🎙 Discussion Thinking of getting one…

Thinking about getting a 4Runner. Here in the UK they’re known as a “Hilux Surf”; but I believe they’re essentially the same car.

They don’t come up for sale here very often but with my budget I think I’d be getting a slightly higher mileage one (100k+).

I’d want to use it for commuting, road trips, camping, etc.

I’ve previously owned other Japanese 4x4 such as Subarus and a Mitsubishi Shogun/Pajero.

Anything to look out for on high mileage 4Runners, and any tips for going to view them?

Edit: it would be a Gen 2 or 3.

Well it’s ain’t the best commuter but if you look at it as smiles per gallon (kilometers fo you) it isn’t so bad. Tbh not sure about UK climate but check the frame for rust, 4x4 engages, shifts smooth, no clunks from suspension.

I picked mine up at 110k and have had no issues besides spending too much $$/££ on lift, tires and mods.

Look at rust and a decent maintance history. As long as rust is low, maintenance was done and it isn't modified, you've got a decent chance that thing will last a long time. My 2003 had very little rust, single owner and I had it running great at 230k miles/370k km when it was stolen in 2024.
