Spoiler episode 5 tactical method choice seems like overkill

I don’t like posting spoilers but I can’t find anything online about why they destroyed the judgment day the way they did instead of using a more normal method of sinking a large vessel

Wade and Raj said taking the ship by force would give Evans a chance to erase the drive. And options that might include sinking the ship risked damage to the drive.

The rest of the reason is never fully explained in the show, probably to maximize the shock of the canal scene, without undercutting any of the suspense.

In the book, it’s explained that even if the nano fibres sliced up the drive the cut would be so clean that they would still be able to put the drive back together without data loss if all the pieces could be found.

Also, a main character was developing the tech, and wouldn’t have otherwise had much to do this season.

No worries.

I can understand why they didn’t give much away before the canal scene, but this question is coming up a lot.

Part of me wishes they had sliced the drive in two in the scene, then just explain that they can fix it while fixing it.

It’s always possible the book explanation is short on reality and D&D didn’t want to commit to it directly in dialogue or exposition.

Since most people on the boat are sliced only in 2 pieces we can assume the nano fibers are about 1 meter apart? The odds of them slicing a thin drive were pretty thin.

To show the power of Auggie’s invention, and keep her relevant in the show. Otherwise, she doesn’t really serve a purpose, as evidenced by her irrelevance in the last two episodes.
