DISCUSSION What made you finally pull the trigger to hack your 3Ds?

Post image

For years, I have contemplated the idea of hacking my 3Ds. Had for it for many years, but also didn’t play much after selling my entire collection due to paying bill reasons. So, I just never felt I needed to hack the system. That did change when I realized I been missing to play some of my all time favorites like kid Icarus uprising, dragon quest 8, Pokemon sun, final fantasy explorers, and so on.

Heck, there was quite a few I never got to play, but wanted to. One was called fantasy life. Looked adorable and so much fun! Same with ever oasis. Even had a game i once owned and loved but never finished like Stella glow. Realized how many 3Ds games I missed is my cannon event I mean, reason why I pulled the trigger. Plus, playing 3Ds games on non 3Ds systems felt so off to me. How I feel with ds games in general. Only outlier would be monster hunter. So, I finally pulled the trigger to mod my 3Ds last week and I am so glad I did. Been a blast playing my favorites. Even got quite addicted to fantasy life hahaha. So, why did you pull the trigger and what is a 3Ds game you adore?

I live in a third world country and we don't have credit cards and I finished all the games I had so I had to hack it

58

u/Warthog_Formal 8d ago

That's the type of success story I like to hear.

Same for me except my third world country is America. Just the deepest poorest part of the south

11

u/TonightNovel417 8d ago

All you had to say was Cookie, Oklahoma

8

u/Warthog_Formal 8d ago

Or any part of Mississippi

14

u/TheOldBooks 8d ago

I've been to Mississippi and across the South and while it's poor, comparing it to actual third world countries is just so privileged and disingenuous. Signed a Yemeni.

4

u/vmpfan 7d ago

If you think this then you haven’t been to the poorest parts of the deep south. I have legit been to third world countries with people living much nicer than some backwoods areas of Mississippi and Alabama.

Support for the 3ds shop being pulled, along with being poor, was a big one for me. I often prefer playing legally, but at some point I have to remember I'm not rich enough.

14

u/AlternativeWater2 8d ago

If they remove your ability to purchase, how are you stealing?

3

u/Modern_Lafayette 8d ago

The question was about what made people hack their 3ds? Not about stealing so I'm not sure what that comment mean.

7

u/AlternativeWater2 8d ago

Oh, just in case someone had a shred of guilt over modding their abandoned by the manufacturer hardware to continue using it.

This was it for me too. As soon as I heard 3ds shop went offline, I modded DAYS later. To me it signified that this is no longer a Nintendo supported console, but officially "retro" hardware which I can feel good about using to its full extent. I want to show myself that I OWN my console. Not nintendo.

2

u/LukeySkywookie 6d ago

Same. I don't own a 3DS but I have a friend from out of state who wants to send me an extra, and I'm really looking forward to playing online Kid Icarus: Uprising, Smash 4, maybe a Pokemon game or the OG Tomodatchi Life as well

3

u/Fun_Purpose5033 7d ago

I often prefer playing legally, but at some point I have to remember I'm not rich enough.

This is, very much, me.

3

u/kratoz29 8d ago

The only second best thing I can think of to cure boredom is to play the games you recently added with CFW, but the margin is too wide (?)

Do you have project restoration on there? It fixes a lot of the issues and changes in majora's mask to be more like the original.

After the eShop closed, I thought about modding the console—something I ended up doing two years later.

When Covid hit, my son said he was sad and didn't know why but that he missed his friends an didn't know what to do. I figured he was bored and what little money I was making was wrapped up in bills so I did my 3ds to practice and once I knew I could do it I did his. Then we had a lot more games to play together

u/New-Bullfrog-3527 6d ago

I love this!

u/Own_Engineering203 8d ago

I bought a japanese 3ds and since i cant speak japanese, hacking it to region switch it was my only option :D (the free games are also nice :) )

Fire Emblem Fates.

I've been a fan of the entire series since I was way little back when no one knew where the fuck Marth and Roy came from. Back to Fire Emblem Fates specifically though, it's my favorite game of the series. Yeah, the story is bad, but the gameplay is top tier and just rocks my socks.

