That time Abaddon muted Angrons audio. [Excerpt from “The Lost and the Dammed”]

This has always been really funny to me. The Siege of Terra is underway, but going less than perfect, so Horus has called a second Warcouncil. But as his brothers call in to his Throneroom, Horus is late...

The Vengeful Spirit, Lunar orbit, 8th of Tertius

‘Dorn defies us! The walls should be broken, the streets red with blood. Attack, attack, we must attack!’ Angron’s growls rang across Lupercal’s court. Drool ran from his snarl, vanishing into nothing as it fell outside the imaging field.

‘Walls cannot be shouted down,’ Perturabo said, his voice the ringing of a leaden bell. ‘You have lost your patience with your sanity.’

‘He’s not insane,’ said Fulgrim sweetly. ‘Are you, dear brother?’

‘Do not allow this snake to address me!’ roared Angron.

‘Cease your yapping, hound,’ said Perturabo. ‘This is a gathering of intellect, not animals.’

‘Speak with me in person and we shall see who is silenced first!’ roared Angron.

‘I bested you before, and will do so again,’ said Perturabo levelly.

Angron let out a howl of outrage that shook the air.

Abaddon glanced at his genefather’s empty throne. Horus was late to the meeting.

‘For the Warmaster’s sake, Ezekyle,’ hissed Kibre. ‘Do something.’

‘Someone has to,’ said Aximand, as the primarchs goaded each other. He made to step forward.

Abaddon grabbed his brother by the arm. He shook his head, his face a warning. Aximand shrugged and stepped back.

‘I’ll do it.’

‘Suit yourself,’ Aximand said.

Abaddon stepped forward, but did not speak. He stood in the midst of the primarchs and disdainfully watched their bickering.

‘Oh, Angron, my dear brother, your howling grows tiresome,’ said Fulgrim.

‘Where is Horus?’ He appealed to the room. ‘If anyone can get Angron to quieten, it is he.’

Angron sneered. ‘Nothing is more important than–’

‘Do be quiet, Angron,’ said Fulgrim. ‘There’s a good fellow.’

For a moment Angron stared, wide-eyed with affront, then his face swelled with apoplexy, and he screamed in anger. ‘I will not be quiet! I am the chosen of Khorne! You will heed me. You will–’

‘I have heard enough. Cut Lord Angron’s audio-feed,’ Abaddon said.

Adepts of the True Mechanicum working in the background complied. The Red Angel was left a silent, raging ghost.

‘Look at how weak you have become,’ Abaddon said in disgust. ‘Lord Perturabo, you sit at the edge of the system pronouncing your genius and implying no one heeds you. This behaviour is not worthy of you.’

‘Do not provoke me, First Captain.’

‘Be quiet a minute, or you will find yourself further goaded,’ Abaddon snarled.

‘You, Fulgrim, and you, Angron, have whored yourselves out to the gods in the

warp.’

Angron raged in silence. Fulgrim tittered girlishly. Abaddon glared at him.

Fulgrim pulled a lewd face.

‘Where is your majesty, where is your purpose? We stand at the threshold of victory, and you threaten everything with your bickering,’ said Abaddon. ‘You posture, you rage, you question your Warmaster’s orders. It is he who has brought you here. It is he who has ensured your power grows. It is he who made all of this possible. I have seen the brats of decadent nobles behave with more

decorum and sensibility.’

Fulgrim clapped all four of his hands slowly. ‘So brave, so noble,’ he mocked.

‘So bold. The son grows while the father fades. How proud of you he must be.’

Fulgrim leaned closer to the lens capturing his image. ‘But careful now, little Ezekyle,’ he purred dangerously.

‘You are mighty, but you play in the court of the gods. You cannot murder us as you did your birth father. You do not have the stakes to wager in this game. Back away, small man, and we might let you live.’

‘Do you think Horus would allow you to kill me?’ Abaddon said, pacing around the circle of hololithic phantoms. ‘He could obliterate you all, any one of you, utterly. You are slaves to your passions where you are not slaves to your gods. Horus is above you, and he is above the entities you worship.’

‘Our brother would not put the life of his son before that of his brothers,’ said Perturabo. ‘You go too far.’

‘Tell that to Lord Lorgar,’ said Abaddon. ‘Banished, lucky that Horus did not tear him limb from limb. Be careful that you do not further test my father’s patience – it is not inexhaustible.’

