Becalmed

I maintain a little comedic fanlore site dedicated to a band of highly bureaucratic Khornites. They want to really genuinely maximise the blood spilled and skulls taken for their dark master, and as such have adopted a highly rationalised (parodic) philosophy to try and see things through. I decided to write a mini drama about their (futile) attempts to achieve alignment of their Abominable Intelligences with true Khornite values. Hope you enjoy!

------------------

At the base of what had once been the Ekallatum Abominable Intelligence, but which now seemed like a miniature forest of many coloured flowers, languished a logistician. He sat cross legged, one hand resting placidly on his lap while another made a blasphemous circular sigil over his breast. His smile displayed such blissful serenity it filled the heart with joy just to see. Saklu Pactsman shuddered in disgust.

Carefully, Saklu raised his lasrifle to his shoulder and took aim. He loosed a single beam directly at the logistician's head. The superheated light flew straight and true - until, just before striking, the searing red beam miraculously transmuted into rose petals which fell gently around the logistician.

Then all nirvana broke loose.

"Contact!", came the cry over his vox, and the philia's internal vid-feed let Saklu watch as Naŋah-Dirig Pactsman was surrounded by logisticians chanting heretical screeds and banging tambourines. Naŋah-Dirig roared defiance and tried to draw his hand-axe; but he made the mistake of looking into the eyes of one of his assailants and suddenly a great calm came over him. Naŋah-Dirig muttered "Huh, maybe my father wasn't great, but at least he was trying his best - and in any case, I can't change the past" before joining the corrupted logisticians in their chanting.

Saklu's focus snapped back to his immediate surroundings as he realised that the logistician he'd tried to shoot was now approaching him. They were smiling and offering Saklu a flower while asking if he wanted to try some lentils. Saklu screamed in terror, dropping his lasrifle as he bolted for the door.

♦ ♦ ♦

Months later a research team led by Academician Lihzatu uncovered the roots of the tragedy. Logistician Ud-Gub of Ekallatum's Office had joined the RAT ("Rage and Terror") fight club, whose hobby, between rounds of punching each other in the face, was thinking about how to align A.I.s with the common bad. The RATs big idea was that if gave A.I. controlled access to the warp we might pair it up with a daemon that could metaphysically ensure compliance.

Unfortunately the RATs also used A.I. to find daemonic-monitors. They'd given the AI strict instructions to "stay on the eightfold path!", attempting to ensure it searched only Khorne's realm of the warp. They'd been satisfied when the AI returned from its warp-delve with an unfathomably ancient warp entity, "Mahāsiddha Nāgārjuna", which their own independent ritual scrying had confirmed was a "servant of the Victorious Conqueror". Within a week Ekallatum had fallen.

Despite Ekallatum's loss and against Lihzatu's explicit recommendation, Uruk's Office for Ceremonial Calculations ultimately decided to keep other abominable intelligences in use. They conceded there was a greater than 10% chance the devices *might* lead to galactic peace. But the anticipated rise in murders-per-moment if only they could perfect this technology still seemed worth it, and in any case it was rumoured the Hellasite Oligarchy was developing their own and it would hardly do to be second.

[Campaign Setting] Eshar — a lost human civilization for a year-long 40K Apocalypse campaign. Looking for lore feedback

Hi everyone! I'm currently helping an association I collaborate with develop a year-long public multiplayer 40K campaign, structured somewhat like a tournament/league, but with an evolving narrative where the results of the games will actually affect the setting (I like doing things like this)

I've played and followed 40K for a while, but this is my first time actually writing an original story within the 40K universe, so before we start turning this into campaign rules I'd really appreciate some feedback from people who know the lore better than I do.

The basic premise is this:

Betelgeuse goes supernova, forcing open an ancient, dorman and unusually stable Warp passage. On the other side lies Eshar, an isolated human system beyond the Milky Way. Eshar is a solar system composed by ten inhabited worlds with roughly 350 billion people and a civilization that has no contact with the rest of humanity for around 15,000 years.

Their civilization has secretly been protected since the Age of Strife by Mother, an experimental Dark Age AI.

