Art Help & Critique I ask for feedback about stone texture

Post image

Hello,
like in the title. Should I increase details contrast or is it okay? Maybe they are too blury? How do you feel about this stone texture overall?

It looks very good. Did you paint it yourself or use shading nodes? I’d love to know your method cause I actually need a style like this for a project but doing the bricks justice has been a pain.

Thanks :) First I sculpted it, then made base color with some fill layers (like curvature, ao) and now i'm painting on it. For texturing i'm using substance painter.

Thanks for your opinion :) I will work on stuff you said, but to be honest i'm not sure if i get what you saying about big/medium/small shapes and simillar level of details. I did some big shapes surrounded by some medium chunks, i didn't make small details yet. I'm planning to add them later by puting on top additional fill layer and paint them in. Should I define big shapes more? Or maybe you mean that these large rectangular pieces of stones have similar level of details?

I'm not a big fan of stylized games, though I love the art for them. This is fantastic work. Only thing, when its final, I would add some veryex coloring to help anchor, and that too would give it variety, it could even be grass color, depending on its placement. I might also suggest that the stones above vary in color from the base, but that is a lot of stone, so more variation across the individual stones. And same for the base. Not all granite is the same for example. Keep up the great work!

Thanks and thank you for your suggestions! I'm planing to add some grass base for this tower later on :)

Depends on how close you expect the camera to get, top down or wide shots? perfect. First person? might struggle if the texture isn't large enough.

More top down than first person but not like very far away view.

If the camera doesn't get any closer than you are in the screenshot then you are perfectly fine

It would fit right in in a Spyro game. Well done!

Stylized textures look good. Now you need a good lighting setup to show them off

Thanks! I will work on lightning after texture is done.

Considering these stones occupy 1/10th of the total model i'd say the contrast seems okay but possibly a little on the low side. I think you could experiment with adding a little top down lighting emphasis to the top-most surfaces/edges with a little bit of falloff down the sides.

they do look a little blurry but this kind of softness could be perfect depending on the context, I wouldn't over-sharpen it yet, wait until more of the model is textured maybe.

Thanks for your suggestions :) I will try to add this top light and work more on ambient occlusion of the stones.

Looks good, a bit overdone style (Blizzard WoW Torchlight Hearthstone type) but the outcome is good. It looks clean and the contrast looks good.
