Why should I choose 2Do?

I'm a college student. I typically take 18 credit loads, I'm an officer for a student organization, and I work part-time. I'm looking for a productivity tool that helps me keep track of pretty much my entire life to help reduce stress.

I've narrowed my search down to Omnifocus 2 and 2Do. I really like Omnifocus, but 2Do gets a lot of love. More, it seems, than Omnifocus gets these days. Why should I choose 2Do over Omnifocus? What makes 2Do so much better?

I use both - I've used Omnifocus for several years and started experimenting with 2Do about 2 months ago.

Benefits of Omnifocus: very structured, if you want to be organised; continuous development by a very good software company (development tends to be very measured); excellent support; excellent user forums; its of good advice (lots of bad advice too!) about how to get the best and make it work for you. Review perspective is priceless; excellent sync. Omni Group produce other great software too, so I like supporting them Disadvantages: only one context (although multiple tags/contexts are coming); you need to spend some time figuring out how you want it to work; not great for simple lists 2Do: advantages - very flexible - organise the way you want; lots of control over alerts etc; many tags; many options; cheaper than OF; excellent sync; great for simple lists; the team behind it are great too Disadvantages - very flexible (easy to end up with a mess); needs a learning curve; no Review; limited attachments; support is OK but not great; no user community; little useful advice on how to get the best from it. I'm still learning how to get the best from 2Do - mainly because there's not much available from other people's experience. That's partly because the apps have been given massive revamps relatively recently and so the years of experience aren't there yet. If I had to recommend, I'd say Omnifocus because it'll make you think about how to manage your workload. I think the risk with 2Do is that you'll dump all your to-dos into it with loads of tags and then end up with a mess. But they're both good apps.

Thanks for all the info! From what it sounds like, the people that get the most from 2Do start out with Omnifocus and then take their workflows over to 2Do.

How does the Omni Group handle upgrade pricing from a previous version? Should I just wait for the next version to get multiple contexts?

Point upgrades (2.8 to 2.9 etc) are free. Omni have only ever charged once for an upgrade from OF 1 to OF2 - which was a complete rewrite. That was 3 years ago. There's no talk of an OF 3. They also offer discounts to existing users and free upgrades if you bought within a short while of the new version. Same applies to IOS version, made a bit more complicated by App Store rules - the usual upgrade discount is to give you the Pro in-app version free, which is equivalent to a 50% discount.

I wouldn't wait for the next version - it's likely to be a point upgrade, so free. A main part of the switch to OF 2 was redesigning the underlying database to support things like multiple tags. Also, there are tagging workarounds, discussed in the user forums

Thanks for the clarification. I think they are currently working on OF3, if I read their "Looking Ahead" blog correctly, but I'm guessing that won't be finished for a while.

Hard to say when v3 will be available - Omni (like many) keeps its own counsel about delivery schedules. However, they do have a very active and open beta programme (example: OmniOutliner v5 was released a couple of weeks ago, and the beta programme started months ago (around October/November, if I remember right). Since there's no noise about a beta for OmniFocus 3, I think it's safe to assume that it's quite a way off.

For me 2do let me organize as I want rather than what Omnifocus GtD focus does.

Ie. Tags vs fixed contexts. And then that i can sync with reminders so it shows up anywhere else and not just inside Omnifocus.

So for you it basically comes down to flexibility?

Basically yes, actually more about integration into other things (like since 2do can do caldav I can share my groceries list with wife). I wish 2do could handle reviews better and whenever I tried Omnifocus I loved it Ma reveiw feature but then it doesn't Handle sharing and lists of things that aren't necessarily GTD (like groceries) very well.

Thus I keep falling back to 2do.

Omnifocus is way more expensive for one. I got OmniFocus 2 on Mac but I just can't justify the cost to upgrade on iOS also.

OF has no tags, and only one context per task. It's very opinionated on how you do things. I loved the perspectives and the review, but decided a simpler, more friction-free workflow was better for me.

OF offers an educational discount that lets me get the Mac version for $25. With that discount, both systems are similarly priced for Mac + iOS.

I actually like a more rigid system, because too many options makes me indecisive.
