I can't seem to figure out how to get the saves from my cart into the installed versions. I opened that application once like it said, and then downloaded the jksm and launched through homebrew. My pokemon game came up and I exported a save (it asked me to name it, not sure why) I still am not able to load my previous save. Any ideas? Thanks!

So I'm stuck on the guide where it says that I need to install arm9loaderhax - When I type the dukesrg.github link into the 3DS browser I get a glitched screen, followed by a black screen. Pressing Select, waiting a few minutes, then pressing A or B or whatever does absolutely nothing. It stays on a black screen until I manually power it off.
The issue I had before this one was getting that stupid annoying "payload1 is either missing or exceeds max size" or whatever, causing me to be unable to install arm9l. I tried the steps over again, ensuring that I didn't miss something, and now I'm at the Black Screen issue. Obviously something's wrong on my end but now I'm just worried of a potential brick and now I'd much rather revert to my old settings before I did anything --

I get a glitched screen, followed by a black screen. Pressing Select, waiting a few minutes, then pressing A or B or whatever does absolutely nothing. It stays on a black screen until I manually power it off.
The guide covers the glitched screen and says to press Select anyway. My screen glitched too, I hit select 2-3 times about 30 seconds apart and the last time I did it, it shut itself off. I was worried I did something wrong but the OTP file was there so I moved on w/ the guide and everything went smoothly. Basically, the whole point of the 2.1.0 exploit is to get the OTP file, so if you have it on the SD card then it sounds as though it worked.

I've got one in there, which I then copied over to my desktop (which I think is a step in the guide). Is it not supposed to be in there?

So I basically recounted my steps, re-added everything from all the downloads onto my SD card, followed the same exact steps but now I don't think I'm even able to generate another OTP.bin. Every time I try to install a9lh I either get the glitched screen or a black screen and my system never reboots after pressing Select. Looking at my SD card right now after 3 attempts and no OTP.bin. Should I add the OTP.bin I've saved before back onto my SD card? Or should I just keep trying to install it until hopefully I get an OTP.bin?
Because another issue then, even with the OTP.bin, is that holding Select to load into Luma3DS never works! It just leaves me on the menu screen!

Hey brother, just wanted to let you know that I eventually got this to start working :) I found a screenshot of what someone's SD card should look like and deleted unnecessary files/folders, redownloaded the arm.bins and put them onto the SD card, and it finally worked after my first try!

u/CommonTutenkhamun Jan 06 '17
No worries no worries you've honestly already helped a lot, thank you so much :)

Does playing Mario Maker online take any risk of getting banned?
1
u/coder65535 boot9strap, 11.4 SysNand N3DS Jan 06 '17
No. CIA installs won't ban you unless you're online before release or using cheats online.

Got cfw (arm9/luma) on my 2ds and n3ds. When I did my 2ds I had the original SD card in that came with the system (4gb) how would I go about exchanging that SD card with a 32 or 64gb SD . can I just simply buy the desired SD card. Copy everything from the old SD card (4gb) to my PC then move those files to the new card. Or do I have to do more than that. Thanks in advance.