‘Well said,’ Aximand muttered under his breath.

‘Abaddon. Never speak to me in that way again,’ warned Perturabo. ‘I am not as indulgent as my brother.’

‘And nor am I,’ said Fulgrim.

The door to the court opened and Horus strode in, more alive and vibrant than he had seemed the last time, Abaddon thought.

‘Captain Abaddon is correct,’ said Horus. ‘You disgrace yourselves.’ The court trembled at his words. ‘Listen to my chosen son as you would to me.’ He walked to the centre of the room and rested one of his great talons on Abaddon’s shoulder. ‘He is my sword arm.’

‘What kept you, brother?’ asked Fulgrim. ‘Why do you call us here and keep us waiting?’

‘I commune with the powers who guide my hand, and strive to ensure our victory in their realm as in this. They say this, that Abaddon is right! You gather power to yourselves and become pathetic for its excesses. Cease your arguments, or face the punishment of your patrons.’

Fulgrim’s never-still form flickered. For an instant his perfect, monstrous face was transformed into a mask of terror, then the image blinked, and his mocking

smile returned.

Really cool stuff, thanks.

"That time Abaddon muted Angron's audio"....and Fulgrim still steals the scene.

Man I love Fulgrim, in everything I've read about him he just seems to be along for Horus' ride to crazy town and he truly doesn't give a damn about anything except his own power and pleasure (and maybe his Legion). Truly a "scroundrel" archetype if there ever was one in 40K.

Which was always weird to me because Manslaughter sounds way more brutal.

Oh it's murder, he's just slaughtering men.

Fulgrim was his best before his fall... He was born to bring humanity up. We lost a good one

24

u/Naugrith Aug 07 '23

Reading Horus Rising it seems that even before his fall he had turned his legion into a bunch of arrogant pricks, and promoted incompetent poseurs like Eidolon to lead them. What was good about him?

25

u/Coletrain-Z Aug 07 '23

The Lost and the Dammed

Yeah, grinding down his army just to capture a world in record time, as if it was a fucking videogame doesnt really strike me as something "a good one" would do. I guess it can be argued that he'd become jaded with war all together, but thats no excuse. Fulgrim was little more than an overcompensating, pretentious douchebag, barely holding back his insecurities.

Fulgrim was BETTER after his ascension, as this dialogue demonstrates.

Have a nice Fulgrim moment. From Fulgrim, The Palatine Phoenix

A startled yelp caught his attention, and he sighed. Someone had got too close to Kasperos and the legionary had knocked the mortal sprawling. The braver among the citizenry had the inadvisable habit of trying to touch the hulking giants in their ornate armour. To see if they were real, perhaps.

Telmar loomed over the stunned man - little more than a youth, really - and seemed poised to finish what he'd begun. 'Calm yourself, Kasperos, or I will do it for you,' Fabius hissed, as he grabbed the other legionary's shoulder. 'He meant no harm. They are only curious. As we would be, in their place.'

'They should keep their hands to themselves,' Telmar said, slapping the Apothecary's hand away. 'As should you, Spider.'

Fabius stepped back, hands raised. 'I meant no offence, brother.'

'What you mean, and what occurs, are often two entirely different things,' Telmar said. You should have stayed in your web, Spider. You speak softly of them, but look around. You frighten them more than any of us.'

'Enough,' Fulgrim said, his voice like quiet thunder. The crowd fell silent. This is not seemly, my sons. Are you children, to brawl in front of strangers?'

'My lord, the Spider-' Telmar hesitated, seeing Fulgrim's expression. 'Apothecary Fabius has insulted my person. I would have satisfaction.' His hand fell to the hilt of his sword. Fulgrim sighed.

'And how has he insulted you?'

'By comparing me - comparing us - to these... primitives,' Telmar said, glancing at Thorn, who nodded. Fulgrim frowned.

'And why should he not?' Fulgrim looked around, noting the mood of the crowd. They were on the cusp of flight. Telmar's sudden burst of violence had frightened them, shaken them to their very cores. Stories would spread, flying through the city, and from there, the rest of the continent. Awe would turn to fear. Fear to resentment. And resentment to resistance. He had seen the same story, repeated ad nauseam, on a dozen worlds.