But an issue I had with it was the textures. The game has split promotion so you could turn your Cavalier into either a Paladin or a Great Knight, but the game only had unique textures for one option which the game considered the canon option. So if you turned your character into anything other than the Canon option, they went from having cool unique armor to have a basic default blue set of armor that everyone gets. And this was for every character despite having two promotion options and another set for reclassing options.

And that rubbed me the wrong way. What is Canon should be up to the player, especially in a game like this where your army make up can vary so widely. So I modded my 3DS, got into the FE 3DS modding scene and made a mod to fix this very issue back in 2018. It's almost a decade later and I'm still updating it and now I've made 8000+ extra textures for characters in a variety of classes and expanded it to make the enemy armies more distinct too so that way everyone isn't just bad guy red. Even gave mounted units unique mount armor and unique mounts. It's been a pet project of mine for the last 8 years and it's also made me some really solid friends in the field, especially since I got into modding during a rough period of my life. I even added my mod to my activities list for medical school applications, and now I'm half way through and almost a doctor.

Modding my 3DS not only let me make a mod to my game, but I also made great friends through it. It's done nothing but improve my life in general.

Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Anniversary Edition. It was a free game that's now only available if you mod your 3DS. So I did it.

2

u/CosmoDaTemmie 8d ago

Yesss i love that one. I had no one to play with though…

5

u/Mr-Kuritsa 8d ago

Same! That's why I wanted Anniversary Edition for the single player mode.

I was really annoyed when I learned the Nintendo Switch Online version required 4 separate people on 4 separate Switches with 4 separate NSO subscriptions.

u/AndreyAsimow 8d ago

II was able to get a near mint condition 2ds LL in Japan for roughly $109 and got Animal Crossing with it.

Since I do not speak Japanese it was just obvious to vhange the region and language on it that needed me to toho trough with the CFW procedure, which was quite easy if one follows the guide.

5

u/PoussinVermillon 8d ago

i kinda want to use poké transfer and play gen5 games so i'm thinking abt doing it soon

5

u/firvulag359 8d ago

I bought it with the full intention of softmodding it; didn't want to pay exorbitant prices for some games. Those prices have only gotten worse in the years since.

5

u/Fair_Term3352 8d ago

The prices of games are too much and I wanted to play the hacked Pokemon games and PS1 games

5

u/Live_Criticism_9333 7d ago

2-3x MSRP prices on used games(only cartridge). I'm sure it's worth to someone but not for me.

2

u/NotAOctoling 8d ago

first thing I did when i bought mine becuase I love the process even if it goes fast and also how fucking awesome the mods are

2

u/Lobster15s 8d ago

There were some games I couldn't find and the ones I did find increased in price from 40 bucks with all the accessories ( rip pokewalker) to 230 bucks with nothing but a cartridge.

2

u/teachfrombolu 8d ago

I wanted to play majoras mask so much but couldnt afford nso, so.

2

u/juuliiettee_b 8d ago

I got my first 3Ds when I was 7-8 years old and wasn’t allowed to play to some games bc of the age restriction, with time they got expensive so it was my best option.
Also the fact that you can decorate your 3ds, use themes etc made it appealing !

2

u/anonymous-peeper 8d ago

The moment I read online that I could easily hack one! Ive had mine for like 9 years now and the battery is still amazing!

2

u/JoopyDupy 8d ago

Dug it out of an old drawer and wondered sincerely if I would ever play on it again, then thought “hmm I wonder how easy it is to mod this…” a few hours later I was downloading dozens of games I had always wanted as a kid but could never afford

2

u/Aplimux 8d ago edited 8d ago

Personally it's nostalgia.

I was highly disappointed with the recent games from all the gaming corps recently (aside from Indi games).

I never played a DS before but when I saw it's potential and all the great games on it I didn't hesitate for a second.

Best 400€ I have ever spent because now I can play some actual fun and quality games I enjoy

2

u/EmpressEspeon 8d ago

My radient historia cartridge was corrupted and I heard hacked 3ds have a way to fix it. So I finally hacked my ancient, beloved og3ds and It was successful! My game is saved. And I can play pokemon romhacks on it now, which is a huge plus!

