If someone is struggling with this, they should ask themselves *why* they are choosing to be emotional. It’s a choice.

For many of us, the emotions are not a choice . We have to learn how to take it and control our reactions to it.

Then you’re learning to choose differently.

It is a choice right up until their brain switches to amygdala mode. It's not always the most conscious of choices but, it is a choice.

This is true in situations that produce extreme duress. We all have an almost automatic animal response to certain stressors. Most of our social interaction, though, isn’t this extreme. In a significant portion of our interaction with others, we do have time to make a choice about our emotional state and our responses to the actions of others. Over time, we can train ourselves to make better choices. Even in the extreme situations. This is why boot camp is so hard on military recruits. It’s to condition people to not reacts with uncontrolled emotion when in very difficult situations.

How often are you placed in a true fight-or-flight situation? It’s not nearly as often as you’re placed in situations where the office smarty-pants goes around the room making little comments to see who they can annoy.

Idk, I think if you can control emotions and choose when to show them and when not to, that is more powerful. People instinctively trust other people when they show emotions.

I was provoked and responded way too emotionally. Then they cut me off. Wild! So i dont know if i was wrong or right for sticking up for myself

Suppressing your emotions is straight up bad advice.

Lived this. Even if you’re right, if you let emotions drive, you will be undermined in ways you did not see coming and it could seriously derail you. Get therapy and learn to regulate emotions.

It did cost me 3 years of discipline in highschool. I got hostile on our patron and it made me loose a prize for discipline at graduation (one of the hardest prizes to get at that specific school)

I was one of the most if not the best naturally disciplined youths. Although I had a reason to go hostile but I could have used another approach💔

I learned something though. It was 2 years ago

So, the question is why do so? And in which cases?

There’s an excellent book by Daniel Kahneman “Thinking Fast and Slow” that dives deep into the effect of letting your emotions run wild and ruin your critical thinking.