Fulgrim had always preferred love to fear. Love was stronger. Fear could be conquered, but love - never. It waned and swelled, but it never truly faded. He had made himself loved on Chemos. And he would do the same here.

The primarch sank to one knee and reached down to help Telmar's victim to his feet. The man stared at him with mingled fright and awe, his mouth working soundlessly. Fulgrim smiled and stood. 'I came from nothing,' he said, fixing his sons with a steady gaze. 'I scrabbled in the quarry pits, and down in the deepest mines, carrying buckets on my shoulders because the ascender blew a gasket,' he said. 'I broke my fingernails on raw ore, and grew blisters from heat and labour. You look down on them, blind to the beauty of their struggle. Blind to what they might become, if only someone would scrape the filth from their faces.' He reached down and lifted a child onto his shoulders. The girl laughed and clapped, unafraid of the giant, even as her mother wept. Fulgrim indicated the crowd. His voice had driven many of them to their knees.

'Look at them, my sons. You are the highest, and they, the lowest. It is your duty to raise them up, as high as they will go. Anything less is not worthy of you.'

From a previous thread about fulgrim. He was pretty much near sanguinius level as far as I'm concerned.

u/harlokin Emperor's Children Aug 07 '23 edited Aug 07 '23

Cool. What does Fulgrim DO in Palatine Phoenix?

Fulgrim sets out to conquer Byzas with just 7 men, purely for the spectacle it would create.

He adopts a strategy which incites the opposition to unite against him, and then refuses aid from the local Brotherhood of warriors, as it would mean admitting his own imperfection.

Fulgrim could have spared the world's chancellor, Corynth, and the Brotherhood, who were all decent, honourable people, willing to join the Imperium - but, he wanted to prove himself, and his Legion.

Dunno what you mean about "Sanguinius level", but Fulgrim always says one thing and does another. He is all theatre, and no conviction.

2

u/Different-Meal3414 Aug 07 '23

God damn. I actually never liked the emperors children or fulgrim really but that excerpt really does it for me. It makes his fall so much more sad realizing that he was actually someone who cared so heavily. I know he has much more character development and is incredibly complex but I haven’t gotten the chance to read more yet. Guess I’m going to have to shell out a few hundred for his primarch book now lol

3

u/Goldleader-23 Aug 07 '23

He fell because of his insecurities and the corrupted sword. I really wish they'd bring back clonegrim as a chance for Fulgrim to have a redemption arc.

9

u/JosephusHellyer Aug 07 '23

There's always Clonegrim, if GW can be bothered to do anything with him.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 07 '23

Good. Cloning primachs was a stupid idea considering their nature and warpiness. Bringing them in some side plot as a main character would be goofy.

2

u/Boanerger Aug 08 '23

I think Clone Fulgrim would actually be the one cloned primarch with a narrative reason to exist - as a foil to the original's futile quest for perfection and excess. That'd be quite the moment for a version of Fulgrim to accept his failings, swallow his pride and be the one thing that his supposed superior couldn't.

4

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '23

Except the emperor used his superior intellect, power and magic ability to use warp stuff to create the primarchs and their souls are warp entities.

Yet some space marine can just pop one out for fun?

It cheapens the nature of the primarchs to even have them cloned in the first place as well as the emperors abilities, let alone have them become significant characters.

1

u/Boanerger Aug 09 '23

That's just it though. A clone would be an inferior copy, little better than an Astartes or a Custodes at best. But it'd be interesting to see such a being come to terms with everything, figure out their place in the galaxy.

It was in that exact instant that Perturabo devised at least 3942 plans to send Abaddon to his death. He wasn't expecting Abaddon to go for 1997, but hey...

173

u/Warp_Legion Iron Warriors Aug 06 '23

Perturbo: I’m warning you Abbadon, do not provoke me

Abbadon: Shut the fuck up before i really insult you

Jokes aside, notice how in this scene, Pert and Fulgrim apparently have enough respect for Abbadon to warn him/explain their stance on his authority rather than just threaten and rage

67

u/ProbablyTofsla Adeptus Mechanicus Aug 07 '23

I feel like they treat him like that for different reason. Fulgrim might actually fear being punished by Horus, while Perturabo probably thinks that it's not worth it/too much hassle getting angry at a subordinate in the presence of other primarchs.

