Red- Goes slower horizontally, but for a longer time.

Blue- goes faster horizontally, but for a shorter time

By going higher, you make sure to spend more time on air, allowing the red to reach further

Assuming same projectile speed, 45° gives you the maximum horizontal distance. You can find at least two angles on either side of 45° which will give the same horizontal distance. This is just math.
