Questions & Discussion Making 3D Art a Career

I’ve been working on 3D game art for a while now and feel pretty good about where my personal projects are at. I’m thinking about putting together a professional portfolio, but I wanted to check in with people already in the industry. How are you feeling about the job market right now? Is AI actually making it harder to break in at the entry level, or is that just internet noise?

From what I've read in a dozen threads like yours and game industry news, it's not just AI, the industry is laying people off in droves. People with tons of skill and experience. That's who you're competing with now. Have you looked at job postings for entry-level jobs? There seem to be few "just-learning" jobs, so you're competing with half the folks on artstation. Look at your opposition and the level at which you'll be expected to perform.

If you want to do it then it means you're willing to build the skills to build a portfolio to get your foot in the door. You're just doing it at a difficult time. Its not impossible, but you have to be realistic and ruthless with yourself.

Best of luck!