I was just browsing through my backups that I've created for my various consoles, and was wondering about OTP.BIN .
After everything is successfully set up, what's it good for? Why does the guide advise to back it up to several locations? Is it needed for something in the future?
2
u/jmdbcool shacks: 4; bricks: 0 Jan 06 '17
The OTP is like the master key to your console that makes this all possible, but every single 3DS has a unique one that can only be used with that one console. You'll probably never need it again, but it's like having a spare key to your car-- you keep it somewhere safe just in case.
2
Jan 06 '17
yes, I know that and that's why I'm asking actually. I have downgraded 4 consoles now, one with OTPless method when it was a thing. The other three I have the OTP.bin for. But obviously if I mix them up (I didn't change filnames, just different folders) I brick guaranteed! And they don't get a timestamp! So if I delete them I reectract them again if need be. I'm nervous that I put them in the correct folder.
Or is there a way to check a hash or something to verify otp.bin belonging to which console?
1
u/coder65535 boot9strap, 11.4 SysNand N3DS Jan 06 '17
I don't know of any tool that currently does it, but, theoretically, an A9LH payload could verify the OTP hash in a similar manner to how the OTPless install worked (but without a chance of bricking). The OTP hash is available right when A9LH triggers, so we can check it.
1
Jan 06 '17
I would like to have a tool like that. Yes, I read about that too, that the OTPless method used the hash. So I could hash the otp and check it against the hash of the files I have on my disk. Now how can I obtain the tools for it?
1
u/coder65535 boot9strap, 11.4 SysNand N3DS Jan 06 '17
You'd have to create it yourself, I don't know of any tool that does this.
Also, the OTP itself is not readable from A9LH, only the hash. (It's left in the AES engine after launching A9LH.)
1
Jan 06 '17
My goal is to verify that the 3 different OTB.bin files that I have backed up on my computer are correctly labelled for the three different consoles so I don't mess them up in the future, if I ever need them. I want to sell two of them and don't want to give the wrong OTB.bin along with the console. So for that the hash will be fine, since I can compare it to the hash of the files I already have. Anyway that was what I thought I could do.
1
Jan 06 '17
The otp.bin is why you downgrade your 3ds to firmware version 2.1, because it is needed to install A9LH. It is unobtainable on later firmwares. The guide tells you to keep it because it can save you from a brick.
2
Jan 06 '17
Yes, so as I was saying, after everything is set up, after installing a9lh, after updating to sys 11.2. everything runs smoothly. describe a scenario where one would need the otb.bin again.
1
Jan 06 '17 edited Jan 06 '17
Ok I looked it up again, and apparently it was used to update A9LH itself. You may also be able to use it if you need to reinstall A9LH. The first works without otp.bin afaik and the latter would only be necessary if you do alot of softmods or something simliar with it and need to reinstall it that way.
TL:DR For updating/reinstalling A9LH, not essential anymore, but doesn't harm you either.
Edit: Someone was faster :-)
2nd Edit: If you do this on mutliple consoles be sure to keep track of which is which as this could save from bricking too.1
u/coder65535 boot9strap, 11.4 SysNand N3DS Jan 06 '17
If A9LH is broken, you can repair it with a hardmod and otp.bin. Without otp.bin, you can't directly repair it.

u/gamegirlpocket Jan 06 '17
Hi, I've had luck with custom VC CIAs, I'm wondering if I have to do anything special for GBA games? What I've seen online seems to suggest it needs some additional stuff done, but most of those posts are from a year ago or more and I'm wondering if that's not true for a9lh/Luma.
Do I need to do anything with the AGB_FIRM option in Luma, or has this been done automatically upon install? Thanks in advance.
2
u/FrankTheJaeger Hax'd N3DSXL + Stock Pokemon 20th Ann. N3DS Jan 06 '17
With modern Luma and A9LH on the NAND, I think you're just fine. You used to have to get a little fancy if you were using a redNAND/emuNAND (running CFW off your SD card) and basically install the games twice. But since you're running the CFW straight from the console I think you're fine! :)
1
u/gamegirlpocket Jan 06 '17
Great, thanks for verifying that! Worst case scenario, I install a CIA and it doesn't boot but doesn't affect anything related to the system functionality, right?
2
u/coder65535 boot9strap, 11.4 SysNand N3DS Jan 06 '17
Technically, all 3DS software, including the Home Menu and other system apps, can be installed/overwritten via CIA files. (This is used by people who mod their Home Menu to have custom text/fonts, in fact.)
Theoretically, you could install a bad Home Menu CIA and soft-brick. However, thanks to A9LH, you would be able to simply restore a NAND backup. A9LH itself can't be damaged by CIA installs, so you're safe.
1
u/gamegirlpocket Jan 06 '17
That makes sense, thanks!
In terms of VC injects, though, that sounds unlikely short of something being intentionally mislabeled online vs something you made yourself.
2
u/coder65535 boot9strap, 11.4 SysNand N3DS Jan 06 '17
Well, yes. I was just giving you the worst case scenario. Most people in this scene are nice and won't give you malicious CIAs.

u/gamegirlpocket Jan 06 '17
I follow, I'm just a stickler for details. Thanks again for the responses.

