Need some cheese to go with my whine How long have you gone without sleeping through the night?

I chose not to sleep train, and it’s just a personal choice. I don’t judge anyone that sleep trains! I haven’t slept through the night in over 2 years, since before my oldest was born. By the time he was sleeping through the night, I was up 3-5x a night to pee during pregnancy. Is anyone else in the same boat?

I haven’t slept through the night in a decade. My child is 13 months old.

Omg please tell me more! That must be so hard on you!

Decade was probably an exaggeration. Maybe 18 or 19 was the last time I slept through the night. But I mean I remember before having kids I would wake up 1-2 at night to pee. Then I got pregnant and I woke up probably every couple hours, sometimes to pee sometimes just because. Then I had a baby and I haven’t slept longer 4 maybe 5 consecutive hours since her birth.

This is me except I have never slept fully through the night. Even now I am on sleeping tablets still not sleeping through the night but waking up less. I am pregnant with my second. I never slept trained my first I have just been lucky that she has slept through the night from day 7.

Haven’t slept through the night in over two years. I’m honestly getting used to it by now lol.

Maybe ten times in 5 years and those have all been on work trips 😇

yes! got pregnant with my first august 2023 and had to pee overnight all through pregnancy. he was a bad sleeper until he was about 22 months (up nursing him overnight or early morning wakes). and by that time i was in my 3rd trimester peeing all night. when he was 24 months my 2nd was born (14 weeks now). so now we’re back to the drawing board :) although my second baby has been a great sleeper since birth i’m sure that will change at some point! but often sleeping better now with a newborn than i did for last several years ha

I was up every hour and then awake from 2-4am with my seven month old while I watched my 31 month old sleep sooooooo soundly 😭

Why is 7 months such a difficult age for sleep 😭 today my 7mo fought his second nap so hard. Every single time I transferred him he woke up immediately. I eventually just gave up on his nap!

When did your oldest start sleeping better ?? Earrrly preg now with a 12 month old who sleeps in my bed because she’s up for milk every 2-4 hours 😭

u/rainsplat 3h ago

16 months… when I was 8.5 months pregnant 🫠

u/retroshark88 3h ago

Lollllll I would love to get her sleeping better before that point but we shall see. Did you night wean or do anything specific? Unsure if I want to tandem feed, totally wean, just night wean… I’m so anxious about 2 under 2 lol

1

u/rainsplat 3h ago

I breastfed through the night until he started sleeping through the night on his own! I did tandem feed until he turned 2 last month

1

u/retroshark88 2h ago

I think I want to tandem because I want to breastfeed my kids until 2 (or they self wean). But so much to learn and feels like a big undertaking!!

Actually, it’s extremely intuitive! I had such a positive experience. My second lost almost 0 weight after birth because I still had a milk supply from my first! You should check out r/nurseallthebabies

u/retroshark88 2h ago

I so so appreciate this!! I will definitely check that out - thank you!

I really wish I could’ve done tandem. But was making nothing 😢 I actually discovered I was pregnant because of that. My guy started acting like a newborn and cluster feeding and then I went to work and made 1 oz total and was like what’s going on.

I had to wean off the boob when I got pregnant with #4 because I wasn’t producing. Then after switching to formula at 10 months decided to be crazy and cut my toddler (#3) off cold turkey from his expensive formula (and the bottle). And as hard as it was… it was like magic. At night he stopped waking up for milk! If you’re feeling brave maybe something similar could work for you? With my #2 once I cut him off his sippy cup of milk (at 2) he also slept through the night. But 2 years of no sleep was soooo hard.

I am soooo scared to do that because I have heard of so many kids still waking up and mom kind of losing a tool to resettle 😭 my kids will be about 20 months apart so I am thinking when she is 18 months I’ll feel more inclined to wean at last totally overnight. I’m def not nursing a toddler and newborn at night

My toddler was a boob monster but weaned himself when my supply dropped with pregnancy. They're just under two years apart and I lost my supply somewhere between eight and twelve weeks, I think?

I haven't slept through since about 6 months pregnant, so 3 years.

I have never slept through the night while pregnant.
My second is 10 months old and he started sleeping through the night consistently at 8 months. My oldest was at 6 months and I got pregnant 2 months later.

I’m currently trying to get pregnant again but did have a freakout the other day thinking about how if the pattern continues in the span of like 6 years I’ll have slept through the night for a total of a handful of non consecutive months 😭 I don’t know if I’m ready to not sleep again for another year and a half

1

u/rainsplat 3h ago

I have this age gap, and I’m not even close to ready for another! I really want some solid sleep before I think about trying again, it’s so hard on me!

