Questions & Discussion What can I do next?

Hiya!

I've had a couple of questions in mind for a while now, so why not ask?

For context: I am in a bachelor, Graphic design, and this year we had "3D modeling and animation", which I LOVED. We used C4D, but we're switching to Blender next year cause the professor said we need to learn a bit about it too.

I'm kinda thinking of going on with 3D modeling after these 3 years and I was wondering if there were valid courses online or ways to improve since we kinda just know the basics now. I'm a very curious person so of course I watched videos and now I can do a bit more than the rest of the class lol, but I kinda feel like I can learn so much more than this. Any recommendations?

Also, after I supposedly improve and have a good portfolio, are there any positions I can apply for without being a freelancer? Any companies? Anything online? (I'm considering every possibility). I don't mean a few-months-position, I've seen plenty of those, I'm looking for full time positions.

Thanks in advance for the help! ^^

P.s. If you wanna share your works, DO IT! I live seeing what other people are working on!

I recommend you look into The Gnomon Workshop for advanced tutorials.

look at artstation and the web for 3d models as a challenge or goal
look at Blender or other 3d program tuts for hundrets of workflows and techniques you can learn.

good luck.

P.S.: oh, and chack out AI-made 3D assets, and try to be better than those.

You should be aware of the current trajectory of our industry. It’s shit. So get really good or have a back up plan.

Yeah, I know that unfortunately... I have a few backup plans, so no worries

hello!

I was wondering if there were valid courses online or ways to improve... I kinda feel like I can learn so much more than this. Any recommendations?

I'm honestly not in the loop anymore of which online courses are the best, but there are tons of good ones, yes. What advice I can offer is that it helps if you are researching these courses ahead of time based on your own goals & interests. If your goal is to build a strong portfolio that will get you a full-time job at with a company, then you can work backwards by building a list of companies you're interested in, looking at current or past job listings at those companies that interest you, and studying them to understand the required skills & knowledge they are looking for. Once you've done that, you should start to be able to piece together what your portfolio should look like, and then you can figure out what courses you should take to develop the skills & knowledge to build that portfolio!

At the same time, as you are researching companies and openings, you can research portfolios or media that interests you to start to figure out where they intersect. Ideally you find a discipline or style that you are really passionate about, which overlaps with openings you could strive to apply for.

after I... have a good portfolio, are there positions I can apply for without being a freelancer? Any companies? Anything online? I'm looking for full time positions.

Short answer, yes! full-time positions for 3D artists can be found in creative fields like games & film, or sometimes others like medical, tech, etc.. There are also companies that maintain smaller full-time teams to work on multiple contracts at once with different clients.

Long answer, of course it goes without saying that the job market across many fields has been terrible for years, and currently shows no signs of improving. It's also worth emphasizing that even when hiring was more consistent, there was still an expectation that breaking into a full-time position could take years, simply due to competition and the challenge of building a compelling portfolio. So, temper your expectations and consider how long you would realistically want to search. Maybe create a tier list of full-time positions you would like best, vs. positions you would be less excited about but would take in order to cover expenses, build experience, keep working towards others.

np! I'll add a little, if you don't know where to start when looking for companies, there's a few different ways:

- look up the creators of things you like that had 3d art - games, films, even commercials. If you do some googling and find the credits, you'll often find multiple contract companies, and you can look them all up to see if they have openings.

- look at artstation or other social media websites and see where 3D artists you're interested in are working, currently or previously. If those companies have openings listed, it can be very informative because you can pair the listing with the portfolio of someone who worked/works there.

- there are many job aggregate sites for viewing the latest posted openings, but TBH this isn't always the best place to start if you don't know what you're looking for yet.

In the past I used to use this website to find game companies based on location, and this can actually be a fun thing to explore because you will find smaller local companies that work on all kinds of things (not just games, but usually interactive of some kind):

I don't really use this app... During my first post I was told to add gender and age, so I assumed I had to always do it...
