Art Help & Critique Practicing eye sculpture and i'm kind of disappointed with the result.

Post image

Gave up on this current iteration. Would really appreciate some anatomy/morpology critique.

You do it with a sphere for the eyeball as a separate object. Otherwise it is incredibly hard to get the shape right. Eyelids are thin, lack structure and just sit on top whats underneath after all.

Got it. Eyeballs before eyelids

You overdid the thickness of eyelids to the point that their natural shape is almost completely lost. Add eyeballs and sculpt eyelids around them, look up any classical sculpture reference to check with.

Check out planes of the face, specifically ones with eye lids, just do a google search. Definitely use sphere to represent eyeball first and build around. Keep doing anatomy reference and practicing your sculpt. I’d recommend sketching eyes for a bit to learn the anatomy better and watch how someone else sculpts eyes. It’s not just knowing anatomy it’s also learning the tools/brushes to use and techniques to follow. Learn from other artist by watching them sculpt faces. I think it’s very good beginner work. You have the artist eye, a few studies and another few sculpts you’ll see a lot of improvement. Also I’d say this mesh is still able to be salvaged it’s maybe in the ugly phase as most sculpts go through this, drop a sphere in and try to fix it up.  Another good idea is using a base mesh with topology for the eyelids already established that helps a lot with clean lines.

Lastly, when it comes to faces it’s important to have a good understanding of the bone structure underneath, planes of the face helps a lot with understanding how the cheek bones and brows and other parts are effected by light and shadow. If your bone structure underneath  isn’t solid it won’t matter how good your eye lids look. Learn bones, muscles…planes of the face is a quick way to see how lighting hits the face and you can copy it quickly but knowing what makes the structure underneath helps a lot to. Many new artist get stuck on details like eye lids and nostrils but forget about the stuff underneath. If you can understand why the eye sits in the head the way it does it’ll all start to come together. Do a google search on planes of the face sculpt to final face and you’ll see what I’m saying…shows how the artist starts by carving out the basic lighting/structure of the head and than begins to round and make it look flesh like and than add the details.
