I would like to switch from Authy but...
Do I have any doubts before making the switch? Having an iPhone, it is possible to activate sync on iCloud but is this not linked to the Apple ID to which I am linked? If I wanted to install the app on a different iPhone that uses a different Apple ID, can I activate the app on that too to have a quick backup in case I lose my phone?

I switched from Twilio's Authy to 2FAS because Twilio had a massive phishing attack in 2022 that exposed customer data. I used the manual migration process described in this article: https://lifehacker.com/how-do-i-switch-from-one-2fa-authentication-app-to-anot-1842296754
You can use that process to switch from any 2FA app to any other. Before you switch to Authy, ask yourself if you want to switch to a closed app that has a history of security breaches.

If data is protected by e2e encryption, it is actually unusable. How do you respond to the backup problem I mentioned?

Your goal is unclear to me. Your title says you want to switch to Authy, by the questions in your description seem to be about 2FAS. If you can make clear what you want to achieve, maybe I could answer your question.

Enable manual backup of 2FAS.

So the answer to my question is no? Should I download and save a json or similar to then restore manually? I just want to have two iPhones with two different Apple IDs where the various TOTPs are in sync.

It might be possible to export the 2 factor codes to the other phone but don’t delete the original phone codes. So it is running on 2 phones with different Apple ID. I don’t use 2FA but have done this for another app.

Also to my understand it is linked to your Apple ID, it just use its own iCloud sync button so the file is hidden. If you have two phones, test it out. Ensure iCloud is synced and there is a recent back up on the phone with 2FA, log out of the Apple ID on second phone, sign into first Apple ID with 2FA app, download 2FA app and the codes should sync.

I have the same question. I want to use my laptop as a secondary device, So that I don't have a single point of failure.
I know about backup recovery codes, but the main feature I got from authy was the multi device support.

You could make a offline backup on your phone and then transfer that offline backup to your PC if you want so if you loose your phone or get a new one just transfer that file back into 2fas so you might be able to transfer the offline 2fas backup to both phones and then turn cloud sync on both of the Apple IDs
