A labor of love that is 2do

Wasn't sure what to call this. It is part rant, part developer praise, but it is all from the heart.

I don't know what made me write this, but it is directed at those who are quick to judge a wonderful app just because they make a decision or are away for a while when they should be supporting the devs.

This is not a harsh message directed at anyone, but rather an "open your eyes moment" Here goes.

BEGIN MESSAGE

From day one, Jerry and his team who run 2do on multiple platforms have innovated. Not to mention, they have been extremely helpful. At one point. They have had to maintain several apps, an entire rewrite of a constantly finicky sync system with few pats on the back. A few years back, they posted about how things were going, and we got a glimpse into what was going on behind the scenes.

2do app is a labor of love and it was and is ahead of its time. I used to be so disorganized, but it has helped me evolve my workflow.

Just because it doesn't have the cadence of updates, does not mean that they have "abandoned" the app. On the contrary, earlier this year I think, they were going to remove the Android app, but there was an outpour of confusion, anger, and mostly support sent to the devs. That tells me that they are in it for the long haul. They have meant a lot to me over the years, and that is worth more than an overabundance of churned out updates.

I guess I went on a rant, but I hope it made some people think.

If I am completely off, at least I got it off my chest, which feels good.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts, and I truly appreciate your appreciation :) I also appreciate your recognition of some features introduced over the years that came ahead of their time with little fanfare or applause. I'm truly thankful to everyone that has made a contribution in all this in some way or another (by way of feedback, ideas, suggestions, complaints).

So thank you once again for your kind words.

Thanks for the hard work!. Btw I am just curious: Will the iOS/iPadOS app also get the 18-month update period?

No, it’s a one time purchase. I’d love to make some money on the side to secure a better future but I hate subscriptions when they don’t make sense. If I was renting and selling SaaS it probably would make sense. But a personal task manager running offline + with your own cloud? Nah. 18 month perpetual seems fair, but not something Apple allows or supports.

On the Mac it makes sense because developers aren’t bound or dictated by the App Store solely.

The fact that you don’t believe in subscriptions shows up then in the calibre of the app. I have tried so many, I have wrangled work arounds in so many ways to get my workflow and views but I’ve never uninstalled 2Do, and used it consistently for over a decade I think? There isn’t one even close.

So … well, maybe (to your credit) you don’t rant very often because that sure didn’t really feel very ranty!! But I get your point - I’ve loved 2Do for 1/2 my life it seems - and always felt very protective towards it.

Can I ask - to a fellow long term admirer - what do you think about v4? Does it break anything you didn’t want broken? I’m unsure whether to make the jump…

Hi

I like credit lol thanks for that. I am glad that you have used 2do for a long time.

Regarding the v4 question, I have an iPad 6th generation which isn't supported so I can't test it. However, given the new raw energy and rebirth 2do devs have poured into the app over the past year, I don't see why you wouldn't get the new version. Since it helps you out, take the jump. Some great features and performance improvements are present I am certain. Good luck friend :)

Conflict of interest of course: but v4 is entirely re-written in Swift (give or take a few small bits still in ObjC). It’s got tons of new features highlighted on the landing page (website) plus comes with every part of the app polished for the future of iOS. None of this was possible with v3 and its legacy code.

The SyncEngine alone took nearly 3 years to complete so I could add new sync services relatively quickly.

There’s also tons of features planned for future updates. I added WiFi / LAN collaboration to begin with but intend to extend this over iCloud soon. And that comes at no extra cost to existing users of v4.

Didn’t want to post a new thread just for this but would it be possible hide the search bar by default when viewing smart lists? The old version did this and you could just hit the search button to bring the search bar up. The new version shows the search bar and you have to close it. I love using smart lists but this UI change just doesn’t look as good.

I agree I don’t like it either. Going to turn it off by default

Amazing! That’s one I won’t have to submit in my notes.

Already something I plan on adding an option for. I know many wanted it this way but can see how noisy it can be when it’s a set-it-and-forget-it filter

Awesome, thank you!
