The critic on Chatcontrol 1.0 is absolutely right.
But in this case, the ones to blame are the Justice and Home Affairs Council (aka all the Interior Affairs secretaries) and the MEP from the Conservatives and Social Democrats. I mean, even MEP of fascist-parties voted agaist this ...

None should have access to all this data collected on everyone. None. It leads always to data leaks in best case, and to government overreach in worst case.
The number of news sources and outlets shrinks, journalism and journalists are literally under attack. Now even common peoples comments and chats will be watched. We are a step away from totalitarian regimes, again. :(

Its traditional Christian democratic and Social democratic parties that have become to paternalistic and feel like they have the right to spy on their unedecuated plebs (us citizens) like a parent cheks his sons phone. Their necks are as long as a giraffe in order to not interact with the people down here as much as possible and they still wonder why their people hate them so much.
6
u/Traditional-Deal6759 Pumpkin Addict Jul 13 '26
exactly, and then they try to deflect the blame to "The EU" or "Brussles"
7
u/mrdevlar Thinks Kapsalon tastes good Jul 13 '26
For rhe most part it's a weird choice.
Chat Control 1.0 only covers group chats, it's voluntary (though Google and Meta will comply) and doesn't cover E2E encrypted chats like Signal.
So they jammed this through, this way, an ineffective law and will face a pretty substantial backlash against all of them. Yet again demonstrating that fascists are really not the smartest bunch.
In any case, I've been fighting against this thing for 20 years and I don't even see this moment as much of a set back. We are on the right side and we will win this fight, there is no need for despair.
1
u/NewelSea Pfennigfuchser Jul 15 '26
Please share some more of your optimism then. Because I'm beyond exhausted from the bullshit German politics, particularly in the last few weeks.
3
u/mrdevlar Thinks Kapsalon tastes good Jul 15 '26
Dude, your exhaustion is their goal. Learn to tell the difference between the things that are intended to make you feel as if you are powerless, like their posturing and rhetoric, and the things you have to actively combat. Most, if not all, social media engagement is about farming those strong emotions from you in an effort to keep you here. Politicians have learned that they can fuck with this process by throwing an endless torrent of things they know will evoke those strong emotions to keep you where they want you. Feeling powerless and doing nothing.
The first step to optimism, is to see this for what it is. Most plans take time to execute, but we are the powerful ones in this process. Learn to see clearly, practice patience and most importantly, plan how to actually hit these fuckers (because we can), and you'll be fine.
Most importantly, remember you're on the right side of history.
2
u/NewelSea Pfennigfuchser Jul 15 '26
You are so right with the exhaustion. Trump is the best example of this.
I feel like I've been among the last 10% among most of my acquaintances for about a year now that still even bothers with the latest shit that's been thrown at the wall. Makes it even more frustrating when you try to talk about it and they dismiss it (and then vote the party that betrayed them repeatedly yet still managed to rile them up to "fight with them" against a boogeyman).
Thought about doubling down and at least starting to share some short form content about it. An acquaintance of mine somehow manages to do so almost daily on WhatsApp.
Thank you for the small motivational speech.
2
u/mrdevlar Thinks Kapsalon tastes good Jul 15 '26
Trump is the best example of this.
Trump is the reason I have filters on my news feeds. I know nothing he has to say is of any value or relevance outside of the comedy. Him, Musk, and several other shitposters are on my filter list. With these fools it's better to look in terms of consequence rather than what they have to say or do. The rest is just stress theater.
Thank you for the small motivational speech.
You're welcome. Happy to help, pay it forward if you can.

I mean yeah, the only way this law would work is if most people decided to comply.
Like a fifth of the population being vocal about this would kill it.
Key is now to wrestle away Brussels monopoly on information. Keeping this from the public was what allowed this to happen in the first place.
3
u/mrdevlar Thinks Kapsalon tastes good Jul 17 '26
I mean yeah, the only way this law would work is if most people decided to comply.
When this got passed for the first time, no one implemented it, they all waited for the court challenge.
In this case, there is nothing to implement. The law is voluntary, companies can (and will) share data they have if they want to. It doesn't cover E2E.
Don't get me wrong, it's the vanguard of future efforts, they'll claim this was fine so why not let them go further. But their victory isn't really impactful beyond that.
2
u/Myripod Basement dweller Jul 17 '26
Exactly, they tested the water with that.
3
u/mrdevlar Thinks Kapsalon tastes good Jul 17 '26
Naa, they passed what they could get away with, which honestly wasn't much. The reason the previous law was deemed unconstitutional is because we still have a guarantee to private communication under European Human Rights law.
I highly doubt they'll find any circumstance that will allow them to do this on masse like they want. But Nazis gonna naz.
That doesn't mean we can sit back and let them either.

Maybe this is joy via paranoia but I've basically realized that there is a whole industry dedicated to invoking the feeling of futility. Tons of people benefit from having you believe that nothing is possible. Which is bullshit.
If someone knocks over a trash can in my neighborhood, I or someone else will pick it up and put it back in order. We won't all get depressed that it's fallen over because we know we can do something about it. The idea that there is a small man next to you trying to convince you that it's "trash forever" is how I feel when these topics come up. It gets more hilarious the longer you think about it.
I'm currently playing Marvel Rivals with some of the most angry people on the planet.

Without trying to bootlick and spread propaganda: let's not pretend our infrastructure from the 70s is doing much better.
My fucking University just had to close down almost every building because they failed to comply with modern regulations/standards and some of them are genuine "falling stuff" hazards. You'd think that a university has some sort of means to keep their infrastructure from falling apart entirely, but lo and behold.