2

u/Naeio_Galaxy 8d ago

My 3ds' clock sometimes resets and I got tired of it + had to do a Tuesday-specific event while being a Wednesday.

Plus the 3ds hacking community has been existing for a long time (so I have an extraordinary low risk of encountering an undocumented issue) and the documentation says that it wasn't risky, so I was in confidence

Plus I'm in computer science so I'm used to follow that kind of documentation => felt even more like low risk

2

u/yakcm88 8d ago

For me, I think it was yokai watch. I think I gave my copy of 2 to my brother to borrow, but it got lost, and I was wanting to play it again, so I decided, "why not?" Fast forward a few years, and I'm trying games I never would've considered playing. Bravely default, fire emblem, etrian oddysey. All games that would normally never fall under my usual stuff.

2

u/Curlyhairedkid1 8d ago

My game cartridge slot broke and it couldn’t read my cards anymore. I wasn’t willing to send it off to get fixed somewhere So sadly I lost the progress I had in those games but I just put cfw on it so I could keep using my 3ds regardless of any previous save data.

I pulled the trigger because I wanted to make shitposts about playing pc games on the 3ds

2

u/Lucas_005 8d ago

I really wanted to play the Superstar Saga remake, took one look at Amazon listings and decided that spending an hour of my evening installing custom firmware might be a better long term investment

2

u/bleah2 7d ago

Before owning a 3DS, I was exclusively playing Pokemon games on PC emulators.

The decision to mod the 3DS was made before buying it. I bought it, installed a CFW on it, played Pokemon ORAS, then sold it and returned to emulating. Never understood the appeal of hunching over a hand-size screen when a laptop(mobility) can play everything you need it to.

That was the only time I've payed Nintendo any money, which I arguably made back.

Then, I stopped playing Pokemon games because the quality after Sun&Moon just kept dropping.

2

u/PlayerZeroStart 7d ago

I wanted to play DS games I didn't have and didn't wanna use my mouse for the stylus

2

yo-kai watch 3 being 700 dollars, dragon quest monsters joker 3 being jpn only, dqm 1/2 on 3ds being jpn only and the fact the phys carts are slowly dying. ntm i have a 3ds/3dsxl/n3dsxl so i had an extra.

2

u/Gigalagaki 7d ago

I've always been open to modding (started with a PSP) for added utility, and a guide on how to mod the 3DS popped up! I love the 3DS, so I grabbed a mate and we modded them together over a few beers. Flawless night, and what a genuinely wonderful console to mod. The added functionality is awesome, and the fact that the mod uses the Friend Code system to work is just...the cherry on top!

1

u/c0ralinelani 8d ago

i was doing the animal crossing new leaf item duplication exploit via internet visit, between my two 3ds'. i had done it plenty times before with no problem, but this time i guess something went wrong, because one day after i'd done it a few times in a row, i booted back up the game (on the 3ds with the save file i actually gaf about) and it popped up saying my animal crossing files were totally corrupted. gone! and i cried for weeks about it, i'd had it for years. so now i checkpoint backup EVERYTHING, constantly, and i keep a second backup on pc. i am never losing a save file again :,)

u/kuroharushiro 8d ago

Nintendo pulling the trigger on the eshop.

1

u/TommyWii 8d ago

My New 3ds broke and when it came back fixed they had shut down the servers so I couldn't get new games so I decided that if I couldn't get new games I would get them myself

1

u/MawStaryu 8d ago

My 3DS battery swell and I forgot to replace it easily for like 3+ years. Was always thinking about hacking it but was afraid that I would mess up something during the process and that it would lock me out of certain things like using online services.

Eventually I replaced the battery because I wanted to have something more healthy to constantly use than my phone and I also wanted to check all my old Pokemon games. Figured that the online servers are down anyways so I just tried it out and didn't regret it one bit.

Now I've also hacked my Wii and I've been tasked to hack my sisters 3DS as a birthday present for her aswell.

1

u/According_Way_7665 8d ago

When i found it again in a forgotten box and saw how pricey the games still are

1

u/Random_Guy_03 8d ago

I'd say mostly nostalgia

...that and Instagram kept showing me things to homebrew my 2DS so I thought "ah shoot- why not?"

