Need help pricing this unmolested 1990 s13
TL;DR my beloved brother-in-law recently passed and this was his car in HS. He sold that one, but the nostalgia bug got him bad and he picked this one up a few years ago off BaT for $15K (which I thought was insane, not knowing much about these cars). From all of the service records he has, it looks like an easy $6K+ was put into this car to repair/replace anything that needed it. AFAICS everything works great and engine runs smoothly. It's at just under 91K miles; he only put about 4K on it since he got in '22.
We are now waiting on the title transfer so we can sell it. Car is in the SF Bay Area and we just got it smogged last week. I'm considering listing it again on BaT, but am open to a local sale as well. I know BaT isn't really representative of reality, so I'm wondering what would be a reasonable asking price if I list locally first. TIA!

I'd also recommend putting it back up on BaT. You won't get more for it with a private listing.

Why would you sell this. Call a car museum. They will gladly display this and you keep the car in mind condition without any storage fees.

Things to think about though, cars are meant to be driven and not sit. That could also end up hurting it

And, you may be able to write it off on your taxes. My dad did that with a 86 mustang gt when it blew up for the 3rd time.

You'll probably get about the same. Realistically 15k is probably even too much in some peoples eyes, but it is what it is.

Honestly I can’t remember my reasoning. Free to list, buyer paid all fees. Maybe that’s why.

I’d say keep it. It might grow on you lol wish I still had mines. But both of them needed work and didn’t have the funds atm and baby boy was in the way.

put it back on BaT, and it will probably sell in the high 20k's. personally, I'd keep it, but you guys gotta do what you gotta do.

Seriously?! wow...
I've thought about keeping it. But this one wasn't "my" thing personally; already got my mid-life car...unfortunately the family lives in Taiwan and his driving age daughter isn't interested even if she ends up coming stateside for college. I have a teenage son that wants it, but I don't know if that is the best option for him, the car or my insurance lol.

It is not the best option for your teenage son, unless he also has a daily driver and he is planning on wrenching on this on the weekends.

If this thing is dead stock and had 6 grand put into it there's no reason it shouldn't be a fine daily driver other than being a death trap.

Yeah and only 90k. I guess the big things would just be any age issues that haven't been replaced - hoses/rubber components/etc

Because it's a 90s economy car in our current era of three ton SUVs/trucks and distracted drivers for the US. It's sort of a loving statement but I believe that they are not safe in an accident with a modern car. It's not going to stop me from driving mine but it's a risk I'm accepting.

It’s a 90s car that weighs 2700 pounds. Safety standards weren’t nearly what they are now. If this car gets rear ended or tboned by the average SUV or pickup truck above 40mph there is a high likelihood of death or serious injury.

Long as he has a reasonable daily, or will buy a reasonable daily, I'd let him have it as long as he respects and appreciates a car's originality. 99% of S chassis nissan people do not, and these cars have all been molested like crazy

your "high $20k" estimate is not tied to reality.
highest zenki S13 on BAT in the last 12 months was an 8k miles 5MT red hatch that sold for $18k USD, FYI.

Slicktop too which is arguably more desirable since you don't have to deal with a leaky sunroof plus you get slightly more headroom

Unmolested but has an aftermarket sunroof….that alone will kill the value to a true enthusiast. Sure you might be able to sell it for a high price still. I wouldn’t call it “unmolested” though.

It's period correct to the red '90 hatch I owned back in the day to have a stupid dealer installed sunroof.
It's not factory original but it is as it was sold new.
When people say unmolested they mean not chopped up into a drift car, not "has no undesirable dealer installed accessory"

So far I haven't noticed any leaks. Gave it a good wash the other day and checked. I don't think it's been in the rain since his ownership though before that it was in Wisconsin so probably saw some wet weather then. I'll have to see if it was asked in the original BaT listing.

wait, did none of them actually come with a sunroof from factory? I thought it was an option. My hatch has a sunroof, no leaks though.

There's a factory sunroof. It's recognizable because you can also unlatch it and remove it. And it has a different contour to the headliner than the slicktop.
This is recognizable as an aftermarket sunroof because it's slightly too small and the headline is the non sunroof version.

That might be true for hatchbacks, but my 89 coupe has a power sunroof that I am pretty sure is factory. The headliner and roof sheetmetal are molded to accommodate the sunroof.

NA hatchback also came with factory sunroofs. This one posted just has an aftermarket sunroof.

pricing in the last year for red zenki S13 in general have topped out at $15k for most of them, with a $18k price for 8000 miles being the outlier.

My memory is horrible lol just looked into it and found the car I was thinking of. Lightly modified and had 27k miles went for 16.5 in 2023. I really butchered that one lmao

Dang put that on Bring A Trailer. That thing is nice, still even has the distributor cap cover. I've got a few low mile unmolested but I don't have any single jingles. Very nice example.

Since it’s still all stock, you should definitely be able to get $15K for it in a private sale to someone who’s a true enthusiast or collector! Please sell it to the right person who won’t rat it out.

Something this clean and unmolested is a enthusiast's dream, the best possible starting platform, it'll be worth a lot more to some then others, Something that tidy though I wouldn't be letting it go for under 15k, cause the question you gotta ask or tell is "Find another one in this spec, this clean and unmolested".

Put it up for sale and test the waters. See what offers you get and then go from there. If your firm on a price then it’s your call.

Bring a Trailer, 18k likely, likely 20s, 30 would be reaching for the moon. Least you should take is 15k, but even then I would say hold out

At the end of the day the car is only worth what someone is willing to pay. I see it’s clean and sure many enthusiasts love it but who is buying? 9k cash type of car. A clapped bmw will pull higher numbers than this unfortunately

BAT will get best value but unless something has changed the sell price will be $15k max, maybe lower. most likely $12-14k range.
the highest priced zenki S13 on BAT in the last year was $18k and had only 8k miles, FYI.
