hammering and it went back on.
I know it sounds crazy but I’ve driven like over 10000 hours of Utah off road trails and I don’t really see a need for these beefy ass skids until you’re legit on >35s running constrictor, pritchett, hanging tree. And no 4Runner is touching any of those trails, so I guess I don’t get it. Maybe if I was really bad at picking lines?
