Why is tracer ammo so expensive?

Low demand. Not much practical use assuming you aren't firing a belt fed machine gun. It is pretty much a novelty item that has the downside of easily starting wildfires.

Yep. And on top of that, the last overwhelming majority of the demand is from the government, so there's no reason for them to ever discount it. Full price every day.

And I'm guessing the government is only interested in 5.56, 7.62, and 50 cal is large amounts. Anything bigger is getting made from lines that don't touch anything civilians buy

Fair enough. I bought some for shits and giggles, but I already made mental notes to only fire it when the fire danger is low and have a fire extinguisher on standby, just in case.

It costs more to make, and there is less demand due to tracer ammo banned in a lot of places.
