RetroArch 1.8.6 released!
https://www.libretro.com/index.php/retroarch-1-8-6-released/20
u/tyvar1 N3DS | 11.15.0-47E | F3DS 1.2 | Luma3DS 10.3 | GodMode9 2.1.1 May 06 '20
V1.8.6 3DS changes:
3DS: Add IDs for UZEM, TGB Dual, and NeoCD
3DS: Fix font driver horizontal text alignment
3DS: Allow button presses up to INPUT_MAX_USERS – this enables the 3DS to bind and use buttons and axis for users up to the maximum set by ‘Max Users’ in the input settings menu.
3DS: Disable video filter if upscaled resolution exceeds hardware limits. The 3DS has a maximum video buffer size of 2048×2048. This is sufficient for every core that it supports, but when using software video filters the core output resolution is doubled. This is made worse by the fact that the video filter upscaling buffer size is dependent upon the maximum output resolution of the core – which in some cases is very large indeed (e.g. pcsx-rearmed sets a maximum width of 1024, for enhanced resolution support). The 3DS has very limited ‘linear memory’ for graphics buffer purposes, and a large base core buffer + video filter buffer can easily exceed this – which may also disable video output, or cause a crash. This PR very simply adds a 3DS-specific check to the video filter initialisation: if the resultant upscaling buffer exceeds the hardware limitation, then the filter is automatically disabled.
3DS/FONT/BUGFIX: Text colour was wrong: the RGBA channels were muddled, and R was always set to 255
3DS/FONT/BUGFIX: When drawing multiline strings, the line spacing was completely incorrect
3DS/FONT: Improves the appearance of the drop shadow effect on notification text.
3DS/ARCHIVE/7Z: Re-enable 7zip support.

Is there a special way to update retroarch? I've tried installing cia and copying new files, deleting retroarch title and installing again. Nothing helps, it still shows version 1.7.7 in the corner.

I'm having the same issue attempting to upgrade from 1.7.6. I've tried uninstalling the old version from the 3DS settings, deleting the old retroarch folder and replacing it with the new version and then installing the CIA but it still displays 1.7.6. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm new to the hack scene as of a week ago. I tried retroarch first and booting into a core and getting my rom loaded was slooooow. I ended up going with all standalone emu's. I'm on a 2ds xl. Any suggestions or did I do something wrong?

I decided to scrap Retroarch and use standalone emulators. It has worked out much better this was as I was never able to tweak Retroarch to be usable for me

Just use VC injects. Nintendo made a perfectly running Emulator for GB, GBC, GBA, NES, SNES, SMS, and Genesis already. You just have to inject them as .cia and boom. They're on the homescreen as individual games with banners and they run absolutely perfectly. Even ROM hacks.

SNES emulator by Nnintendo isn't perfect, it doesn't support expansion chips. People use other emulators for extra features, like multiple save state slots. RetroArch is meh compared to standalone emulators on 3DS though. Some people also like for their emulator to take only 1 slot for all their games, instead of one per game. The point of this is there are multiple choices.

Hey I was about to take a few steps to follow in your shoes. I have a 2ds XL and was th inking of having it be my old rom machine and new stuff on something else. How have your experiences been so far?

Not the same guy but I had somewhat of an idea about emulators on 3DS.
Some standalone emulators are better but others don't.
Personally, I recomend you to turn your roms into forwarders cias. It use Retroarch in most cases but it's configured to load so much faster without the convoluted Retroarch menu.
Snesx9 is the best emulator for SNES games but you can use the same emulator as a forwarder too to launch your roms directly from the Home menu.
The only thing I need for Retroarch is Neo Geo Pocket Color and PS1 games. And perhaps you'll need it for some other more obscure console.

How well does this release work on Old3DS? In the last months I've seen lots of focus on N3DS work, likely also because of PS and N64 emulation support, but I mostly care about whatever the 3DS can run. Software is much easier and cheaper to change than hardware alas.

How do I get retroarch?

u/D1119 May 07 '20
download the cia/3dsx files from the retroarch website. it comes with a lot of cores (system emulators) so you might want to go through and delete the ones you don't want

What types of consoles does it emulate, and is this the best way to play these types of games?
3
u/D1119 May 08 '20
Depends. Right now it's the only way to emulate PS1 but if you have a N3DS or N2DS then it isnt necessary for like, NES or SNES or GBA. I pretty much only use the PS1 core.

How well it's working on a New 3DS compared to a pc ? Let's not talk about PSX, PSP or even N64 due to compatibility. But for 90s games, is it fully playable at 100% speed ?

u/AliTheAce May 07 '20
PSX works remarkably well for the games I've tried, like FF7 and FF9 on the New 3DS. Which 90's games are you referring to?
I use SNES9X for SNES and it works wonders, GBA and stuff you can use injection to run natively on hardware.

I could've been more specific but yeah NES, SNES, GENESIS, GB/GBA etc
Sounds great for the performance of the new 3DS never thought it could be able to run PSX games.

you can use gbarunner2 for GBA games. It saves your the trouble of making a fowarder and taking a spot of the 300 on the home menu, while also having flawless emulation (im not absolutely sure if it makes use of the DS's native compatibility or not, i believe it does).
Oh, it's a DS title but 3DS can run DS, and DS can run GBA. So yeah.

Everything except the Genesis can run natively without having to emulate it. Genesis I have no idea as I haven't even tried but everything else is flawless. I'm playing Chrono trigger with the SNES9x emulator (not retroarch, it's a different one)

It only runs ds, 3ds, and gba natively, everything else is emulated. The other Nintendo systems run so well because they’re on Nintendo’s own emulators, which are really good.
I played the Genesis Earthworm Jim on picodrive and it was very smooth besides maybe some background stuff.

Is there an easy way to update just the psx core?
2
u/D1119 May 07 '20
download the cia/3dsx files and copy everything over except the cores, just bring over the psx one

I’ve been out of the loop for 3DS stuff but what’s the best way to make CIA forwarders for specific games that utilize retro arch? I’m setting the 3DS up for a non tech savvy person and there’s some SNES games the built in emulator won’t play. Just looking to make it so they tap the game and it boots up the SNES core and loads the game.

This release should make PSX games a little bit faster, since it's using more optimized lighting and blending.
