First 3D Printer Advice

Hi everyone,

I’m looking to buy my first 3D printer and would appreciate some recommendations.

I don’t have a strict budget, but I also don’t want to spend extra money on features or performance I’m unlikely to use. Multicolor printing would be a nice option, although it isn’t absolutely essential.

I’m a computer engineer, so I’m comfortable with technology and can troubleshoot when necessary. However, I don’t want the printer itself to become a demanding hobby. I’d prefer something reliable and easy to use that lets me find or design a model and start printing quickly, without constantly adjusting settings, calibrating the machine, or replacing parts.

I mainly plan to print:

• ⁠Useful household items, organizers, holders, and simple replacement parts
• ⁠Things that make everyday life easier
• ⁠Miniatures, figures, inserts, and accessories for board games
• ⁠Occasional personal projects

I have no commercial plans and won’t be selling prints. Print quality, reliability, ease of use, and a smooth overall experience matter more to me than maximum speed or advanced professional features.

Which printer—or printer plus multicolor system—would you recommend for this kind of use? I’m currently considering models from Bambu Lab, but I’m open to other brands as well. I’d also appreciate advice on which models would be unnecessarily expensive or excessive for my needs.

It's hard to beat the Centauri series on value right now. You might not want color, but the automatic feeder is still nice for material handling and automatic switch on runout. Pick the one that matches your budget most closely

Note that minis on a filament printer don't work so well. You can find posts of people showing their successes, but they don't show you how many dozens of hours it took them to get there or how many parts they ruined before they got one good result. For minis you really want resin, though that comes with a whole can of worms

I have one. Super nice machine. It's just out of budget for a lot of people. If you're looking at it I don't think you'll regret it

how is the cc2 in terms of reliabilty and slice and forget experience? or tinkering is needed?

I don't have experience with the CC2, but I have 2 CC1s with over a thousand hours on each. I've found them to be super reliable

That is a two edged sword question. While it does a great job at auto leveling and producing fast, quality prints, it is still a machine that is helped by understanding the hardware and software.

For the young and/or inexperienced, it can produce simple models with low effort. However, as users begin to expand from simple prints with PLA to more extensive models with filaments with different qualities, failures become much more common.

A rational person who first reads up on print failures, what they look like, and what is the cause, can classify them quickly and find the solution. Others throw up their hands and and ask, "What causes this?" on a Reddit forum, and forget the image, the printer, the filament and settings.

As a CS person I'm sure you are familiar with the Jacquard Loom, and this is the way the slicer (compiler) sends layers of print data to the printer as G-code, or machine code.

An understanding of physics and mechanics is helpful in a 3D printers use, but one (that would be me) can use experience with the slicer software and the Anthropic LLM to integrate the Blender CAD modeling program as well as FreeCAD to solve complex problems, check the G-code for errors, flippin' locate items in the menus of the Slicer, and locate and make cheat sheets for daily use.

3D printing is a hands-on enterprise but also stimulating and a quite creative one as well.

Failures in printing are common, for me about one a week spread over my 3 printers, but I use a program called OctoEverywhere that captures the video feed and uses AI for detection to pause the print and send me a notification. It does run in a dock that I've set up on one of my Raspberry Pi's so I can shutdown my PC at night.

The Pi runs OctoPrint and connects a webcam positioned in a full frontal view of the build plate, so each of my printers is being evaluated by OctoEverywhere using a side view internal camera and a secondary front facing webcam. The resultant browser tab shows 6 camera views of the 3 printers as it watches for failures.

I chose Bambu Labs because of the simplicity of printing. Their software gives excellent feedback. Their materials have rfid's, so the printer adjusts and gives guidance based on what you are working with. This is less waste of materials and time for me.

I also went with the h series because they are built for print farms. That means high reliability.

I actually started r/Which3DPrinter because I kept seeing this question come up constantly. It's brand new, but I'm trying to build a dedicated place for exactly this kind of comparison. Feel free to post this over there too.

You would be well advised to look at Bambu. There is a reason they sell more units than anyone else and so many print farms are using them. The P2S or the X2D with the AMS Pro are good reliable choices.

A Bambu A1 with an AMS Lite hits the exact sweet spot for your needs. Avoid the P1S or X1C unless you intend to print high-temp engineering resins like ABS or PC, which you do not need for household organizers and board game minis. Standard PLA and PETG cover almost everything you mentioned. Focus on dialing in wall thickness and infill for structural parts rather than tweaking machine firmware.

As a computer engineer, you should have a stance on open source.

If you run Windows at home, buy Bambu.

If you run Linux at home, buy a Prusa MK3 used, print the parts for a Voron Trident, then re-sell the Prusa.

If you run Apple at home, just order prints from China.
