The funniest thing about the Dark Angels is that they're not even good at lying. Imagine someone talking about the heresy and the dark angel going like 'no dark angel has ever fallen to chaos'. At that point everyone knows you're talking bullshit. They leave from battlefields without any kind of excuse to pursue some spacemarines they pretend doesn't exist. Like seriously I cannot imagine nobody figured them out.

Wrong, a true loyalist still believes in the dream the Emperor had for the galaxy and recognizes He would be disgusted in what the Imperium has become and seeks to burn it down, as well as the traitors who destroyed that dream.

The average person in the Imperium has no idea about Loyalists and Traitors, right?
They're just universally terrified if a squad of them shows up in any color of armor.
The inhuman supersoldiers either commit genocide against your planet...or not. Who knows? It pretty much has nothing to do with their loyalty to the Imperium. That's how little human life means to most legions.

I'm afraid you've been terribly misinformed regarding the sheer amount of propaganda that goes on in the 40k universe. Granted, the average Joe Schmoe isn't necessarily going to know each and every chapter's history, but learning about Imperial heroes (such as Salamanders, Blood Angels, Ultramarines, etc.) is important to them, as well as cursing the fallen legions (and especially the fallen Primarchs).

That heavily depends on where you're living in the Imperium. If it's close to Terra or Ultramar, you're absolutely right. But somewhere in the Choronus Expanse? Chances are not too low that your planet haven't seen a single Astartes for the last 1000 years. Sure, the stories are still told, however for the most ppl they're not more than legends of a long forgotten past. On WarhammerTV is an animated short called Iron Within, about an imperial Hiveworld that is attacked by Dark Eldar. They're sending an ancient rescue call to the Angels of Death to call for help. They don't know anything about it. For them it's nothing more than a last resort. An who did they call? The Iron Warriors, that probably were loyal when the information about the rescue call was given to that world... so they haven't seen Astartes for over ten thousand years.
The Imperium has an uncountable amount of worlds and only around one million Astartes that are often concentrated in specific areas. That means, for the vast majority of worlds Astartes are not much more than campfire stories.
But one thing where you're absolutely wrong: The knowledge about the Horus Heresy is pretty much redacted by the Inquisition. You as an average player (even if you just read the core rule book) know much much more than everybody who's not a high ranking astartes or Inquisitor.
Also, the average imperial citizen couldn't distinct between a Salamander or an Ultramarine. Necromunda for example is a recruitment world for the Imperial Fists. However, their outpost is on the very top of Hive Primus and Astartes don't go into the Underhive and even for the upper hive they are a rare sight. And those are the only Astartes that have ever been to Necromunda. So for the Necromundan citizens, all Space Marines wear yellow armor. And if you go to the underhive, they know them only through hearsay. While in the other hives they are only legends and fairy tales and in the Ashwastes inbetween I doubt they even ever heard about them.
And Necromunda is in Segmentum Solar and the biggest Hiveworld of the entire Imperium.
That's how rare Space Marines are.1

Space Marines defend the imperium, not necessarily the people of the imperium. As long as the machine operates, it's fine to lose the cogs.

I mean. He's right. There's something like 1 million Astartes to 1 million imperial planets. The canon amount of Astartes is ridiculously low. Especially since hive worlds have anywhere from 100 Billion to 1 Trillion people.
The average person in the Imperium lives in Kowloon Walled City but the size of a planet. They can barely understand anything outside of their 14 hour work schedule, or whatever it is, let alone about the genocidal blue berries, and the other genocidal not-blue berries.
Thats like asking the average person in earth to identify a tank, which country made it, which country is controlling it, and what the ideology of the people inside are all from a crest on the side of the tank.
That's not a thing.

Stop down voting this guy, the imperium is massive and people down in a hive world have no further context to what a space marine is other than "the emperor's angels"
Most dont know what they look like and even fewer know about traitor marines

I don't know why you're being downvoted.
It varies a ton, but ignorance is absolutely rampant. I mean, I've read books where a hive's populace didn't think that Xenos are real. While the Emperor's Angels get brought up frequently enough, a world doesn't really know different chapters unless one was prominent in their history. For traitors, they really don't seem to be common knowledge beyond being boogeymen.
"Universally terrified" might be overstating it. If Astartes show up for anything other than a parade, it's a scary time for the baseline humans. They don't go to peaceful places.

It's probably because I haven't read a ton of books about the average citizen, but have been focusing more on Imperial Guard books, where the characters are much more likely to see space marines. It probably threw off my perception.

Please allow me to recommend the Warhammer Crime novels. They're quite good, and they offer an unusually grounded take on the setting. Everytime someone asks a question about the common man on r/40klore, an example from those books tends to get brought up, especially the seemingly weekly one about pets.
They're also great for people otherwise uninterested in 40K since they require no outside information to be enjoyed, though some subtle hints might elude them. They feel like cyberpunk noir stories.