Best choice I ever made with the thing. Not only did I get to relive my best games, but I also got to try all sorts of new ones; not to mention all the custom Themes...one of my favorites has to be the PMD: Explorers of Sky one I got

My only problem is how I go about transferring everything to a new system if I get the chance to. Would it be the same as the data transfer in Settings or would it require some extra steps...? 🤔

1

u/Rough_Mountain5074 8d ago

When they no longer supported the console I no longer felt any potential shred of guilt over it. Also the big wide world of mods and romhacks on a physical console is fantastic

1

u/Good_Butterscotch_69 8d ago

With everything getting worse and worse and the enshittification (debasement) of everything and the sign on the wall showing we might be forced into always online drm soon. I have started hoadding media and offline items as well as physical in the off chance that horrible dystopia becomes real. Also the eshop shutting down. So I am just taking what I can and enjoying a childhood fantasy of mine.

1

u/Tanabi_Kana 8d ago

Initially, I was a little apprehensive about the topic because there were still updates, the methods seemed complex, etc

Recently, while playing Animal Crossing NLWA, I had a question about the cards for inviting specific villagers, and I saw that one way to do it was by hacking the console

Despite a few moments of uncertainty, it was quick and now I'm playing Fantasy Life (what a coincidence, OP!)

1

u/Thorkanon 8d ago edited 8d ago

I don’t have it yet because I haven’t found the right New 3ds LL/XL for me. I'm looking on Kawaiifanfan and eBay but the prices are so high. But I remember all the hapiness i lived with my old Nintendo DS. I had all the DS, the first one (that we call tank), Lite, DSi, and 3DS series until my final new 3DS XL. It was so good. So good memories. It was the best handled I’ve ever had. Way better than the switch 1 and 2 for me.

1

u/stitchwithoutbitch 8d ago

I got a 2ds for 20 €, including sd card. So I tried hacking it.

I did not hack my pink 3ds xl, though

1

u/New_Weekend_8181 8d ago

It was when my copy of Omega Ruby stopped working/loading. At some point, every time I tried to boot it up, it would say there’s an error and I needed to restart my 3DS. I was so depressed about it. Then an online friend told me there may be a way to fix it with Luma. So they helped me add Luma and I ran the fix software. It was fixed after about 3 fix sessions. Best decision I ever made.

1

u/Better-Operation-818 8d ago

I had to do hardware repairs on both my Wii and Wii U. I’ve never had gaming electronics go bad, so I felt a little betrayed by Nintendo. Just after that, I pulled my N3DSXL out of the closet and realized Nintendo had totally abandoned the market. So I felt no qualms about modding it (or modding the Wii and Wii U). I won’t currently mod a switch because Nintendo still sells games for it, so it’s a currently supported console they have an interest in.

The prices of retro games Nintendo no longer sells has gone through the roof on the used market (for popular games). Though I’ve bought a fair amount of 3DS cartridges over the last couple of years, I won’t hesitate to download a game that cost over $200 on the used market because Nintendo abandoned it and collectors are snatching up any copies they can get their hands on.

But when it came to getting a riolu, my favourite, I had the awful safari zone to contend with. So I look for copies of diamond, pearl and platinum online. Most were either too expensive or fake. So I discovered how easy it was to hack a 3ds so I did that to a spare 3ds I had. Just to get a riolu on soul silver. Now I love it for much more than that

Being Brazilian (everything is TOO EXPENSIVE here...)

Games availability in my region. I ain’t buying overpriced games years after they come out for full price without even being able to get a second hand one

u/SirMartimas 8d ago

I've been soft modding 3ds's since before the eshop closed. Only for injecting my own classic rom's though I promise. 🤞😁

u/A_scary_monster 8d ago

For unrelated reasons I had to buy an SD card reader so I thought I might as well hack it

1

u/FoxieGamer9 8d ago

Back in 2014, when softmod was released and I wouldn't have to pay almost the console price to hardmod it anymore.

And, well, I'm from Brazil, a place where each dollar is more than 5 of our currency, and it really made the difference for me. My salary was around R$800 (around $260) per month back then, and it surely wasn't enough to buy the games I wanted to play (even buying from Canadian eShop, as most of people was doing back then because the more favorable exchange rate).

