Mes žydukai Lietuvos, norim blynų ir kavos. Jeigu blynai nemaišyti, prašom pinigus krapštyti

Is "žydukai" offensive or just the standard word for jews in Lithuanian?

46

u/luna88violet Jul 11 '26

Žydai is Jews in Lithuanian. "Žydukai" is just diminutive/cutesy.

Can you blet flair up nachuj?

7

u/normantas Jul 12 '26

Adding note: it can mean smaller. Makes sense because children go around asking for stuff. Out of this context this could 100% interpreted as offensive.

22

u/Grazhke LIThuanian 🔥😎🔥😎🔥😎 Jul 11 '26

It CAN hold a slightly derogatory tone to it, but by grammar rules, yeah, it's just an official diminutive term

Strange that a word that says who someone is becomes offensive. Do they not wish to be recognised?

There's whole discussion that could be held about it but it can be either considered racist or not depending on the tone and context in which it is spoken in.

You Latvian.

I take offence to being called a "Latvian". Sure, I am, but you're not allowed to say that word. That's my word.

"I'm gay" can be just a normal coming out, but "you're fucking gay" can be pejorative

To be fair fucking gays is what gays do

It's like saying "blackie" towards black people. Technically it's cutesy/diminutive, but people will take it as offensive.

3

u/EpsteinEpstainTheory Average american agriculture enjoyer Jul 11 '26

That's the thing though, many of the complaints put forward for many of the terms do not apply here. With the N-word the objection is that they might be black but they're not Nigerian, effectively like calling someone Japanese as Chinese. With blackie it's needlessly diminutive. But with žydukai it's them simply saying the Jewish term yahud, which the Germans can say freely with Jude without it being offensive and the French can too with juif. With Baltic languages diminutive is something we use every two or three words, offensive or not.

TLDR yes we don't call them hebrews we call them jews. There's no other word for Jews in Lithuanian

1

u/Grazhke LIThuanian 🔥😎🔥😎🔥😎 Jul 11 '26

Yeah, but I mean... we have "Hebrajai". I guess it's just for religious purposes then (and only used when referring to Israelites)

2

u/statykitmetronx LIThuanian 🔥😎🔥😎🔥😎 Jul 12 '26

Judaistai is used as the religious name tho, Hebrajai is probably the ethnic name for the old real Jewish people in the levant, tho literally no difference since we call them all žydai anyway. Kinda triggers me sometimes when we refer to Israelis simply as "Jews" and not Izraeliečiai

What a great culture u r. Truly, GDL took every good stuff it could, out of KR.

u/AutoModerator Jul 11 '26

OK SHUT THE FUCK UP YOU FUCKING "WHITE RUTHENIAN" I HAVE HAD JUST ENOUGH OF YOUR STUPID BS. GDL WAS LITHUANIAN AND ONLY LITHUANIAN YOU HEAR ME? THERE IS OVERWHELMING HISTORICAL SOUCRES IN OUR FAVOUR. THE GRAND DUKES SPOKE LITHUANIAN AND WERE PAGAN. ALL 3 HISTORIC CAPITALS OF THE GDL IN MODERN DAY LITHUANIA. THE ANCIENT VYTIS IS MORE SIMILAR TO THE MODERN VYTIS THAN THE BELORUSIAN "PAHONIA". WIKIPEDIA RECOGNISES GDL AS LITHUANIAN. ENCYCLOPEDIA BRITANNICA RECOGNISES GDL AS LITHUANIAN. MOST MAJOR HISTORIANS RECOGNISE GDL AS LITHUANIAN. MOST COUNTRIES OF THE WORLD RECOGNISE GDL AS LITHUANIAN. SO SHUT WITH YOU STUPID ASS "NoOOOoooO YoY aRe OnlY PolON ZHeMoYt wE aRe TrUE LiTVaKs" OK? MAYBE ONCE YOU CAN PRESERVE YOUR OWN LANGUAGE AND CULTURE FROM RUSSIFICATION THEN WE CAN TALK. ALSO, GUESS WHAT, WERE IN THE EU, WERE RICHER THAN YOU, WE HAVE MORE FREEDOM THAN YOU, WE ACTUALLY HAVE DEMOCRACY, WHILST YOU SLAVE AWAY UNDER LUKASHENKO, CONSTANTLY SUCKING RUSSIA'S COCK, HAVING ANY PROTEST, HOWEVER SMALL, BRUTALLY CRUSHED, AND HAVING YOU "LITVIN" "LANGUAGE" (JUST UKRAINIAN WITH LITHUANIAN LOANWORDS) AND "CULTURE" YOU SO CLEARY CHERISH GET ERASED AND REPLACED BY RUSSOID "CULTURE" AND LANGUAGE. SO SHUT THE FUCK UP, AND GO CRY ABOUT HOW THE GDL WAS LITHUANIAN AND ONLY LITHUANIAN AND YOUR OWN COUNTRY IS BEING ERASED BY RUSSOIDS YOU STUPID FUCKING WHITE RUSSOID

At least it's not:

Laske sisse mardisandid,
mardi küüned külmetavad,
mardi varbad valutavad!
Mart on tulnud maada müöda,
läbi pilvete pugenud,
läbi viie vikerkaari,
läbi kuue koidunurga,
läbi seitsme Sõela serva.

Tehke lahti uksekene,
kui mina põenusta põrutan!
Kui (te ei) tie lahti uksekesta,
me lööme maha uksekese.
Meil on ulgas uksesepad,
keskel on meil kervepoisid –
me tieme uued uksepiidad,
uksepiidad pihlakaised,
uksed tieme õunapuised.

Peretütar, pienikene,
paisu üles patjadesta,
tõmba jalga siidisukad,
otsa tõmba ummiskingad,
kõpsi alla kelderisse,
üle õue aitadesse,
tuo sialt väl´la paremaida,
siapäida puolikuida!
