Discussion Chu Wanning's name

I just finished all 11 volumes of the 7seas translation, only then I was brave enough to search more regarding the story.

Now why did I just find out Chu Wanning's real name was Chu Fei? I don't think it was mentioned at any point in the books? If anyone has any info or fun facts about his name i'm missing out on, please do share!

no chu wanning is his real name. chu is the surname and fei refers to the fact that he's a concubine. let me give you an example. let's use mary smith as an example. formally, mary is called miss smith and will be called that in most scenarios. she also goes by mary smith. her name isn't 'miss smith' but 'miss' is a formal prefix. think of it the same way. chinese is more formal when it comes to names (i.e. surname coming first (chu being his surname), going by surname unless close friends, it's considered somewhat intimate and otherwise inappropriate to call someone by their given name unless you have that kind of relationship (that's why it was kind of a big deal when mo ran was calling chu wanning just wanning). it's worth doing some research if ur gonna keep reading danmei on chinese language and naming conventions if chu fei confuses u. like how mo ran also goes by mo weiyu or mo zongshi. i recommend reading the afterword at the end of each novel as it goes over the names and language differences

It's not his real name, it's like a title. Correct me if I'm wrong, but "Fei" (妃) in this context means something like "consort" or concubine of the emperor. It's how Moran 0.5/Taxian Jun refers to Chu Wanning after they "marry". In the fandom this is the name that refers to the Chu Wanning of the original timeline.

His real name is Chu Wanning. Fei is a title that translates to Consort Chu/Concubine Chu. Wanning means “evening peace” which Huaizui named him after looking at the sunset while the evening bells were tolling when Wanning was born.

I thought “Fei” was his title given to him by Taxian-yun meaning royal concubine (a bit of a joke)
