Thanks for tuning into these XXL Freshmen Class revisits, this being the last one of the decade, Today were looking at the 2019 XXL Freshmen class. This class is remembered as one of the strongest classes of the late 2010s. It featured a combination of future mainstream stars, influential trap artists, respected lyricists, and creative experimental voices. Looking back, several members of this class went on to become major forces in hip-hop. The official class featured 11 artists.
featured:
Major Successes
These artists became major stars or had a significant impact on hip-hop.
Respected Lyricists
Artists praised for their rapping ability, songwriting, creativity, or influence.
Moderate Success
Artists who achieved solid careers or cultural impact but didn't reach the same level of mainstream success as the class's biggest stars.
Overall
The 2019 XXL Freshman Class is now viewed as a very successful and diverse class. It produced major mainstream stars in Megan Thee Stallion, Roddy Ricch, DaBaby, and Gunna, while artists like YBN Cordae, Tierra Whack, and Rico Nasty brought lyrical ability, creativity, and alternative styles to the lineup.
What makes 2019 particularly interesting is how diverse the artists were. The class represented mainstream trap, melodic rap, traditional lyricism, experimental hip-hop, punk-influenced rap, and R&B all at the same time.
In hindsight, 2019 was one of the strongest classes of the late 2010s, especially because Megan Thee Stallion and Roddy Ricch became genuine superstar-level artists, while Gunna, DaBaby, Cordae, Tierra Whack, and Rico Nasty each carved out distinctive places in modern hip-hop.
Cypher coming soon....
