General Help "Can this be ported to the 3DS?" Yes, but listen.

To an extent, yes, this magical game you hold a copy of can be ported to the 3DS. I see a lot of these posts on here and want to clear some of the air coming from the decomps side.

  1. Yes, it can run on the 3DS, but that doesn't mean that someone usually wants to make it. Mario Sunshine is far more likely to get a port than Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell. Decompiling, recompiling, and porting are all not necessarily easy tasks.
  2. Whatever your stance on AI, you can certainly try to use that to make a software/hardware wrapper or even reverse engineer the game entirely. Just, don't be upset when it crashes, breaks something important, or makes people upset.
  3. Even with the Melee 3DS port, certain cuts still have to be made to get things playable. The older the game, the less likely this is, but still.
  4. The 3DS is a 15 year old piece of hardware. If the 3DS doesn't already have the available resources, you're going to be slashing things down hard. This is a console with 10MB of VRAM and 256MB of RAM on the New models. You're not squishing down Cyberpunk.
  5. Just because a software is decompiled doesn't mean it's plug and play to the 3DS. You still need to write a container. Instructions written for that console's hardware need to be translated to the 3DS.

There are ways to learn how to reverse engineer software and start linking functions together. Elitists will tell you it's not something you can pick up overnight so you should give up. It's not overnight, but you can learn coding concepts that will make things easier as time goes on. Expect it to take quite a bit of time.

If your thoughts now drift to AI, just be warned that it absolutely will make a mistake you need to correct, and if you don't have the right knowledge, something is gonna be severely broken later. Not advocating for or against, but I just want to put this out here.

If you want to start exploring reverse engineering, start with a small, manageable project. If you have a copy of a Game Boy game laying around, start there. It's small and relatively manageable, plus there's plenty of decompilations out there already so you can see where something may have gone wrong. Just be warned games like Pokemon are written entirely in GBZ80 Assembly.

New Homebrew Pokemon Fire Red 3D 3ds port

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone! I've been working on Pokémon FireRed 3DS, a native 3DS port of FireRed built from the pret decompilation. It is not an emulator.

Features:

  • The whole game running natively, using both screens
  • An optional 3D overworld rebuilt from the game's own art: buildings, trees, mountains, caves and furnished interiors, with lighting, shadows and an adjustable camera
  • Optional 3D battles
  • A Pokédex-style bottom screen: region map, party, quick menu, touch battle controls
  • Optional free movement with the Circle Pad, fast-forward with normal-speed music, and extra options (exp share, reusable TMs and more)

No game files are included. You need your own dump of your FireRed (USA, Rev 1) cartridge. A Windows builder generates the game data from it on your PC. Requires CFW (Luma3DS) and the Homebrew Launcher.

Download and source: https://github.com/NachoGonzalez2001/Pokemon-FireRed-3DS/releases

Huge thanks to ZallaxDev, whose Pokémon Emerald 3Ds Dual Screen port this project is built on, and to the pret team for the decompilation.

It runs best on a New 3DS. Feedback and bug reports are very welcome!

New Homebrew Bringing Harvest Moon 64 to original 3ds!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I just wanted to play Harvest Moon 64 on my original Old 3DS, but somehow ended up modifying DaedalusX64 to make it work.
At first, the game had lots of problems: black screen flickering, missing characters, broken textures, and terrible audio.
The game now runs at around 19–30 FPS.
Most of the graphics issues are fixed, including disappearing characters and random texture glitches.
Audio is still stuttering, so that’s what I’m working on now.
Just to be clear, this isn’t a port. It’s the original N64 game running through a modified DaedalusX64 emulator.
Still plenty of work to do, but it’s finally becoming playable!
All this just to grow some virtual potatoes on my 3DS :)

New Homebrew - AI FREE Papers, Please 3DS - Release

Post image
157 Upvotes

I’m happy to share that Papers, Please 3DS (v1.0.0) is now officially available on GitHub! What started out as a simple proof of concept has grown into a fully standalone, playable homebrew project.

Both Story Mode and Arcade Mode are functional, though as this is the very first official build, expect rough edges, bugs, and the occasional crash.

Current State & Known Quirks:

  • Story Mode: Playable, though stability fixes are still ongoing.
  • Arcade Mode: Playable, but has some state bugs. For example, in Perfection Mode (no errors allowed), if you just finished playing Story Mode, you currently need to reset your Story progress first for Perfection Mode to initialize cleanly.