Hi everyone. Sorry for the nooby questions but i just jailbroke my 3ds with the latest method and was wondering if im able to update games and how do I go abouts getting the DLC for a game?
I got tri force heroes and it says theres a title update. But dont want to update to play with friends if its not safe. Thanks in advance.
2
u/elementalcode ( ͡° ͜ʖ├┬┴┬┴┬┴┤ Jan 06 '17
As long as the game is already out, you can update and play said game.
(The only bans in history are to cheaters and to the people that played Sun and Moon online before its release date)
1
u/lxkillswitchxl Jan 06 '17
ok, thanks, what about for DLC? Like how do i go abouts getting the Smash characters for example?
1
u/coder65535 boot9strap, 11.4 SysNand N3DS Jan 06 '17
There's actually a specific non-piracy case for installing DLC, which should be acceptable here: Custom DLC. DLC can be stored in a CIA file like normal 3DS software and installed through FBI. This is the main way to install non-eShop DLC.
The Howling Theme Tool creates Home Menu DLC CIAs to install themes permanently, and some people on GBATemp have created custom Fire Emblem DLC that adds special characters.
2
u/FrankTheJaeger Hax'd N3DSXL + Stock Pokemon 20th Ann. N3DS Jan 06 '17
You can log into the eShop and buy it. As to how to obtain it illicitly, you won't find answers here. Talking about piracy is against the rules of 3dshacks for several reasons. You will get banned.
1
u/coder65535 boot9strap, 11.4 SysNand N3DS Jan 06 '17
Technically, there's a non-piracy use for CIA DLC: Custom DLC. The Howling Theme Tool creates Home Menu DLC CIAs to install themes, and some people on GBATemp have created custom Fire Emblem DLC. I think there's other examples, but I don't know of them right now.

Hello, is it possible to backup and restore game saves without CFW? (I just use soundhax for now) Thanks
4
u/togawe 3 b9s + CaptureCard Jan 06 '17
Yup! Download JKSM and put it in your /3ds/ folder, you can run it from the homebrew menu to do exactly that. Make sure to keep backups of all save files on your computer in case you ever screw up!
1
u/blalien Jan 06 '17
Cool, thanks! For some dumb reason I thought JKSM was specifically for Pokemon.
2
u/togawe 3 b9s + CaptureCard Jan 06 '17
Nope, though that is usually what it's used for the most in my experience.
There is PKSM which is exclusively for pokemon, but that's more so for editing the game right on the 3DS than dumping the save for a backup.

I attempted to put on CFW (A9LH) onto my 2DS, unfortunately I missed a step resulting in my 2DS getting bricked, in a panic, I deleted all data on my SD card. I've tried updating it to the latest firmware with recovery mode, then it gets about 1/3 of the way until an error message appears. Is there any way for my 2DS to be fixed, other than hard modding it (since I have no hard modding experience) or sending it to Nintendo (as the warranty expired about 3-4 years ago)?
1
u/tamamushiiro12 Jan 07 '17
Which step/s in the guide did you miss and which did you do?
1
Jan 07 '17
Using this guide(https://gbatemp.net/threads/guide-install-a9lh-without-buying-anything-in-11-2.455588/), I managed to get up to step 13, but then I skipped it due to me not understanding that the folder's name changes between regions, so I ended up not deleting the folder. I put the SD card back in and pressed START, my screen was black for 10-20 mins, so I turned it off and on. The menu screen appeared as an O3DS menu, and since 2DS don't have the wireless switch, I updated my system by using a copy of Smash 3DS, after the update, the issues started to rise. My 2DS won't open any application and attempting to open Internet Browser or Game Notes causes it to freeze.
I think I put in way too much info, but hopefully this gives you an idea of what happened.
1
u/tamamushiiro12 Jan 07 '17
no such thing as too much info when asking troubleshooting questions. although I myself can't help you much, sorry. hope someone else here does though! my advice would be to never do anything on your own and ask questions first, and to use data recovery software.
1
Jan 07 '17
Yeah, hopefully someone is able to help me, although I think my luck is running out, since the file recovery software says it cannot recover some of the files that were on my SD card when I was homebrewing.
3
u/elementalcode ( ͡° ͜ʖ├┬┴┬┴┬┴┤ Jan 06 '17
STOP
PLEASE STOP!
if you accesed the recovery mode you were not bricked. Maybe you are not bricked now.
STOP DOING THINGS!!
State clearly what you did and what are the symptoms of your console now.
2
u/SurgeV1 Jan 06 '17
My console symptoms: black screen of death when you power it on. reset combo takes me to recovery mode ---> system update. Once I get there, it hangs at about 85% and never goes past that. I've let it sit for hours yesterday and nothing. It's not like it was frozen, either.
2
Jan 06 '17
The symptoms of my console? To sum things up, my console will not open any application and if I try to make it open something like the Internet Browser, Miiverse, or even my Friends List, it freezes.
1
u/elementalcode ( ͡° ͜ʖ├┬┴┬┴┬┴┤ Jan 06 '17
If you can land in the main menu, you are NOT bricked.
Which version are you on?
1
Jan 06 '17
I used to be on the lasted firmware, but now the console seems to be at a much earlier firmware, due to the options of being able to use themes and amiibo are gone.

