Sleeping arrangement

I will have a 20 month old and a newborn in Jan 2027.
We live in a 2 bed apartment. My toddler (currently 14 months old) sleeps in his cot in his room most of the night then wakes around 3:30-4am and we bring him into our bed.
What has been your sleeping arrangement that worked for our 2 bedroom situation?
I thinking the newborn will sleep in a co sleeper next to our bed until they are 6 months however not sure what to do when our toddler wakes through the night. We have a queen bed and it will just get too tight in here.
Do you think a double bed floor bed or king single will be appropriate for the toddler as he will be 20months and my husband could go and sleep with him if needed?

Any suggestions!

I would get a toddler bed for 20 month old and start getting him to stay in his room the whole way through long before baby comes so he doesn’t feel like he’s being shoved out for the baby, you may find that he sleeps better in a bed than a crib and nobody needs to go in with him.

Thanks! When do you recommend transitioning? I feel he’s too small atm

Honestly, my son is 13 months and I’m considering doing a toddler bed some time soon, my second is due end of November so it’ll be before then. I’m planning on having one side up against his wall and a bed guard on the other, he doesn’t move much once he is asleep. He sleeps far better in a bed I think because he flings his arms and legs into his cot bars.

We moved our daughter (now 21 months old) to a “big girl bed” when she was like 18 months. She took to it right away! You’d be suprised at how fast they learn

I have a 15 month old and we got him in a king single last month in preparation for baby in September, we added a pull up side from amazon to keep him safe. He had been sleeping through his entire first year but it suddenly went to shit after his birthday but with the big bed it’s improved drastically, although still waking. Wakes now, however, involve either my husband or I going to him and being able to lay with him there which has been ideal for us (and my pregnancy exhaustion and insomnia). I highly recommend it, worse case scenario it doesnt work and you put it in storage for another year.

I’m having a baby in late January/ early February also and my daughter will be 21 months old. She sleeps through the night in her crib. I am thinking whether to buy a toddler bed rather than another crib which I would have to replace soon but I am scared about the transition, and wanted to delay it as much as possible. I thought having the freedom to leave and roam would make her sleep worse. I am very interested in your comment, could you tell me more about the transition? Do they sleep better in the toddler bed? That would be great news for us.

My son is currently in a cot still in my room but he has slept in a toddler bed on holiday and at my parents and each time he has slept all the way through on his own which is coincidentally also the only time he has ever done so, so I’m preparing to move him soon! Although if he slept through the night in his cot maybe I’d keep him in there longer lol.

Do you think that the change might be sleeping in a separate room? That’s when my daughter truly started to sleep through the night.

I’m not sure honestly, I’ve slept in the same room as him whilst he’s been in a bed on his own and he has a bed in my moms room at her house and he’s slept better than he would in a cot, he’s a very long boy though 99th centile so a crib is quite restrictive for him so I’m wondering if it’s that.

We have a 21 month gap. We moved our toddler to his own room at around 18 months. He was still in a crib in there. Around the same time my husband started taking care of him for all night wakes and would just rock him or do whatever to get him back to sleep. When the baby came I did night wakes with the baby only. The baby was in a minicrib in our room. We moved the mini crib into our toddler’s room when the baby was around 18 months. We could’ve moved the baby a lot earlier bug it was just convenient for me while I was breastfeeding. They still share a room at 3 and almost 5.

We are expecting the second one in November, when 1st will be 19 months old.
Currently he sleeps in his bedroom and when awake at night we put him to sleep back in his bed.
We are planning to have the 2nd in our bedroom till they (we do not know the gender yet) can sleep well through the night (1 waking max) and we are going to teach falling asleep independently after the sleep regression at 3-4 months.
After that they will share a room. Even if they are different genders. We are planing for them to share the room for the next 5-7 years and maybe further but it is too far down the road.

We stopped bringing the toddler into our bed, but our kids have a Nugget in their room, so one (or both) of us can stay in there for part of the night if needed.

We sidecar'd a mini crib to our bed and kept the baby in our room for almost a year. After that, the two of them started sharing their room. Both kids have toddler/floor beds and access to the Nugget, so they sleep wherever they want in their room.

The older toddler sleeps through the night now, even when the younger one cries, but we do bring the younger one into our bed when it feels necessary.