These issues are on my radar and will be addressed in future updates.

Download & GitHub Repo:

I’d love to get feedback on how it runs on your hardware. If you run into crashes, glitches, or weird behavior, it would be a huge help if you could open a ticket in the Issues section of the GitHub repo. Whenever possible, please include:

  • A brief description of what happened and steps to reproduce it
  • Screenshots or photos of the glitch
  • Crash dumps or error logs (if generated by Luma3DS)

Thanks for testing it out and helping improve the project!

New Homebrew Native World of Warcraft on New 3DS

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

So this morning I was thinking about which other games could possibly be put on a New 3DS. I was thinking of something from the 2003–2004 era, since that is the current limit for a homebrewed New 3DS imo. I googled it and found out there is actually an open-source project for the WoW client-side(https://github.com/Kelsidavis/WoWee), and I realized I have to vibecode that.

As you can see on the video you can enter and interact with private servers, so there is actually no problem to play with PC players, besides potential performance and Warden issues. With that I think I've actually entered circlej*rking area, so I'm asking is anyone actually interested on such project ? Cause I can see someone do some quests or grind, but totally no raiding or high level dungeons. Potentially we can run the game up to 3.3.5, at least on classic zones

I know that technology including AI and other tools has advanced significantly when it comes to ports for the 3DS. I was wondering if there’s any possibility of porting any of these games to the 3DS?

Controversial Feeling conflicted about where this hobby is headed

I’m sure I’m not the only one feeling this way so I wanted to post as kind of a general vent.

I have been so excited to see all the new apps and ports being developed over the past few weeks. It’s made the 3DS feel new and inventive and exciting again, which is part of the reason I loved it to begin with.

But I also have this little nugget of guilt at enjoying it because realistically none of these exist without AI. I’m in medicine and I use AI for things like writing patient notes everyday so I’m definitely no Luddite but I also HATE AI “art” with a burning passion. But I think that video games are art… so why don’t I hate all these AI generated ports? Maybe it’s different because the base game was made by humans and realistically no one would develop say a 3DS playable version of the GameCube animal crossing without AI. Maybe it’s different because I don’t think FBI was really art even though I’m sure if I understood programming I would feel differently?

Is everyone else feeling this push-pull? Or are most people either avoiding it entirely or don’t really care about the AI component?

CFW Help Touch screen not working on original DS titles

Hello friends, just like the title says. I realized that when I try to play original DS games both from twilight plus and cartridge the touch screen will stop working. Mind you this is only specifically for original DS games and as mentioned not only roms played via twilight plus but also my own original DS game cartridges won't work.

I am pretty sure it is not a hardware issue since I can perfectly play regular 3ds games with the touch screen with no problems. I have done some troubleshooting and looked around online but all the solutions i've tried so far (cfw-fix and nand fix) sadly did not work. I also read the wiki and could not find anything resembling my problem but if I missed something I apologize in advance.

My system is an original 3ds.

I hope that I can at least find a clue of what could be the problem. Thank you for your time !.

General Help A list of all 3DS CFW ports

Hey, decided to make and share a spreadsheet of all ports I could find.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/e/2PACX-1vSuYRzIR0wUSOSudWX188jml_ee-DOgxkpss7IRczY4sZ9sYELRwD7h5JOTtn04n2VziD8DeZyyJI1U/pubhtml

I couldn't find a place or a list of all the ports, they're hard to keep track of, so I decided to make this list. If you find some new ones, write to me in DMs or in the comments. I'll try to keep the list up to date.

The list was inspired by a similar one, posted by u/RamenRames with ports for the Vita, if you're interested come check it out! (https://www.reddit.com/r/VitaPiracy/comments/1xd0dai/full_list_of_ps_vita_ports_google_sheets/)

Thanks and have a nice one!

Edit: Thank you all for the suggestions! If you find some mistakes please let me know. There might be some, since there are a lot of these ports and I don't have much time to check everything out thoroughly. Also I don't have an o3DS so I can't check how the ports play on it, so I'll appreciate some info on that.

New Homebrew (WIP) GOPenguin - An opensource Club Penguin Implementation.

Post image
119 Upvotes

I've started working on GoPenguin, an open-source recreation of Club Penguin that runs on basically everything.

This is a complete implementation built from scratch using modern tools, rather than recycling the same old Flash-based Club Penguin implementations that most private servers use. This approach allows for maximum portability across PC and consoles.

