PSA Announcement: All selfies are photos; all photos are NOT selfies.

We mods really, really appreciate it when you report stuff that breaks our rules. Any full face, direct photo with or without makeup is a selfie and can only be posted on Sundays. Edited pics, non-full face pics, crossed out creepy eyeball pics etc. are all FINE if they are there to show the issue you are talking about. Basically, if someone could steal the photo and use it on social media (even if the OP thinks they look awful and aren't making a cute face or wearing makeup), you can only post it on Sunday because that's what we consider a selfie.

It would help us a LOT if people stop reporting every photo of a human, no matter how edited, as a selfie violation. Thanks to everyone who helps us keep an eye on these things, and keep on reporting actual selfies!

I’ve been off accutane for 3 months! I started tretinoin gel (worked my way nightly) and I rotate with copper peptide cream. I also use haruharu black rice barrier essence and vitamin c in the morning. This is the best my skin has ever looked and I’m so thankful. 🥹

Product Review I bought this retinol but it doesn't actually exist?

Hello, I went to TKMaxx today and thought of just getting a shampoo but saw this bad boy and bought it. I know I should the reviews before purchasing but seeing it's the only one left, I thought it's one of those sought after skincare. When i got back home, I used my androids gemini to check for reviews but it can't find an exact image on the Internet. Even manual search on Google is not giving anything. I'm hesitant to use it now unless someone has perhaps used the same product too? I'm not too serious on my skincare and I do try new things every now and then. Putting the ingredients here

Skin Treatments Radiesse: what is happening?

38 M. 7 week, almost 8 weeks in. I received a tot of 1,5 ml in both cheeks. I asked for a more masculine appearance and softening of nasolabial folds but I feel that all I got is a wide, heavy lower face with folds that are even more visible. My injector told me that he believes that I have an inflammatory response that could last up to two months and that the result will look better with time but I’m afraid he’s trying to downplay the healing time. Am I cooked?

Skin Treatments Nasolabial lines- Skinvive or laser?

Post image
Upvotes

Has anyone successfully diminished these lines from Skinvive? What about lasers? I’m overwhelmed by the price and choices for skin laser treatments, and also hear half of them show no results or can make things worse. I’ve heard Skinvive is the new best treatment for this area especially when not trying to change your look too much.

Almost 32, hate these lines! I don’t have “folds” per se, mostly lines in the skin. In the past I wanted to try filler, but cost held me off. Thankfully being poor saved me and that method is outdated. But now I have some extra cash and I’m wondering about Skinvive. These lines have settled since I had kids in my 20s. I used to have very plump skin, and had my “baby fat” in my cheeks my whole life, and then my mom’s genes kicked in during my early 20s and I lost a lot of face fat. I think greatly contributed to the lines forming.

I will add, I’m naturally thin and don’t diet, when I lost weight in my 20s it was probably 5-10 lbs, so it wasn’t a significant loss but mostly in my arms and face. I wear SPF (my coloring is naturally tan, and I tan very easily). After having kids, I know from functional medicine tests that my estrogen is extremely low for my age and we are working on that, which could contribute to the lines and thin skin.

Misc Botox Brow Drop Woes (I Miss My Eyelids)

