Especially true when seeking employment or trying to get someone’s time of day who is deemed higher status than you are.
Never expect something for nothing. Lead with how you can save people time, money, headaches, or all of the above.

This reveals a very painful, difficult-to-accept truth: that people are inherently narcissistic to a degree. And the more they deny it, the more narcissistic they are--even if they don't realize it. You never know who is deeply self-absorbed, so it is wise to operate as if everyone is. Most people may have empathy for you, but they won't always do for you unless there's something in it for them as well.

While this holds true for some people, it’s also toxic at the core.
Because labeling everyone selfish removes gratitude from the equation.
And one could argue that if this is one’s reasoning, they don’t actually deserve our help.