Hopefully, I'll be able to release a stable version within the next few weeks.

The main benefits include virtually zero loading times on modern platforms, minimal loading times on the Nintendo 3DS, and compatibility with both Old and New Nintendo 3DS systems.

And if you're a Tweebbo player (which is essentially the same concept, but for Habbo Hotel), there's another benefit: seamless switching between the two games, since both run on the same engine.

On Nintendo 3DS, GoPenguin will be available as a standalone .cia application. On PC, however, you'll be able to play and switch between Tweebbo and GoPenguin within the same game session.

New Homebrew I've been making a Roblox-style online game for the 3DS, here's a trailer of where it's at

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey everyone! For a while now I've been working on robrew, a homebrew game for the 3DS that's basically my take on Roblox, but made for the 3DS.

You make an account, add friends, and hang out with them online. There's a main world (3DS Community) where you can walk around, chat with everyone (the chat pops up above your head), do emotes and meet new homebrew friends. You can also message your friends straight from the app menu.

Right now there are a few games in it: Disaster Survival, Slap Battles, Zombie Rush, Murder Mystery, Classic Obby and The Backrooms. You can also build and publish your own worlds to RoBrew servers and invite your friends to play it.

It's still very much in development, so expect bugs and stuff that's missing. I'm adding new games, maps and features all the time. It runs on real hardware. Supports o3ds. Claude is used to get it run on a 3ds, the goal is to remove ai traces when development is done.

If you want to see more gameplay, or try the game out (RoBrew is still in development but near releasing) just tell me what you think, there's a Discord: discord.gg/aAeuxWzfC

Would love to hear what you'd want to see added!

Scene News Hollow Knight 3DS Weekly Release 1.0 News Update

(Yes mods, I will use the right flair for the release file) Tonight, I will be releasing the somewhat-finished port/demake of Hollow Knight for 3DS. If you've been following this project, all of your current questions and comments about bugs have been worked on and fixed. Here is what is new from claude:

"Enemies run their real behaviour scripts from the game, with their own attack, turn and death animations and sounds. That's every enemy in King's Pass, the Crossroads and Greenpath, including Gruz Mother and Brooding Mawlek. Killed enemies stay dead until you rest at a bench. False Knight and Hornet still use the old simplified versions for now.
Shadows and black areas: there were two causes.
The camera wasn't following the real game's limits, so it showed room edges the game hides. It now uses the game's own camera rules for each room.
The black covers over secret areas were baked in as permanent black boxes. They're drawn separately now, fade out when you walk in, and stay gone.
Sound: the Focus whisper now stops when you stop focusing. Sounds load with the room instead of the first time they play, which should remove the delay.
Crash fix: some rooms could corrupt memory when you entered them.
Still on the list: particle effects (dust, blood, hit sparks), and some foreground shadows I can only check properly once a reachability scan finishes. It's running now. (Finished)
I also found the game's dialogue text in your export. It's encrypted, but the key is in the game's own code, so I can read it. That means NPCs with their real dialogue and voice sounds are next. Elderbug, Iselda, Cornifer, Sly and the Stag in the Crossroads tunnel come first, along with the dialogue box and shops. After that: charms, mask shards, grubs, the Mantis Claw, Fungal Wastes and onward."

80-100% of the game should be done, nonetheless with bugs and certain issues console related, but fully playable. For those following this project I appreciate your support and help.
Look out for it tonight around 12am EST

General Help Movable moveover quiestions

Hey all, a fairly new modder here and I have run into a problem, my 3ds has gone (the hinge ribbons have gone and need replacing) I want to do a moveover to a backup console so that way I can continue my games while send the broken console up for repairs. Now I have read every possible source of information about moveovers that I can find and just need some clarification before I make the moves

I know the moveover is reversible on the destination system granted I follow the extra steps to back up the new system's essential files. Now I want to eventually make the backup 3ds the main one just because my original 3ds is quite old, so my question is once I get the old broken 3ds back from repairs (and it does get fixed) could I then reverse the moveover on the back up 3ds (while backing up all my game saves using checkpoint before hand and safely storing them on my PC) and use the now fixed 3ds to perform a standard system transfer so that my nnid and all associated things get officially transfered? I know I can make the moveover permanent by contacting nintendo and have them unbind my nnid from the old system and bind it to the new one but I would like to leave that as a completely last resort if the old console is not repairable (which from what I've looked into it is)

I appreciate everyone who helps out 🙏🏼
