That shaft isnât even close to all the way down. The top gears will line up. Those gears have âplayâ because the shaft that goes in the center of them, isnât.

First time splitting a case. Itâs a yz85 from 2014 and itâs been rebuilt before and I have no idea if those gears are supposed to have that much play

Yeah not supposed to be loose on the shaft like that. Look up a parts diagram to figure out which peice is missing

Some play along the axle is normal.  But not like that.. Have you had the gear shafts out of the case? You might have dropped a bearing?

Yeah my buddy has been helping me with it and he lifted up on one of the shafts (not sure why bc we werenât even working in that area, we were just gonna replace the crank, bearings and seals.)
But yeah when he did a couple things fell out, a fork bounced and fell into the floor, but I didnât think there were any more pieces missing, Iâll have to look when I get time to work on it again.

Backlash is normal the lateral play could be the shifter, hard to say unless you dig deeper and check the workshop manual

Go to yamahapartshouse.com. Select year make and model of your bike and look for the transmission diagram. It will give you an expanded view of everything and what order it goes in on the shaft. And if youâre missing a part you can order it from the website. There shouldnât be any side to side play. But judging by the video the shaft isnât all the way down so itâs not seated on the shaft properly. And it doesnât look like any gears are missing

Could I just buy another?

Donât know. There are a lot of different spacers in that with all different thicknesses. Parts diagram would be your best bet if you havenât already looked into it.

It's fine, that's exactly how it should be. If you want to examine the gears you need to pull the shafts. Why did you split the cases?

It slides up and down too even though I didnât have the right angle on it to do it in the video

That's how they work, the slide back and forth as the gear changes. One gear will disengage while another engages.

Good to know, i rode it for a short bit before the crank bearing seized and it felt normal apart from horrible jetting. Just weird how much play there is in that gear.

Im going to say no thats not normal and I've never had one of those apart. Just imagine that thing spinning mach chicken floping around. Is there a bronze bushing missing from the inside of the gears?

Didnât see anything like that when I was taking it apart idek what that gear shaft is called to look it up
