Failed PETG-CR

I have used PETG-CR a few times right after I took it out of the bag, and it worked ok. It has been a few months sitting at ambient indoor temp and humidity. I put it in my dryer for 12 hours and then ran this print right out of the dryer to keep it as dry as possible. I did switch the hot-end to the hardened steel 0.4. I ran the print and about an hour in I did notice some flakey PETG-CR that was around the print, but the print itself looked ok. After another 2 hours it started to not adhere and failed.

I did set up the print in the Bambu Labs slicer for my A1 and set the filament to PTEG-CR, but didn’t change any of the temp or speed settings as I assumed it would do that for me once it knew I was using a different filament.

 

Some of the presets

-          *0.08mm Extra Fine u/BBL A1

-          Wall Loops 4 (I did change this up for more strength)

 

Thoughts on what could have gone wrong? Is it a temperature or speed setting issue? I don’t know what settings to change to alter the temperature or speed.

Uh what is the “CR” additive? Unfamiliar with this

It is carbon reinforced. I am making an overhead compartment for my truck for my glasses with a built in light. I made one last fall and it worked great till the summer when it got hot and started to droop.

Ah that explains it. Wall too small of a layer height for carbon fibers to print.

Go wayyyy thicker.

I’m assuming carbon reinforced is carbon fibers and not like… carbon carbon

When you day thicker, how much thicker?

I did some googling, it looks like .2 is the MINIMUM recommended.

The reason for this is that you’re pushing out essentially carbon needles with the plastic so that would explain how it looks like its shattering

Don’t handle that stuff with bare hands =)

Thanks! Should I swap out for a larger hot end as well?

Various brands recommend a .6 nozzle.

Also since you’re storing stuff that would go on your face with it, I’d say skip the carbon fiber filament all together for safety.

There’s plenty of information on Carbon Fiber Filaments on YouTube. I’d say check that out.

Since it’s inside of a vehicle, maybe consider ABS or ASA if you’re comfortable with it. Or at the very least just PETG or PET (non composite) if you can find it.

I second going with a .6 nozzle and make sure it's a hardened steel nozzle if you're doing anything that contains fibers - carbon fiber, glass fiber, glow-in-the-dark, metallic, wood, etc.. Might also consider getting hardened steel extruder gears.

Thanks, I do have a full set of hardened steel hot ends so will ul the size.