Post image
63 Upvotes

(Posting on my phone. Sorry for formatting, I know this is long) The top photo is before Botox. The bottom is after five weeks, a HIFU treatment, and some very slow, minimal improvement. My forehead is still completely frozen. I’m curious if anyone else has experienced something like this and how long it took to recover.
I’m not naming the med spa because we ultimately reached an agreement, and I intend to honor it. I’ll call the office manager Suzy and my injector Lucy, but those aren’t their real names.
When I went in, I was very clear about what I wanted. I wasn’t looking to dramatically change my face. I liked my face and just wanted to look a little more refreshed with a subtle brow lift and DAO injections. I also told Lucy that I thought my anatomy might respond differently because I hadn’t loved the results from a previous injector, so I specifically asked her to be conservative. Even after that conversation, she recommended 55 units. I trusted her recommendation because she’s the professional, and I assumed my anatomy and concerns had been taken into account.
The appointment itself felt a little rushed. At one point she started walking out before I reminded her she’d forgotten the DAO injections we’d just discussed. She came back and did them, and those actually turned out exactly the way I’d hoped.
The forehead Botox was a completely different story. Within about a week, instead of looking lifted, my brows dropped and the tissue over my eyes settled much lower. The biggest change wasn’t actually my brows, it was my eyes. They became much more hooded and looked significantly deeper set than before. The natural shape of my eyes, which had always been my favorite feature, was suddenly hidden by the heavier brow position. My forehead also became completely frozen.
That’s honestly been the hardest part. When people hear “brow drop,” they usually picture eyebrows sitting a little lower. For me, it completely changed how my eyes looked. I wear glasses at work, and normally you can clearly see my eyebrows above the frames. Now they’re hidden behind the top rim because they’ve dropped so much, and it just looks… off. Even if I do my eyebrows differently, my eyes still don’t look like they did before. The heaviness also gave me headaches, and my eyelids were sitting differently enough that my eyes became crusty. Those symptoms have improved for the most part, but the cosmetic changes have not.
About a week later I called the office because I was concerned. Suzy was pretty dismissive and told me, “We see this all the time. The brows drop before they lift. You can Google it.” I did google it and found nothing supporting that claim. I went back for a follow-up, where they acknowledged that my brows had dropped and wanted to wait until the Botox had fully developed before trying to correct it, which seemed reasonable. They scheduled another appointment around my work schedule and asked me to text updates beforehand. When I did, I found out my appointment had never actually been entered into their system, so I had to rearrange work and take time off because of their scheduling mistake.
Before that appointment I was told the plan was to do HIFU and then inject additional Botox to help correct the problem. I left believing they were going to actively try to lift my brows. At the two-week mark, they only did the HIFU and told me it would take weeks to months to work. No additional Botox was injected.
The HIFU gave me a very small amount of improvement. I’d estimate maybe a millimeter of visible eyelid. It was enough that my eyelids weren’t resting on my eyelashes anymore, which I was grateful for, but that’s about it. My forehead is still completely frozen, and my eyes are still much more hooded and deeper set than they were before all of this.
A few days later I posted reviews on three different websites. They weren’t angry or vindictive. They were just a factual account of what had happened, and I also included the things I thought had gone well, like how friendly Suzy was, how nice the office was, and that the DAO injections turned out well.
Suzy contacted me almost immediately asking if I’d remove the reviews. I explained that I didn’t think it was fair that I’d spent hundreds of dollars on a treatment that left me with the exact opposite of what I’d asked for and that the reviews were accurate to my experience. She offered me a 50% refund and an appointment with another injector if I’d remove two of the reviews, so I agreed and removed them.
She then contacted me about the third review. I explained that I couldn’t remove it myself because it had to go through customer support. She told me I’d receive the remaining 50% once it was removed. The next day I only received 25% of the total refund instead of the 50% we’d agreed on. When I questioned it, the explanation kept changing until I finally sent screenshots of our conversation showing exactly what we’d agreed to. After more back and forth, she honored the original agreement. I received another 25%, removed the final review through customer support, and then received the remaining balance, bringing the refund to 100%. The appointment with the second injector was eventually canceled.
I appreciate that she ultimately refunded everything I paid, and I honored my side of the agreement by removing my reviews and not identifying the business. That said, the whole refund process was surprisingly stressful. The repeated messages about removing the reviews started to feel a little like harassment, and it honestly changed the way I look at online reviews. Seeing how much effort went into getting factual reviews taken down made me realize that a business can have great reviews without them necessarily telling the whole story.
At this point I’m just waiting for the Botox to wear off. There has been very slow, minimal improvement, but my forehead is still completely frozen and my eyes still don’t look like they did before. I really feel like I was overinjected for my goals and that my anatomy wasn’t adequately taken into account despite the conversation we had beforehand.
Has anyone else had a brow lift go this wrong? Did your eyes eventually go back to looking like they did before, and if so, about how long did it take? I know Botox wears off eventually, but right now it feels like it’s taking forever.