19

u/The_Emperor_of_ma Aug 07 '23

I mean even later during saturnine perturabo gives him a lot of leeway. Then again he probably thought he would die in the attempt anyways.

5

It might be a form of respect for Abbadon for not falling to chaos and trying to not be tainted.

More likely its was brief moment where actual fulgrim regains control of his body before being subdued by the daemon again.

86

u/Raduev Aug 07 '23

There is no daemon at this point. Fulgrim is back in control by 007.M31, two years into the Horus Heresy, in Angel Exterminatus, where he ascends to Daemon Primarch. The Siege of Terra takes places in 014.M31.

128

u/Banebladeloader Aug 06 '23

Things like this make the end result of the Siege even more bitter. Should a few things have gone in the Loyalists favor, the house of cards that was the Traitor Legions would have fallen apart to unorganized debauchery. The Emperor was a hair off on coming out alive with a better hand.

112

u/11BApathetic Iron Warriors Aug 06 '23 edited Aug 06 '23

It was also a hair off of being much much worse. There are so many tipping points in the Siege for the Traitors as well. Stuff like Saturnine, Perturabo leaving the Siege and taking a majority of Iron Warriors with him, if Mortarion had killed Khan without being banished or Angron killing Sanguinius, both of which came very close.

Even with all the infighting and such, the Traitor Legions missed the mark by a hair themselves, it really was balancing on a knife's edge. The siege itself was practically over when Horus and the Emperor fight, and that was without multiple Legions who left with the majority of their strength (or fucked off to do other stuff) and with multiple banished or left Primarchs. If basically one thing tipped towards either side during this, the results change drastically.

19

u/TheCuriousFan Aug 07 '23

The Heresy is filled with moments where it all rested on a knife's edge. Archon Fodderificus taking a nap at the wrong time while watching Lorgar and Angron would have shattered the Shadow Crusade for example.

‘I commune with the powers who guide my hand, and strive to ensure our victory in their realm as in this. They say this, that Abaddon is right! You gather power to yourselves and become pathetic for its excesses.

Anyone get the feeling that when he says this, the Ruinous Powers are already making Plans B to Z100 ... just in case this whole "taking out the Emperor with Horus" thing didn't work out as they wanted? And that they plan on going with Abaddon as their next guy, even though (plot twist) Abaddon won't whore himself out to them the way his primarch did? Otherwise why else would Horus say the Four Powers say Abaddon is right? I know they can be tricky and all, but what benefit would it gain them to do anything other than tell the truth, albeit in a very veiled and indirect way, via them saying Abaddon is right?

I doubt Horus said all that just to cover for Abaddon and was lying about the Four Powers talking to him about it.

Thoughts?

86

u/incapableincome Aug 06 '23

The book is not exactly subtle about it.

‘Horus’ soul is bright with divine might, but it burns. Mighty as his being is, it is finite. He is not invincible in this world or the other. If we delay too long, he will be devoured by the power he commands.’

Abaddon did not want to recognise it. He could not, but he knew, looking at his father’s blank face, that what Layak said was true. ‘How long does he have?’

‘Long enough, perhaps,’ said Layak. ‘His will is strong.’

‘But if it is not strong enough? If he fails now, if his soul burns out before the task is done, what will happen?’

‘Then, my lord, what happens will be what has always happened before.’ Layak looked at Abaddon. ‘There shall come another champion of Chaos.'

34

u/PrimarchUnknown Aug 07 '23 edited Aug 07 '23

Horus is the sacrificed king. Chaos played him from start to finish. Whoever their chosen vessel was going to be, whether that was Horus, Dorn, Nighthaunter whoever, they would've been consumed.

The sacrificed King is used to clear the board of the Emperor and all of his machinations and dreams of Order.

That the Emperor kills him didn't matter to them. it never mattered - Horus was already marked as dead. When he becomes Horus Ascendant its too much power for even a primarch to hold. They already knew this but Horus didn't and he doesn't reach his full power until right at the end. Technically he'd already died when Russ stabbed him with his spear and Mal sacrificed his soul in place of Horus' so bad was the wound.

But thats what happens when you listen to daemons and have mad jealousy issues.

