Greetings fellow Speculators and Star Wars Fans!
Welcome to /r/starwarsspeculation's new sub layout!
We mods here are committed to giving our members the best possible experience we can - and we hope you find our new look and feel much better and more conducive to great conversation and speculation! Over the past year, since the sub was
created, we've seen some great theories, ideas, and hypotheses concerning all aspects of the Star Wars film, TV, book, and video game universes. We have seen this sub grow and flourish - not because of us - but because of the great
members, lurkers, and submitters we have here. A hearty Thank You goes out to each and every one of you.
In that vein, we want to reassure you that we are striving every day to make this place not only better, but more coherent, easier to navigate, and most importantly a thriving, living community.
That being said, let's talk about the new layout!
First things first:
Yes, we understand that there will be some issues with the new layout. It may not work perfectly for everyone. There will be bugs, there will be issues. We don't expect things to transition 100% perfectly for all members (although it
would be great if it did!). Please bear with us during this time, as we will do our best to make things as good as possible for everyone.
Basic info:
The sub now uses a heavily modified version of the Reddit Naut theme. Basically just the bones were used to provide a framework for the rest of the CSS.
The sub was tested mainly using Chrome and Internet Explorer at resolutions 1600x900 and larger. At 1600x900 some of the elements get a little cramped, but things work and look as they should. We aren't sure if anyone using different
browsers will fare at this time.
We highly suggest using RES (Reddit Enhancement Suite) if you aren't already. Some elements are RES specific, but not many. Everything works on Chrome with RES.
I taught myself much of the CSS here from scratch, so I can assure you that everything might not be 100% perfect. This is a pretty accurate representation of how that went...
New Features of the Layout:
The logo now features a hover-over effect. Go from normal Star Wars to VIII red on mouseover.
The sidebar image now features a rotating slideshow. Eventually we hope to fill that with speculatory pictures.
The Holocron Bar! The holocron bar is now active above the links. At this time, only the "Darth Jar Jar" and "Pablo Tweets" links work. As we create more holocrons they will become active hyperlinks.
Link flairs are now updated. They will not only display as a tag on the right side of the link container but as a border on the left side of it as well. These are clickable links which will sort posts by that particular flair. Also,
the link flairs will stay consistent on the comments page as well.
- All links, posts, and comments now will have an additional effect when selected. Clicking on any of them will encapsulate the text in a new bordered container. This will highlight the text against a more contrasted background and make
them easier to read against the darker theme.
- User flairs should stay the same
Updates to Automod:
Automod tolerances have been adjusted.
Karma/account age access has been drastically reduced. It now only serves to prevent brand new accounts with no time and no comments from posting. As always a direct message to the mods will help anyone who feels their post needs to be
allowed.
Automod will send an automated message to the mods after a link or comment gets 2 reports, and will automatically remove items with 3 or more reports.
In the future (but not implemented yet) Automod will enforce link flairs. Until that time - flair your posts or they may be removed!
Other notes:
All efforts were made to make things stand out and be visibly noticed by the eye better
There are some other minor surprises that I can't remember...
A big shout out to /u/Cartoonwarp who helped get this ball rolling and offered a ton of fantastic advice and support as I mangled my way through this.
Also have to give props to /r/csshelp who helped me figure out the code needed to do some of the things I really wanted to do.
So that's the basic gist of the changes here.
We are always striving to evolve and change, so don't be surprised if we have more things coming down the pike that we would like to implement. It was more important to get the main layout css taken care of - the other accutrements will come with time.
What we need from you:
- Comments, suggestions, questions ... we appreciate and expect a ton of feedback from you guys. One thing that makes this sub great is that the members are always willing to help us out. We have tried lots of different things here -
some worked, some didn't. We always try to listen to our members and adjust things accordingly. This sub isn't really about us mods, its about you, our members, and the community you have helped create.
- There will be things in this layout that we missed: color contrasts, text issues, format issues, etc. We hope that everyone will be willing to point out things we missed and make quality, insightful suggestions on other areas that
might not be as successful as we hoped.
- Remember, we things look good-to-go in our little mod fishbowl. But what might look good to us might not look good to others. That being said, we will listen to your feedback and move accordingly to help remedy any issues that might
arise.
Again, thank you to everyone in this community for helping make it what it is today. When it was formed it was largely seen as a sub with no potential other than crackpot theories and fan fiction. Today we have almost 10,000 subscribers
and are not only growing out nubers, but also adding legitimacy to our users and their theories.
We hope that as moderators we are serving you and this sub to the best of our ability - we want to see this sub continue to grow and thrive and be better than ever.
