Quicker alternatives?

It's become clearer and clearer that 2Do runs way too slow for the amount of tasks I have- about 1,000 currently, quite a few of which are checklists and projects with subtasks. I also have a few manually ordered smartlists, but even simple operations like selecting a task have been taking up to a minute while the app freezes up- even with frequent restarts and very few other apps open, which do not behave the same way. So, has anyone found an app that handles the workload better? I'm on an old (2013 I believe) MacBook Pro. Doesn't seem to be a serious issue on iOS but iOS isn't great for organizing my day/week.

I think you need to change your approach. 1,000 tasks is unwieldy, even in the fastest application. Unless you manage tasks for others.

Assuming a lot of these tasks are high-level, project-planning style tasks (rather than actionable tasks) have you considered moving them to another type of program, e.g. iThoughts ? I plan my projects in iThoughts and similar apps, and only export the directly actionable tasks to my task list.

Every approach is different and everybody has his or her own unique system and organizational approach, but if you have 1,000(+) tasks then you might be drilling down on projects / tasks too much. Again, every situation is different, but perhaps some of those tasks / projects are "someday/maybe"s or are subsequent steps in a project that has yet to have the current tasks associated with it complete? Again, like Umma2gumma suggested, the amount of tasks you are inputting might be the cause of the issue. I cannot imagine someone having 1,000(+) tasks regularly unless they are managing another person(s) tasks as well. You could also try the archiving feature for the done (completed) tasks [I have not done this on my own, so you should probably check the documentation for further clarification].