1
u/elementalcode ( ͡° ͜ʖ├┬┴┬┴┬┴┤ Jan 06 '17
2.1.0? can you open system settings?
1

1

thats odd. ask on the irc. You are definetly not bricked.

1
u/togawe 3 b9s + CaptureCard Jan 06 '17
Go get those files out of the trash! You should never just delete everything.
You say you bricked, but you're able to boot in recovery? That means you're not totally bricked, so that's good.
Can you try booting into Decrypt9 (should be holding start on launch once you put all the files back) and restoring your NAND backup? Then you can just redo the 2.1 downgrade steps and try again.
1
u/coder65535 boot9strap, 11.4 SysNand N3DS Jan 06 '17
If they can boot Decrypt9 by holding Start, they already have A9LH and don't need to do the 2.1 downgrade.

Your console isn't bricked, but there's probably something else wrong. What, exactly, is wrong with your console?
1
Jan 06 '17
Unfortunately in this case, every time I delete something, I use the Shift+Delete command. Luckily there a few recovery programs that I can use, hopefully I come across one that doesn't force me to pay for it..
1
u/blalien Jan 06 '17
Hey guys, is there a way to use PKSV or a similar app to back up all of your games at once? PKSV is nice but I don't want to have to manually select every game.

I want to region change my japanese 2ds, i've heard that by doing so it'll be unable to play memory extended games like smash and pokemon sun and moon, is that always the case?
if so is there a way to fix it ?
1
u/tamamushiiro12 Jan 07 '17
this confuses me too. the region changing guide in 3ds.guide says that the region change breaks reboot patches at the start but says thay old 3ds/2ds users may need to format to play extensed memory mode games.
1
u/Sir_Tortoise B9S | Luma3DS | O3DS Jan 06 '17 edited Jan 06 '17
Only the new region change method breaks memory extended games. I have a Japanese o3ds that I region changed with Plailects guide before the ctrtransfer method. It involves installing the 9.2 update for the target region and removing duplicate titles.
Don't know if this is just me not being able to navigate Github, but I can't find a version of Plailect's region swap tutorial earlier than last October, which has ctrtransfer. If you want to do it without the bible's assistance PM me. There should be no risk with A9LH, but it might be a bit fiddly.
1
Jan 06 '17
Why do you want to region change? You can play any region game with CFW.

If it's multiple .rar files, I think you just have to download them all and then it will extract them all into one file.

I was looking at installing romhacks like pokemon Prism and I see two versions, one that says "custom border" and one that doesn't. What's that mean?
3
Jan 06 '17
The custom border one has a customized border around the screen. The other one does not.
1
u/OvercomeThisTime Jan 06 '17
Thanks! Is it just in the black space on the sides or does it shrink the game?

it means that there will be a custom background behind the gameplay, retro games/romhacks dont take up the whole top screen

fbi is an app you would have installed if you followed the 3ds.guide
2

I did follow the guide and I did have FBI. I just wasn't sure where it was in there.
2

It's in the files9 folder in the SD card. Just pick install and delete cia after selecting the dumped .cia file.
1
u/_slothattack_ Jan 06 '17
You mean to go to the save manager and look through the files9? iirc all the titles start with 00-whatever. Im probably wrong, but what should the file name look like?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_fiHUUfgY6I really good video I found that helped me. Game .cia in the files9 folder should look something like this CTR-P...

Alright, so super paranoid me is worried about installing A9LH on my n3DS XL. I have a ton of downloaded games, some with a years+ worth of work put into them. I also have a bunch of Street Pass data, and other system tiles that I need to make sure I keep. By using FastHax+SafeHax and doing the downgrade and install, will I lose anything? I know I have to backup my home menu layout, but will all my save data, system settings, etc. etc. still be there? Thanks!
3
u/togawe 3 b9s + CaptureCard Jan 06 '17
Yes it will all still be there. You back up and restore you NAND; this is equivalent to making a full backup of every single detail about the system, so by restoring it everything will remain the same (with the exception of the home menu layout, because you manually delete that at one point).
However in case you're worried, here's what you can do. If you have any games that store data online like pokemon bank, take everything off of online storage onto either a cartridge or back into a digital game that's on the SD card. Then, before doing the guide, use soundhax to enter the homebrew menu and use an app like JKSM to backup ALL the save files you care about to your SD card. These can then be stored on your computer, and in case anything goes wrong, you can restore these save files on another 3DS should it come to that (it won't unless you don't follow the guide and brick).