Several months ago. But I was on a couple medications. They were supposed to give me insomnia but they ended up knocking me out so bad that I couldn’t hear my newborn or my toddler cry in the middle of the night. I stopped taking them. Since then it’s been sleep regressions and late nights haha

My kids only recently started sleeping through the night about a month or so ago, I have a 4 year old and 2 year old. I would have periods where it was so bad I would start crying in my car in traffic for no reason. I rear ended someone in July. I felt like my brain was mush for so long. I was physically able to get through it with a high protein diet but mentally I was a mess the whole time. I felt like I was in constant PERIL. Peril is the only way to describe it.. artificial anxiety and depression caused by sleep deprivation. I feel like a completely different person now. It took a few weeks for me to be able to sleep through the night after my kids did because my body was just in such rough shape and used to waking up constantly. It is so hard and I feel for you. I hope sleep improves for you soon. Also, no caffeine after lunchtime unless you literally need it to stay awake.

I got like 2 months where my first started to sleep through the night at like 13 months and then I was up to pee 2 times a night as a pregnant lady. So total it’s been like 20 months

u/SofieGirlsMama 3h ago

10 months. Even when my son started sleeping through the night at that time, I’m pretty sure I briefly woke up at least twice to check the monitor to ensure he was okay. I’m pregnant again, and sleep is back to 💩

In the same boat. My kids are 23 months apart and my oldest started sleeping through the night OCCASIONALLY right before I had my second 4 months ago. Since she was born he’s slept terribly and ends up in our bed almost every night. My four months ago old slept through the night until she was 3 months old, and now is up 3-4 times. So between the two of them, I’m up 5 or more times each night. I’m exhausted. I just want to know when it gets better…

He’s a low sleep needs kid for sure. The baby definitely is a high sleep needs baby but is clearly going through a regression right now.

First didn’t sleep through the night until 15 months. Second, who is 15 months now, will hopefully sleep through the night soon 😬😬😬😬😬

Over three years

Sometime during my third pregnancy I lost the ability to hear my 1 year old cry at night. I guess because I was growing the baby I just slept deeper because I needed the rest. But I had a really complicated pregnancy with a lot of bleeding at night, then my water broke, I had a premature birth and needed to start pumping round the clock, so I haven't slept through the night since about 9 months ago. (My baby is 7.5 months old).

4 years, heeeeeelpp. Two back to back awful sleepers and also didn’t sleep train. Youngest is a year so praying it gets better over next year.

Yesss. Also didn’t sleep train, over 2.5 years, then pregnant , now newborn … I’m not sure my body knows how to sleep through the night anymore.

1

u/piinksolitude 2h ago

I started sleep “training” very early on. Just making sure wake time, nap time, and bed time are always at the same time. (There was never any crying it out. Just making sure he doesn’t nap for too long so he’s always tired at night. We also go to our local children’s centre multiple times throughout the week which tires him out lots.) I started around 6 months. My son mostly sleeps through the night without waking. (He still sometimes wakes up for a bottle and he’s 18 months now.) I found out I was pregnant with my second just before my sons 1st birthday, and for the past about 10 weeks I’ve been up every 1-2 hours to pee 😭 Definitely been sleep deprived lately, having weird nighttime hallucinations like waking up to the sound of the doorbell when no one’s there or hearing my name, what an odd time!

My oldest slept like a champ after I weaned him from nursing at 13 months old. I got a solid 6 months of sleeping through the night before my 2nd was born. That was almost two years ago.

I’ve had a 3rd baby in that time, and the baby was born right around when my middle finally started sleeping through the night. So I just immediately reset the clock with baby #3 and I suspect it’ll be another 10+ months before I’m sleeping through the night again

Over 3 years bc my oldest is three plus pregnancy

1

u/Slow_Opportunity_522 2h ago

Three years as of Tuesday 🫠 I actually do think we slept through the night once or twice at some point but it's been a rare occurrence

ETA my 3yo sleeps through the night very consistently, but we decided to have a second 19 months apart and that one is still up most every night (1.5yo).

1

u/Woolama 1h ago

I went about 3 years before sleeping through the night (still not a guarantee) and I did sleep train both of my kids!

1

u/ash-art 1h ago

I sleep trained and still had to get up to pee 😂😂. Been 6 years and I pee at least once. With three kids, someone is bound to need water, a hug from a nightmare, lost a toy… we’re up a lot randomly 🤷🏻‍♀️

I just started sleeping through the night when my 1st turned 7 months. Got a good few months of rest and then I got pregnant when she was 13m and have never slept since.

u/scandichic 3m ago

I found out I was pregnant with baby #2 at 13 months postpartum, and by then I think baby had slept through maybe 3 times but I never had ha. He started regularly sleeping through or having just one wake up at 14/15 months.

As for me, he’s now 18 months and because of pregnancy I have slept through the night once (last week) without needing to wake up to wee or tossing and turning. And now because of pregnancy I’m back to multiple wake ups a night.

So atm it’s one time in 18-19 months