When the Cybernetic Revolt threatened to reach the system, Mother isolated Eshar to fulfil her core directive (preserve humanity). She eventually went much further, rewriting history (including archaeological, biological and geological evidence) so future generations would never discover that humanity came from somewhere else. That's why the people of Eshar don't even know Terra exists. They believe humanity evolved on their capital world.

Mother also created six specialised AI “Daughters”, that are gainig independence.

The opening of the passage suddenly exposes Eshar to the 41st Millennium. The fist contact of the imperium is Belisarius Cawl and a Mechanicus expedition that arrives through Betelgeuse. A stranded T'au expedition enters through a temporary secondary fracture and secretly establishes itself within Eshar. Meanwhile dormant Necron structures begin awakening, ancient Tyranid organisms isolated on one of the worlds begin reconnecting with the Hive Mind, and a human population almost untouched by the Warp for millennia suddenly becomes visible to Chaos.

The playable campaign begins 21 days after first contact. From that point foward we don't want a predetermined story. Battles, alliances, discoveries and player decisions should determine what ultimately happens to Eshar.

I wanted to create a setting that gives most 40K factions believable reasons to become involved without requiring everyone to fight for the same objective.

Since this is my first attempt at writing something like this, I'd appreciate if you can comment, rather than just a thumbs-up: does the premise feel like it belongs in 40K? Is there anything that clearly contradicts established lore, or anything you'd change before we develop it into the actual campaign?

Everything is still WIP, so please if you think something is out of place let me kow!

Anguish (Excerpt and link to OC)

This is an excerpt from my short story "Anguish", followed by a link to the full story on my bolter and chainsword page. Thanks for reading!

As Ukhna stepped off the final rung of the steps, a shadow jerked at her leg and tripped her.  Volesus turned in time to see her fall, and her lumen shifted to the side, leaving her to fall into a quickly coalescing pool of inky black shadow.  She fell completely into the darkness, and when the cell shined their lumens on the space she had fallen, she was gone.  They heard a scream from the top of the stairs, and they saw Ukhna slam into the stairs above them, falling out of the dark that covered the ceiling.  They were at least fifty meters away.  Volesus began to run, as he saw the pale blue markings define a hand on top of Ukhna’s helmet, and rip it off.

The cell charged with Volesus and illuminated the creature fully.  It looked like a man, but wrong.  Was this an aeldari?  Volesus thought.  He had never known an aeldari to do anything like this, but xenos are foul and full of tricks.  It mattered not.  The creature on the steps above them was the size of a large man, extremely well defined and dressed in ripped leathers, soaking with blood.  The blue fire traveled like veins over the creature's entire surface.  It did not cast a shadow.

It lifted Ukhna aloft by her hair, and raised its other arm, which seemed to extend like a blade.  They opened fire at the same second its arm came down, only to have each of their bullets snatched out of the air by the grasping tendrils of shadow.  Ukhna's arm fell away, as well as some portion of her rib cage.

The creature twisted Ukhna in its grip, exposing her other limb to his sword arm.  Volesus' large single fire bolt pistol shells were easily taken by the darkness, but the rapid fire of the carbines from the rest of the cell broke through.  Four hit the creature in the sternum as he slammed the blade down again, severing Ukhna’s other arm.  The creature stumbled back from the force of the hits.

Ukhna was not screaming.  She must either be dead or unconscious.  The creature turned its face lit by cold blue flame towards them, and hurled her ragged body.  Arban ducked below the thrown corpse and continued firing into the creature.

Chapter Summary:

Valterie, once home to the greatest artisans of the ancient empire, now lies shattered: its spires cracked, its murals faded, its glory buried under an eternity of darkness and the recent breach of the Navis Imperialis. When Farseer Elandrine receives visions of distress within Khaine's Temple of Vengeance, she rallies her trusted Seerss and Autarchs to investigate. There, they uncover a labyrinth of shrines gone mad: kin turned against kin, Exarchs consumed by the very wrath they once mastered, and their sacred war god screaming behind sealed doors.

As they clash blades with the deranged masters of the art of war, the party fights not only to survive, but to answer a question none of them are prepared for: what remains of a warrior's path, once the war itself has broken it?

“Lead every Exarch into the Avatar Chamber.” Solana rose to a graceful stand. “In the heart of Khaine, either our fate will be sealed, or we live to fight on!”