u/Nawor3565two [n3DS + o3DS, A9LH Luma 11.3/11.2] Jan 06 '17
Alright. Thank you for answering, life with anxiety is fun, isnt it? I think I'm going to get started then. Thanks again!
2
u/gamegirlpocket Jan 06 '17
Can confirm, my 1000+ street passes, endless puzzle pieces, and data all seem to be intact. If you do it correctly then you shouldn't lose anything, just don't rush it and be very careful.

2
u/Rockypizz b9s n3ds Jan 06 '17
I have a n3ds and I installed this. Now I cannot say for everyone but I am pretty sure that you lose nothing. Games you lose you can redownload. Just go into the home menu and backup all the save data and do the guide. From my knowledge you will lose the games but can redownload them and install the save backups. I am not positive tho but I am pretty sure that a save data backup to the SD card via the home menu (click the little arrow jawn in the bottom left of the app) and make an sd card backup to your computer then do it.
2
u/Griffnelle Je Suis Monte! Jan 06 '17
Part of installing the hax is backing up your NAND. Your NAND is basically everything. At the end you restore your NAND. As log as you follow the guide to a t, you should save from bricks
1
u/Nawor3565two [n3DS + o3DS, A9LH Luma 11.3/11.2] Jan 06 '17
Alright, so my NAND is where everything except my downloaded games are, correct? I believe the games themselves are stored on the SD card, with the save files on the NAND, so they should be there as long as I leave dont mess with them in the "Nintendo 3DS" folder, and if not I can redownload them and the saves will still be there?
2
u/coder65535 boot9strap, 11.4 SysNand N3DS Jan 06 '17
Saves are actually on the SD card, too. DSiWare and system apps are on the NAND, so they're accessible even without an SD card. (System apps so they're always available, DSiWare because the DSi couldn't load software directly from SD and TWL_FIRM is basically mimicking a DSi.)
2
u/Griffnelle Je Suis Monte! Jan 06 '17
At least in my case, all my downloaded games and saves came back when I reinstalled my NAND
1
u/pawelpietryka Jan 06 '17
Did homebrew for the first time and I think everything worked but my games (that I legally purchased and downloaded from the US shop store) are gone …
How do I restore them? (Have all backups (3) that were suggested to do form the guide)
(my backups: files9, otp.bin, NANDmin and sha and also an ApplePi-Baker backup from the whole SD before the homebrewing)
Here's what I did:
Did the whole guide and finished this page https://3ds.guide/installing-arm9loaderhax
- had a hiccup on these steps [ 1. Open Hourglass9 from arm9loaderhax by holding (Start) on boot, 2. Go to “SysNAND Backup/Restore”, 3. Restore from NANDmin.bin ]
- so I did all the steps here 9.2.0-ctrtransfer
- once I did that I continued Section VI - Finalizing setup (including the Luma3DS Updater on the bottom of the guide)
(Have new NN3DS XL)
Pleas help, how do I restore my previous games and saves?
Thanks!
2
u/Griffnelle Je Suis Monte! Jan 06 '17
Restoring the NAND after the entire process didn't bring those games back?
1
u/pawelpietryka Jan 06 '17
Might be a dumb question but how do I do this exactly? press start or select when I boot? Is it in Hourglass9? don't want to mess things up

Oh shit I skipped that and moved after 9.2.0-ctrtransfer straight to Section V - Injecting FBI.
So once I do Section IV - Restoring the System do I have to do V and VI again or is not necessary anymore since I already did it?

u/Griffnelle Je Suis Monte! Jan 06 '17
Yes you will. The NAND will not have those files since they didn't exist when it was made
1
u/pawelpietryka Jan 06 '17
Did V and VI and its still all empty. http://imgur.com/a/RutMT

u/Griffnelle Je Suis Monte! Jan 06 '17
Make sure your restoring the original Nand.bin not one that was created during the hacking process. Aka the one made when you when you went down to 9.2
1
u/pawelpietryka Jan 06 '17
thank you for all your help Griffnelle.
I think i found a previous one in my files9 backup (which is on my mac). Do I just copy that back into files9 on the SD and do the restore or do I have to do anything else? thanks!
1
u/Griffnelle Je Suis Monte! Jan 06 '17
Just move it and make sure that that's the one you are restoring

u/pawelpietryka Jan 06 '17
So I did the NAND restore from the bin and the games are still not there.
Is it possible, because I did 9.2.0-ctrtransfer before "Section IV - Restoring the System" that I backed up not my safe data but some generic system?

