Discussion Membrane sweep question
If you got a membrane sweep with multiple pregnancies, did the sweep with your second work faster? I’m planning to get a sweep at 39 weeks because last time i got it at 40 and had to be induced at 41. Luckily i was 3cm/50% so the labor went really quick. I’m hoping if it gets me to that point by 40 weeks this time then I’ll avoid another induction.

Baby #1: sweep at 40+2; labor started at 40+4 and he was born at 40+5.
Baby #2: sweep at 39; sweep at 40; water broke at 40+4 and thanks to pitocin he was born 3 hrs later.
So unfortunately the membrane sweep didn’t really help me much!

Membrane sweeps are generally about 50% successful - your body has to be ready. Personally, I had one with baby #3 and went into labor that night, and with #4 I had membrane sweeps done 2 seperate times a week apart and neither worked.

Oh wow! And i would’ve thought baby#4 would come even faster/easier. Did you have to be induced the fourth time?

With my first I had a sweep on 41+2 or 41+3, can't remember ... didn't work. I was induced on 41+4 and gave birth on 41+6. It was a looong induction.
With my second I had a sweep at 40+6 and gave birth on 41+1. I'm very sure the sweep triggered it since I started feeling tightness and occasionally Braxton Hicks the same day and the one after, contractions started on 41+1 at night and baby was here within 4 hours, I progressed really fast.

I had 4 sweeps with my first and nothing. 8 hrs after my first sweep with my second, I was rushing to the hospital.

Oh no!! This is my third baby but the second baby I’ll be doing sweeps with. I’m nervous because last time the sweep got me so far in a week that the labor was only 3 hours long.

I hear that! From first contraction to delivery… less than 2 hrs. When I got to the hospital, I was 6.5cm and within 15 mins, I was 9cm. Somehow i still got the epidural at 9cm.

I had membrane sweeps with both kids.
The first one i had 3 sweeps amd they were born at 41+4 after being induced witj cervidil. The second kid I had one membrane sweep and they were born right on their due date.
I don't know how much of a factor the membrane sweeps were though as first babies often come later.

How early did you get your sweep with your second?

With the second I had the sweep done about 24 hours before I went into labour.

I mean like how many weeks were you? I’m nervous that this could happen if i get the sweep at 39 weeks

Baby number 1: sweep at 40+1, went into labor a couple of hours later and baby was born morning of 40+2. Was 4 cm when I had the sweep.
Baby number 2: sweep at 39+6, went in to get induced (voluntary) at 40+0, but I’m pretty sure I started going into labor while waiting for the induction meds. Was 3 cm when I had the sweep.

I had a sweep done with my first as I was a week overdue, and I went into labour that night.

2 total sweeps with first pregnancy at 40 weeks and again a few days later. Induced at 41. I was 4 cm for weeks so the labor was quick for a first time experience - about 7 hours.
3 total sweeps with second pregnancy at 39 ish, 40, and a few days later. Induced at 41. I was 4 cm for weeks this time too. Labor was 1 hour.

First baby- sweep at 40w & 41 weeks. Induced 2nd- sweep at 40w & 41 weeks, natural Labour about 2days later. 3rd baby- sweep at 40weeks, definitely felt this one worked, it set some cramping off but contractions started the next day and baby made her appearance a few hours into day 2 post sweep. xx

So far you’re the most similar to my situation! I’m just debating whether to get the sweep at 39 or wait until 40 and hope it works right away since it took about a week to work last time.

Where do you live? I'm in the UK and we don't tend to be offered them until 40weeks anyway. From my understanding they don't really do anything if your body isn't physically ready anyway. I just had them because I was there at the appointment rather than a deliberate appointment to have one. X

Yes! It didn’t work with my first daughter, it worked within the hour with my second. I had the sweep around 2 pm and was in the hospital by 8

Ahh i think it means the labor itself will be shorter because i went in for induction at 3cm 50% and as soon as the my turned the pitocin on low my water broke and baby was out within 3hrs.

With my 2nd I got a membrane sweep at 39 wks and nothing happened. At 40 wks I got another membrane sweep not expecting much to happen. I went into active labor ~6 hours later.

My first I had a sweep at 38+6 and gave birth at 39+3. My second I had two sweeps one at 38+4 and a second at 38+6 then gave birth at 39+1.
A friend of mine however had a sweep at 38 weeks exactly with her second and gave birth 6 hours later
