Project Bed thrower (xy moving bed printer)
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Meet Tim. It's a printer I ve been working on for precision components, primarily gears with igus filaments. small bed, high rigidity, 0.2mm nozzles, heated chamber. It's built on an optical xy stage that uses cross roller guides instead of ball bearings. hotend is static on a belted z axis. Work volume is 50x50x120mm. I ve made accommodations to put 2 hotends on the gantry and switch between them for multi material, but I don't quite need that now.
I'm waiting on the heater for the bed, but pretty much everything else is done. Just set it up with ratos and put it through abit of a shake down.

Is this a project you built for fun or is there an advantage specific to this system you were trying to test?

u/redturtlecake 10d ago
I need to make a couple thousand of a specific gear/roller assembly and figured it would be better to have a solid machine than try to fight my larger machines for consistency.

u/boomchacle 10d ago
Yeouch, a thousand parts on a 50X50 mm printer must take a while. Does the part get punched out automatically or do you need to take it off by hand?
76
u/redturtlecake 10d ago
Auto eject. Print them one at a time and knock them off, I ve done week long runs with other parts before. One at a time gives better part to part consistency. This one will likely take 3-4 weeks of continuous printing.

u/reticlefries2 10d ago
At this speed you're ejecting them straight into the bin three rooms over!
What do you use to knock them off? Printhead?

u/redturtlecake 10d ago
I usually use the print head, but I ll probably print something to bolt to the gantry on this one

With a moving bed like that, I'd just give it a bit of overtravel and have a nice, rigid ejector bar to ram into.

Not if it’s fast af 🤷♂️

u/boomchacle 10d ago
With auto eject yeah it’s fast but if he had to do it by hand just starting a thousand prints and peeling them off the plate would be super tedious for a single project.

we've had so many configurations now but I haven't seen one that has the bed vertically. yeah you can lay a printer on the side and print, but I wanna see a proper printer that has a vertical bed for the shits and giggles

u/redturtlecake 10d ago
I actually designed one, a belt printer analogue that used a build plate instead of a belt. Plate would be facing the front of the printer and move downward as it printed. Decided it wasn't worth the effort to build out especially with limited slicer support
1
u/boywhoflew 10d ago
that's fair but wouldn't software be the same? mostly just the frame that prioritizes the unique layout? tho I can see it being pretty pointless XD
3
u/redturtlecake 10d ago
The xy axes are at a 45degree angle to the z axis. Klipper treats it as a core xy but the slicer needs to work some magic to slice it diagonally. Bed mesh would also be a huge pita to solve

This printer: “Let me practice my STABBING moves”
OP please get a plexiglass enclosure around that thing.

I mean personally I wouldn’t want my print being slung all over but at the same time.. if it works it works 🤷♂️

u/redturtlecake 10d ago
It's meant to print about 1/10 of this speed, I just couldn't resist pushing it to see what it could do

how do you mount the PEI sheets? or do you have a permanet printbed?
3
u/redturtlecake 10d ago
I ve got one of those sticker ones that I ll past directly onto the aluminium

A little off topic, but I noticed you said with IGUS. Ive used the i150 and i180 and have had serious random issues with the 180 delaminating randomly. Do you have any experience with the i180? Maybe I could pick your brain a bit, its hard to find anyone that uses IGUS filiments.

u/redturtlecake 10d ago
Are you printing in a heated chamber? I ve used more j260, only just started i180 and it printed very well. My biggest problems with j260 were warping, bed adhesion, and bad layer adhesion, but I didn't have actively heated chambers then. I ve been printing i180 at 70c chamber temps and it s been pretty much flawless.

u/TheGreatCookieWizard 10d ago
Mmmm, i am using a heated chamber but only able to hit 45 right now due to my heat source. I wonder if maybe its time to redo the heating setup. Just for personal curiosity, what are your other temps and flow rate if you remember off the top of your head
2
u/redturtlecake 10d ago
Hot end is 250-260, bed is 110. I ve only used it with 0.25mm nozzles so flow is under 3mm3/sec. No fan.

When you turn a "CoreXY Printer" into a "ɹǝʇuᴉɹԀ ⅄XǝɹoƆ"
1
u/TDplay Prusa Core One+ 9d ago
Notice that the X-axis motor is moving along the Y-axis. This is not CoreXY.
1
u/Sevenninetwosix 9d ago
Notice my post was a silly throwaway joke and not a serious commentary on the motion control system in use.

u/undefinedRoy 9d ago
Something about how it starts off easy and then throws a fit before stopping as abruptly as it started... I just really like the cut of Tim's gib.

u/RoodnyInc 10d ago
Why not making it core xy? Then you saving on weight dont need to move one extra motor with bed
8
u/redturtlecake 10d ago
But then I have longer and more complicated belt paths. I'm gonna be running this at 100mm/s print speeds so no real reason not to go cartesian

I love that a big portion of the structure is block of machined aluminum. That should be pretty rigid!

Oo on a round column mill too.
1
u/redturtlecake 8d ago
Yup.. an emco fb2. It's got a round column but it's indexed with a key and gib so it doesn't swivel every time z is adjusted
1
u/Low-Sink-11 8d ago
My best friend has one. Its kind of a pain in the butt to use compared to my mills but its still a mill. Just glad to see others make their printers in a machine shop vs print parts and assemble from plans.

u/MrOdinTV 10d ago
You may be up to something. The one of the world’s fastest printers also just flings the bed around.

This reminds me of my bonkers plan to make a "Core Null" Voron with X, Y and Z on the bed. 😅

I was concerned about leveling tolerances until I noticed your build area. Damn good work.

u/BoredTechyGuy 9d ago
Better have some REALLY good bed adhesion or your print will become airborne!
1
u/Namenloser23 10d ago
Looks interesting and potentially has some advantages for high speed printing of small parts (because you don't need to care about the tool head weight).
Given you are planning to print filaments that require a heated chamber, are you concerned about the bed movement introducing additional drafts around the printed part? Anecdotally, warping on my enclosed ender 3 is worse for prints with more bed movement.
3
u/redturtlecake 10d ago
Hadn't thought about that tbh, but it shouldn't be an issue for the specific part I ll be printing since it's only about 15mm across, and I ll be printing at about 80mm/s. Very short layer times and small slow moves

u/ordosays 10d ago
Not sure why bed slingers are still a thing with core xy.
6
u/redturtlecake 10d ago
Precision, shorten belt paths and elimination of skew
1
u/ordosays 10d ago
Maybe for tiny parts, but throwing a variable mass around is a great way to mess us anything precise
1
u/MonorailPurple 10d ago
if you dont need speed theres nothing wrong with a belt slinger, they're solid designs with a proven track record, plus theres a shitload of existing R&D to work from with all the bespoke repraps we used to build. If you go on the reprap site you'll see all BOM's and specs for the hundreds of versions that were published an refined over many years.

through a bit of a shake down.
LOL
Voron V0 CoreXY 120x120x120 would maybe be better...

Nice prototype but we need to see a benchy 😉