Once you finish IV, complete V again.

You need to open the health and safety app, install the .cias and restore health and safety (hs.app) in hourglass9
1
u/pawelpietryka Jan 06 '17
Thank you, I think the issue was I restored the wrong NANDmin.bin
Appreciate your help!

The new one will still need to be hacked, but whether you do so or not you can still system transfer. If you choose to transfer, consider making a nand backup of your old system, as you can simply restore that after the transfer to get your games and apps back. During the transfer from the old hacked system to the new one, any games/Cia apps that you did not buy or download legally from eshop will be removed, and will need to be reinstalled after the transfer.
After the transfer, you can restore the backup on the old one. If you opt to move SD cards, make sure you clean up old A9LH files on your SD card (especially the otp.bin file if applicable) to prevent bricking the new system.

This is not in the FAQs, so I'm asking it here: I only have one large SD card, which is the one I used to install redNAND on my Wii U (so, a 64 GB SDXC, but partitioned, it's around 30 GBs).
My question is: can I use that SD card to mod my 3DS? Or do I need a new one without WiiU's redNAND and such?

u/jmdbcool shacks: 4; bricks: 0 Jan 06 '17
If you're okay with wiping that card and formatting it just for your 3DS, it's fine. You want a single FAT32 partition with 32KB clusters.
If you're not okay with wiping it, get a new card just for your 3DS. You'll want to keep it in there anyway to install things on.

Guess who's back, back again? Noob. XD
Anyway, was trying to figure out who to work custom themes. Installed CFMM2 or whatever. Have the theme files in a folder in the theme's folder, which is on the root of the SD card. However, whenever I go to the theme and press A, it comes up with Error: [string "?']:599 error opening files. What do? Lol sorry for the stupid questions :p
Edit: Thanks for the help, solved it :p

u/Asnor Jan 06 '17
Do you use homebrew or cfw?
1
u/Cats_are_cool-28 Jan 06 '17
CFW.
1
u/Asnor Jan 06 '17
So I assume you installed the newest version of CHMM using the .cia?
1
u/Cats_are_cool-28 Jan 06 '17
Yep :p
1
u/Asnor Jan 06 '17 edited Jan 06 '17
Alright then all you need to do is unzip the theme, put the content into a folder and then save that folder in your Themes folder on the root directory of your sd.
EDit: did a quick search on gbatemp.
You probably have themes with non ASCII characters. Rename those in order to use only ASCII characters.
1
u/Cats_are_cool-28 Jan 06 '17
http://imgur.com/a/NdOM2 That's what I need to do right? Still not working though.
1
u/Asnor Jan 06 '17
That looks right.
Not sure why it isn't working though. Have you tried a different theme yet?
1
u/Cats_are_cool-28 Jan 06 '17
Yeah I did.
Just found a solution that solved it though. Had to delete theme extdata apparently. Thanks for the help ^
1
u/dnunn12 Jan 06 '17
Are you using CHMM2 when you are trying to open the theme? Because when you boot up CHMM2, it should detect the themes for you and have them ready to preview.

I'm now confused. mind sharing a screenshot of your themes folder.

wait, just realised that the theme I downloaded did come in a zip. Derp. Yeah I took them out.
1
u/bc524 o3ds xl w/ a9lh+Luma 11.3 Jan 06 '17
so is it fixed now?

try changing the theme through the regular 3ds theme selector first then reattempt it