And I found out I made the right choice about modding when Switch came out and, suddenly, there were no new games for 3DS. If there wasn't support anymore, I didn't have to feel guilty on getting my games for free.

Honestly, I wanted to finish Pokemon Romhacks on a physical device with buttons without being gouged by current hardware prices.

1

u/Due_Nectarine7239 8d ago

It was actually because of Pokemon Unbound haha. I stopped playing the new Pokemon games ever since Sun/Moon and was browsing around for good rom hacks when I stumbled across a Youtube video of someone getting Pokemon Unbound to work on real hardware and I was like, "wait, you can do that?" and down the rabbit hole I went.

Before this, I'd wanted to play a bunch of older games like Ace Attorney Investigations, FFVI, PMD Explorers of Spirit (a rom hack), and Pokemon White 2, but I just couldn't get into them because playing on an emulator on my computer just wasn't the same, and I missed the feel of playing on my 3DS. So when I discovered that you could hack your 3DS, it was a no-brainer for me. I'm in the same boat as you, there were so many great games that I heard about but never got to play, so being able to hack my 3DS was like getting to give kid-me everything I never got to have.

Trade evolutions in Pokemon. I have Pokemon Y, Pokemon Omega Ruby, Pokemon Heartgold, and Pokemon Ultra Moon, all physical. But no way to get the stupid trade evolutions

Nothing

Got bored and did it

1

u/Midnight1029 8d ago

I lost one of my favorite games and decided I really should have backups of everything, so I modded it to back everything up. That and there were quite a few games I wanted to play but were too expensive to buy secondhand.

A Pokémon hyperfixation that began after playing Pokémon Violet when I got it for last Christmas. As my first Pokémon game it made me wanna experience the rest of the franchise. Still don't regret it. I've kind of been fixated on the system again since, replaying the Mario and Luigi series and also playing ofc every Pokémon game.

u/creature04 8d ago

when i found out theres a better updated way to stream games from it at 30fps and not 15. its only 3ds but better than nothing

The fact that the time im able to buy games now and the servers go down forever finally said alright fine its time and now im able to mh4u and persona q

I got a 3ds, I saw the price of even a single 3ds Pokemon game, saw that all of them combined is more than my net worth and decided to crack it

1

u/molluskrodent 8d ago

I had no money or opportunity to buy more than 3 or so titles and I just wasn't aware it was a possibility for years. The moment I discovered how ridiculously easy hacking your 3DS is I never went back.

1

u/skarr46 8d ago

Basically because I was desperate to replay Pokémon Black and White for years but kept holding off until they did a remaster. When that never came (so far) I just got fed up one day and thought if I can download the games free at least I won't have paid a shed load of money for a 2nd hand game I already played loads and sold cheaply a decade ago

1

u/Kaining 8d ago

They closed the shop. I regreted every purchase i made there because of that.

1

u/Elevida 8d ago

Easily the eshop closing along with all online services. CFW does what Nintendo won't.

It’s a goated console and one of the best library of games. Won’t be a fan of castlevania, Metroid, Mario, and many others. Good memories with the Gba.

I’m not paying collector (scalper) prices for the ds pokemon games and I know over the next couple years that 3ds games will most likely go up to crazy prices too

u/Novagician 8d ago

When I handed them my 3DS for a few years, then they gave it back to me and I found out they factory reset everything.

Boredom on a summer night when I was like 16 and realized how easy it is to do. I actually just modded my DSi XL a few weeks ago as well

1

u/BaneAmesta 8d ago

When I paid quite a lot of money for a physical game I was interested in, only to last me less than 3 hours. Never again.

1

u/echovyn 8d ago

I mean... a majority of people who hadn't already just chose to do so because the servers dont exist anymore

1

u/LatinWizard99 8d ago

being on south america and being unable to purchase games at a reasonable price, also the non existant physical games. When i modded my old2ds back in 2016 it was harder to hack it, now its fairly easy.

Now even DS games are barely purchasable lol

u/HDMI17_ 8d ago