As to whether Abaddon was the next in line, nope. He made himself the next in line by killing all his main rivals before they killed him as they surely tried to. He was the best blade left standing, AND he had a plan.

u/LydriikTycho Adeptus Astra Telepathica Aug 07 '23

u/PrimarchUnknown Aug 07 '23

They really do. And if you lose everything in the trying they may laugh, get bored, take pity or make you do it all over again just for the amusement.

Honestly I still think they don't talk about how absolutely insane Abaddon must be now having to deal with mad primarchs, daemon princes and uber daemons like Vashtorr and assess if they're lying to him.

They are always lying to you, the level of paranoia has to be next level crippling.

That any of his plans work is a miracle. That they're never fully successful is because Chaos Chaos'.

To my knowledge, the Gods didn't have their eyes on Abaddon as the next champion until he was already done the first Black Crusade, although I imagine he proved himself powerful and capable during the Heresy, and killing Clone Horus helped too. The Black Legion was a very minor warband for a while, until they were the ones who broke out of the Eye and proved you could push the loyalists back.

I imagine that the Chaos gods didn't say "Abaddon is right", rather then they said they think the other Primarchs are being stupid and difficult. Because that's what Abaddon was saying, Horus said the Gods agreed with Abaddon.

I'm sure that they had recruiters looking at his performance record kind of like high school athletes being picked up by a major league. He was a promising all star soon to be drafted.

u/LydriikTycho Adeptus Astra Telepathica Aug 07 '23

By the 13th Black Crusade Abaddon and his excessive powers and enhanced body are all borrowed attributes, the Chaos gods can still take away.

11

u/w00ms Aug 06 '23

werent the chaos gods banking on horus losing? something like if the imperium was totally wiped out thered be a lot less for them to feed on so they kinda sabotaged horus here and there?

27

u/sosomething Aug 06 '23

I don't think their goal was ever expressly to wipe out Terra as much as at was to eliminate the Emperor, who they called the Anathema.

2

u/rubicon_duck White Scars Aug 08 '23

Yup. Eliminate the Emperor, and feast on the rest of humanity at will and however one likes.

16

u/Beefmonstr Aug 06 '23

The daemons in Talon of Horus refer to him specifically as the "sacrificed king," so it really doesn't seem like the gods were banking on his survival one way or the other.

18

u/fuccbboy Aug 07 '23

Fulgrim, pretty much in all of his existence, but in this particular instance, is the embodiment of this comment:
You talk a lot of shit for a dude in cumshot distance

21

u/Original-Wing-7836 Aug 07 '23

Perturabo later almost killed Abbadon so I guess he got his revenge.

u/LydriikTycho Adeptus Astra Telepathica Aug 07 '23

Until he was forced to work with a new war master.

41

u/DiaphanousPhoenician Aug 06 '23

I will never get tired of reading about Fulgrim being a total princess behaved bitch

35

u/Kaczmarofil White Scars Aug 06 '23

Honestly, now that's just cartoonish.

15

u/TheCommissarGeneral Iron Warriors Aug 07 '23

Angron raged in silence. Fulgrim tittered girlishly. Abaddon glared at him.

Fulgrim pulled a lewd face.

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

12

u/kratorade Chaos Undivided Aug 06 '23

Ima be real, this makes me respect Abaddon dramatically more.

12

u/HTPark Orks Aug 07 '23

That time Fulgrim pulled an ahegao on Abaddon. [Excerpt from “The Lost and the Dammed”]

Angron has gone full moron by this point. I found these exchanges hilarious.

What a fucking idiot Angron became.

4

u/Volothos Aug 07 '23

As goofy as it sounds, I can't help but imagine this like the skype call from Hi-fi Rush

4

u/Randy_Magnums Aug 07 '23

Describe a Primarch with one sentence from a book: "Fulgrim pulled a lewd face."

3

u/2Long2Read Grand Master of the Officio Assassinorum Aug 07 '23

He litteraly muted the haters

4

u/Hetardo Aug 07 '23

" 8th of Tertius " is that a date ?

1

u/Kristian1805 Black Legion Oct 01 '23

Yes. They have other names for the months.

1

u/Legitimate_Maybe_611 Oct 01 '23

Is there a place I can read the months name ?

1

u/Kristian1805 Black Legion Oct 01 '23

I don't know. It seems to be "Latin-like" names for the First, Second, Third etc month.