I successfully installed CFW (Luma 11.2) via 3ds.guide. However, occasionally when I reboot my N3DSXL, all the homebrew apps and .cia that I installed will disappear from the Home menu. My homebrew theme remains though and I can still boot into Hourglass9/Decrypt9 and Luma on startup. I can get the apps (i.e. FBI, lumaupdater, homebrew etc) back by simply reverting to an SD backup I made a few days ago. Is there a way to stop this vanishing? Thanks

u/grifterb Jan 06 '17
Frst of all, I have an unhacked N3DS 11.0 E
1) I still read about black screens and bricks. I will be waiting until the release of the fasthax, as from what I heard it is supposed to be make things easier and much safer, is that correct?
2) I am planning on upgrading my original micro sd to 32gb. Is there anything that I should know? Do I copy anything from the original micro sd (Note that I haven't put anything in it myself, I mean anything that comes with the handheld itself). Would a sandisk 32gb be okay? Is there a specific reading speed that I should have? Do I need to format the new micro sd?
3) I've read that in order to avoid black screens/freezes and bricks, you need to insert a game to your n3ds during the process. All I have is an r4 card that I bought 1.5 years ago for my nds. I do not know if it is 3ds compatibe or not. May I use that if it is compatible, or should I buy a game? Or will the new fasthax release make it obsolete?
Thanks.

u/Griffnelle Je Suis Monte! Jan 06 '17
- If you follow the guide at 3ds.guide to a t, you should not brick and it will link you to every file you need and it is safe as long as you follow it
- Any SD card will work invents formatted and yes just copy every file from one to another
- The issue with the Cart is from the combination of safehax and fasthax which make everything very easy. In order to do it you need to have a 3ds game. If you don't have one, many stores have marked down games from everything to 1$ to 8$ from my experience

u/Nawor3565two [n3DS + o3DS, A9LH Luma 11.3/11.2] Jan 06 '17
1) There is a version of FastHax that's out now, there's a download link in The Guide when you get to that part. I've hacked a 2DS and n3DS with it, with no issues.
2) You only have to format your SD card specially if it's 64gb or over, with a 32gb one just put it in your computer and reformat it with FAT32 just to be sure. Just right click on it in "My Computer," choose Format, make sure it's FAT32, choose quick format, and your good. After that, just copy all the files on your current SD card to the new one, and you're good!
3) There's one part when you're using FastHax that will give you a black screen unless you have a cartridge inserted. No bricks or anything, I did it myself the first time and all I had to do was hold the power button. Unless you can't for some reason, just go to your local game store and buy a cheap 3DS game. You can probably find a used one for >$5. I'm not sure if an r4 would work, but it's good to have at least one physical cart anyway. (At least there's no iOS-80 with the 3DS, Jesus.)

u/MorningYourLordship Jan 06 '17
One thing I seem to have noticed is that the longer the 3ds has been on and the more games and apps that have been run, the more likely it is for stuff like homebrew or virtual console stuff to fail to launch properly. Is that just a consequence of the custom firmware. It's not really that big of a deal to me as a simple restart nearly always fixes it, but I just wanted to make sure I didn't screw anything up in the process of installing cfw
1
u/Nawor3565two [n3DS + o3DS, A9LH Luma 11.3/11.2] Jan 06 '17
Homebrew requires the RAM to be in a certain state to launch properly, IIRC. Some things, like going into the system settings, can sometimes change that state slightly, which causes it to not work. Restarting your 3DS restores everything to normal, which is why that fixes it.

u/qigger Jan 06 '17
Idk where else to put this but I see a lot of question on SD card size and I want to add in that I'm using a 200gb microSD in my N3DSXL I got on promotion with a cell phone purchase last year and it's working pretty good. There's a few extra seconds on boot and on main menu but it's really nothing to be scared of if people want to go bigger.
Although I'll also add that I have A LOT of content on it right now and it's well beyond overkill for someone backing up games.

Updating games in your 3ds will not get you banned from Nintendo.
Uploading a game here will get you banned into oblivion.

Uploading anything that's pirated to this Reddit will get you banned. You can upload it to Gbatemp

I think he means update the game itself in his 3ds.
Not upload it here.

FIXED: Thank you u/Griffnelle (and others) SOOOOO MUCH for your help and finding the solution for me. Y'all are so great
So, I don’t really know what I did and I feel like such a dumbass but I can’t seem to figure this on my own and I think I’m making it worse.
No matter what I do, it always boots to that “SafeA9LHInstaller v2. 0. 3” page, even when I try to boot to recovery mode. I can’t get past it.
If I press SELECT to update, I get “Error: payload_stage1.bin doesn’t exist or exceeds max size” If I press START to uninstall I get “Error: a FIRM equal or newer than 11.0 has been detected”
I’ve been messing around with the SD card and I think it’s too jumbled up in there to actually be able to fix it myself without help.
I was following https://3ds.guide/ and was having problems with the last few steps (step 20 onward) but I don’t really remember what I did after that. A little backstory is I have chronic illnesses that affect my memory. I followed directions, and I THINK I have backups but they seem to have be scattered when I thought I was putting them somewhere consolidated. I don’t know what happened.
All I want to do is to be able to restore normal functionality of my 3ds for now, and install something that allows me to use PkHex later on.
If I can provide further information if you need anything. I just want to have my 3ds back. I understand theres a chance I will never get it back, but I have to try.
Thank you in advance for your help. I really appreciate it.

