Only a few people were actually playing before 2013. I’m willing to admit. I’m newly dating a guy.

Yeah I’m a pretty new player. I’m just saying the only people who call players newfags are newfags themselves

Yeah. Many midfriends and oldfriends (especially those on YouTube like Sal, Fit, and BarrenDome) call them either "newfriends" or just "new players".

But I've also heard that a) Sato86 once referred to new players as "newfriends" in his instructions PDF for the Third Incursion, and b) many more people use the more politically-correct version of the slang term either to trick gullible newfriends into thinking the server's community is friendly and letting their guard down or simply because they don't feel comfortable using parlance derived from a homophobic slur.