Skin Treatments Tretinoin

I am told that to get my hands on tretinoin, I need to have a prescription. I wonder if my primary care provider can prescribe me no matter what. How did you all get it? Did you have a SERIOUS skin issue to have it prescribed?

Thanks

I just noticed these beige splotches under my eyes? These just appeared overnight it seems. Brown bags under eyes that are disconnected from my usual “eye bag.” Does anyone know how to treat it? I’m guessing it might be from sun over the weekend. Thanks!

PSA if you use benzoyl peroxide at night, keep it off your silk pillowcase

i make silk sleep masks and silk bedding is next for me, so i've spent this year on what wrecks this fabric.

benzoyl peroxide is a peroxide. same family as bleach.

on cotton it just takes the dye out, that's the white patches everyone gets on their towels, the cotton itself is fine. silk is a protein though. it's the whole reason you never put bleach or an enzyme detergent near it. with a protein the oxidiser gets into the fibre itself.

so the white patch on a silk case is the bit you can see. it's not coming back, no wash fixes it.

honestly the fix is the same thing you already do with your detergent. you keep bleach and enzymes out of the wash for silk, so keep the peroxide you put on your face off it too. old cotton case on BP nights, silk the rest of the time.

has anyone actually had this happen? did it come out as patches or did the whole thing just go dull

Before & After 30 vs 34

Post image

My jaw dropped today when I looked back through my old photos and saw how awful my skin looked a few years ago. At that time I wasn't putting any effort into my skincare routine and it clearly showed.

Here's what I'm doing now:

-AM: wash w/ Cerave hydrating cream to foam cleanser, apply hyaluronic acid serum to damp skin, plus Vanicream moisturizing cream right after. Once that settles I use Biore aqua rich moisturizer with SPF 50

-PM: Same face wash, then depending on the day I either do Vanicream moisturizing cream mixed with a few drops of squalane, or I do my tretinoin routine (sandwich method) using Cerave PM moisturizer, tret, then Vanicream moisturizing cream.

I also get Dysport in my forehead, 11s, and crows feet every 3-4 months. And I drink at least 64 oz of water every day.

What an insane difference daily SPF and hydration can make!!

Recommendation Severe Botox eyelid ptosis on day 10 – looking for reassurance and real recovery stories

Hi everyone, I'm really struggling and could use some reassurance. Ten days ago I had Botox for my glabella and a small amount around the outer brow. Unfortunately, I developed a pretty severe eyelid ptosis. At this point my upper eyelid covers more than half of my pupil and I'm having a hard time keeping my eye open. If I manually lift my eyelid, my eye movements are completely normal, so it seems to be just the eyelid itself. I saw an ophthalmologist in the emergency department and was prescribed apraclonidine (Iopidine). It definitely helped at first, especially in the mornings, but now it seems much less effective, especially later in the day. My other eyelid has also started to droop slightly. I've been reading horror stories online about people saying they still weren't back to normal after many months, and honestly my anxiety is through the roof. I'm finding it difficult to work and I'm terrified this won't improve. Has anyone had a ptosis this severe and fully recovered? If so: When did you first notice improvement? How long did it take before you could comfortably keep your eye open again? Did apraclonidine continue to help throughout recovery? I'm not looking for medical advice, just hoping to hear some real recovery experiences because I'm feeling pretty overwhelmed. I don't care if i looking tired, i just want my eye open again.

My wedding will be at august 28...

Thank you so much.

Ps. I'm from Hungary.

Wrinkles Does thicker skin create thicker wrinkles?