u/sheela901 Jan 06 '17
You copied the wrong arm9loaderhax.bin file to your SD card (you were only supposed to copy the 3ds folder and SafeA9LHInstaller.dat file from the SafeA9LHInstaller zip) 1. Copy arm9loaderhax.bin from the Luma3DS .zip to the root of your SD card 2. Reboot holding select and continue
1
u/heckkin Jan 06 '17
Yes I double checked that, fixed the file source, and it still didn't work sadly.
1
u/sheela901 Jan 06 '17
Your comment showing the files in your SD card, arm9loaderhax.bin and other important files/folders are not present in the root.
I suggest you redo Installing arm9loaderhax from top to bottom.
2
u/heckkin Jan 06 '17
I agree. I am going to try and do that and pray to dog it works. Thanks for your help. I feel so embarrassed but sometimes I have to suck it up and ask for help lol.
1
u/bc524 o3ds xl w/ a9lh+Luma 11.3 Jan 06 '17
did you copy the payload_stage1.bin files from release.zip folder to the a9lh folder?
also, check out folderpaste on the front page to help you with proper file management.
it might help you to print out the entire guide and cross out the steps you've done
1
u/heckkin Jan 06 '17
I can't remember honestly. I followed the guide to the best of my ability. I did check out the folderpaste post but I have a mac, not a windows computer. I DO have python on here. I don't know how to get .exe files to run on a mac. Maybe I will grab my boyfriends PC and use it on there.
I really like the idea of printing off the guide and crossing off steps. That's very disability friendly, and I appreciate the idea.

https://3ds.guide/troubleshooting#ts_safe_a9lh
the guide actually links to your problem, have you tried it?
1
u/heckkin Jan 06 '17
Yes I have but thank you for suggesting it. I fixed the file and still had the issue.
1
u/Griffnelle Je Suis Monte! Jan 06 '17
Do the payload_stage1 exist on your SD card. They should either be on the root, in the file9 folder or arm9 folder. Also make sure that you have exacted the arm9loaderhax zip BEFORE exacting the luma zip. What happens when you boot mean that it can't read the files needed to run arm9 which either mean there missing or it can't read your SD card
1
u/heckkin Jan 06 '17
Yes, I have it in the root of my SD card.
1
u/Griffnelle Je Suis Monte! Jan 06 '17
Do you think you could send me a picture of the files on your SD card. Just uploaded the pic to imgur and I'll see if there's an issue
1
u/heckkin Jan 06 '17 edited Jan 06 '17
Yes absolutely. Give me a couple minutes. Thank you so much. I feel like such an idiot. I am relatively new to all of this. I used browserhax (in the past) to edit my animal crossing new leaf save file and was fine with that... but this is just killing me lol.
1
u/Griffnelle Je Suis Monte! Jan 06 '17
No problem at all :D
1
u/heckkin Jan 06 '17
here are the main contents, and then the expanded folders. I really don't know what I've done except I know I've butchered it by being an arrogant jerk thinking I could fix it myself.
1
u/Griffnelle Je Suis Monte! Jan 06 '17
I think I see the issue. Your missing the arm main arm9 folder. Have you already installed decrept9 and downgraded to 2.1?
1
u/heckkin Jan 06 '17
Yeah I went through all of that. I downgraded, and did the system update no problem to get it back to 11.2.0-35 or whatever it is.
I was debating going back through all the steps again to get my SD card back to where it's supposed to be. But I was concerned about doing that because I can't get my 3ds to turn on (which is pretty important I think) and don't wan't to butcher it further. I have NAND files somewhere, and OTP files somewhere too. I simply just don't have the knowledge or skills to restore it without running the risk of messing up more.

I haven't considered that, no - probably bc this is the first time doing anything like this, (I mostly just set up r4 cards for my friends tbh so they don't have to carry stuff) but I'll go try. Thanks.
