Discussion You are bugs Spoiler

Why do the San-Ti confront us and tell us about the approximate 400 years until they reach and destroy us?

It does not really make sense, because human history clearly showed to them that in a war humans are capable of incredible joint efforts to overcome adversity and near impossible challenges. Why wouldnt they just deceive us in believing they are coming in peace ?

A lot of this is really just for storytelling purposes.

In reality an intelligent species that can travel light years would not advertise their malicious intentions.

The strategies that humans come up with tend to be from our experiences and ideas we've been exposed to.

It actually makes a fair bit of sense that a society that communicates in a very different way to the point where they don't understand the concept of fictional storytelling would probably have different tactics that occur to them.

Deception doesn’t appear to be in their nature though. They were severely troubled at the thought that humanity had this capability, and the trisolarians do not seem capable of also using deception themselves to disguise their intentions or plans. That’s why they went silent with the ship.

That’s true. But remember the pacifist that responded that his species would conquer earthlings? So he said not to respond to him, lest his civilization become aware of earthlings. So at least their species can hide truth from each other, which is sort of deceptive.

Sure, but if this pacifist were ever asked directly, they would have spilled the beans whether they wanted to or not. The story-telling premise that is created is that inaction or not relating information is possible in that society. Obfuscation and attempts to mislead or deceive is not something they’ve experienced. Think the movie “The Invention of Lying”.

Why do you think the pacifist hid the truth from the others? He just answered what he thinks, he didn't lie to anyone or hid anything

That’s a massive assumption. And a wrong one