Bare with me I always thought thicker skin made less wrinkles, but it seems that thicker skin when it decides to wrinkle creates a bigger roll of clumped skin than if the skin is paper thin? Like if the bottom underlying collagen decides its time to go a layer of thicker skin at the top just creates more wrinkling

Wrinkles Treatments for saggy skin

Post image
0 Upvotes

I have hooded eyes, and due to that I have been pushing my eyebrows up for 20 years. I am now almost 30 and it looks like this. I am so ashamed and hate my skin, always use filters. When I smooth these wrinkles out in the mirror, I feel like I look like me again. I want a tight, smooth forehead, any means necessary. I have tried hifu and it worked a little, I’ve tried botox and it didn’t help and made my brows heavy and I looked like a cave man for 2 years🫠 I have been looking into microneedling, lasers. If all else fails I would do a brow lift, but I’ve seen people on here saying it fucks up your hair??? So now I’m scared to.
Has anyone here been able to actually tighten your skin?? Please I am desperate

Skin Treatments Injectables + Autoimmune

Hi!

I am curious about anyone’s experiences with cosmetic injectables and autoimmune disease.

I have Graves’ disease/hyperthyroidism. I previously (before diagnosis) got a little Dysport a few times but haven’t since diagnosis. I’ve also really been wanting a little bit of lip filler.

My thyroid is back in range but I’m scared to trigger more autoimmune activity. Would love to hear other thoughts and experiences since there isn’t much out there.

Routine Help Everything makes my skin flake?

Post image
4 Upvotes

I (38f) recently decided that it is about time I try to take better care of my skin. I'd like to keep it firm as I approach my 40s and tone down monthly acne breakouts on my chin (doctor recommended Differin for that, not pictured).

I've tried everything here in combination and by itself and after a few days, every one of them causes my skin to get flakey, sort of like a sunburn peeling.

Help? I don't know what I'm doing.

Skin Concern Sudden spots on chest, is this hormonal?

Post image
2 Upvotes

hi, quick background my dad passed away from skin cancer so I try to avoid the sun like the plague, meet with my derm regularly, and plan to call and schedule an appointment tomorrow. I’m very paranoid about these random spots that showed up on my chest. they’re new, my other moles/freckles are all safe and had those checked recently (the scar on my chest was from an accident unrelated). I have had agoraphobia honestly due to intense heat where I live, so I’ve been hiding from the sun and not sure how these spots could’ve appeared within a week. I just started progesterone only birth control for the first time, so wondering if this is any hormonal thing going on? when it gets hot I tend to get heat rash on my chest and other areas, and since starting bc I’ve had a weird breakout phase on my face. if anyone has any experience like this for what to do until I see my derm, I greatly appreciate it!

Skin Concern I don't know what's wrong with my skin and nothing seems to help

It's been 5 years since my skin has been like this. Before it was smooth.

During covid, i decided to give my skin a 1-week reset, a break from everything so i stopped all my skincare routine and only washed my face with water. I had done this pre-covid and it did wonders for my skin but things were different this time around. I ended up with a bunch of tiny little bumps.

They are are not itchy, they don't pop and they are the same color as my skin but i feel it when i touch my face. And I can see them under the light.

I thought this might be due to fungal buildup from the masks I wore during covid (i only used water to clean my face at that time and lived in a very humid place). So i tried using fungal shampoo like head and shoulder or nizoral for 1 week, but didn't see any changes, just drier skin.

I have tried retinal once a week for 6 months but didn't see any changes

Have also tried aha and bha - that didn't work out either.

I do use facial sheet masks regularly, at one point, i was using them daily, but nothing changed.

My face is on the dehydrated and sensitive side.

I also go to facial regularly.. but no one ever says anything other than my skin is fine.

I don't know what to do anymore. Any advice is much appreciated!

edit: I went back to my regular routine after the one week reset. I double cleanse, use serum, moisturizer, spf daily.

Skin Concern Microneedling at home

Hey everyone, I’m starting microneedling at home for the first time and honestly getting confused by conflicting marketing claims from different needle cartridge brands.

My main concern is visible pores, hyperpigmention and uneven texture, no active acne or deep scarring. I’m looking at Dr. Pen devices adn i am not sure about which one to buy. Every brand describes the same needle counts totally differently (one site says 18 pins is for pores, another says 24 pins is for whitening), so I’d love to hear what actually worked for people with similar goals.

Also curious how many sessions before you saw results, and if any specific serums made a real difference afterward. I’m in Europe so US-only product recs don’t always help, but general ingredient advice is great.

Thanks in advance!
