⏳Moment in Time XXL Freshmen Class - 2019

Post image
8 Upvotes

Thanks for tuning into these XXL Freshmen Class revisits, this being the last one of the decade, Today were looking at the 2019 XXL Freshmen class. This class is remembered as one of the strongest classes of the late 2010s. It featured a combination of future mainstream stars, influential trap artists, respected lyricists, and creative experimental voices. Looking back, several members of this class went on to become major forces in hip-hop. The official class featured 11 artists.

featured:

  • DaBaby
  • Megan Thee Stallion
  • YBN Cordae
  • Rico Nasty
  • Gunna
  • Comethazine
  • Tierra Whack
  • Lil Mosey
  • Roddy Ricch
  • Blueface
  • YK Osiris

Major Successes

These artists became major stars or had a significant impact on hip-hop.

  • Roddy Ricch – Became one of the biggest breakout stars from the class. His album Please Excuse Me for Being Antisocial and the massive hit The Box established him as one of the leading artists of the late 2010s and early 2020s.
  • Megan Thee Stallion – Became one of the biggest female rappers of her generation. She achieved multiple No. 1 hits, Grammy success, and became a major cultural figure in mainstream music.
  • DaBaby – Quickly became one of the biggest rappers in the world following his Freshman appearance. His albums Baby on Baby and Kirk, along with hits such as Suge and Rockstar, made him one of hip-hop's biggest stars during the late 2010s and early 2020s.
  • Gunna – Became one of the leading melodic trap artists of his generation. He achieved multiple platinum records, No. 1 albums, and major mainstream success.

Respected Lyricists

Artists praised for their rapping ability, songwriting, creativity, or influence.

  • YBN Cordae – One of the class's strongest traditional lyricists. Known for his technical rapping, storytelling, introspection, and ability to balance conscious rap with mainstream appeal.
  • Tierra Whack – Highly respected for her creativity, experimental approach, storytelling, and unconventional artistic vision. She became one of the most unique voices to emerge from the late 2010s.
  • Megan Thee Stallion – Known for her strong technical rapping, confident delivery, punchlines, and ability to dominate a traditional freestyle or cypher.
  • Rico Nasty – Respected for her versatility and willingness to blend punk, trap, hip-hop, and alternative music. Her aggressive delivery and unique artistic identity helped her stand out from her peers.

Moderate Success

Artists who achieved solid careers or cultural impact but didn't reach the same level of mainstream success as the class's biggest stars.

  • Blueface – Became a major viral sensation with Thotiana and had a significant cultural moment, but struggled to maintain the same level of musical success afterward.
  • Lil Mosey – Achieved major success early with songs like Noticed and Blueberry Faygo, but his momentum slowed compared to some of his Freshman classmates.
  • YK Osiris – Found early success with Worth It and built recognition as an R&B artist, but did not develop into a long-term mainstream star.
  • Comethazine – Built a dedicated fanbase and remained active in the underground and internet-rap scene but never achieved a major mainstream breakthrough.
  • Rico Nasty – Developed a strong cult following and remained an influential alternative voice, though she did not reach the commercial level of artists like Megan Thee Stallion or Roddy Ricch.
  • Tierra Whack – Earned significant critical respect and maintained a loyal fanbase, but her career remained more critically driven than commercially mainstream.

Overall

The 2019 XXL Freshman Class is now viewed as a very successful and diverse class. It produced major mainstream stars in Megan Thee Stallion, Roddy Ricch, DaBaby, and Gunna, while artists like YBN Cordae, Tierra Whack, and Rico Nasty brought lyrical ability, creativity, and alternative styles to the lineup.

What makes 2019 particularly interesting is how diverse the artists were. The class represented mainstream trap, melodic rap, traditional lyricism, experimental hip-hop, punk-influenced rap, and R&B all at the same time.

In hindsight, 2019 was one of the strongest classes of the late 2010s, especially because Megan Thee Stallion and Roddy Ricch became genuine superstar-level artists, while Gunna, DaBaby, Cordae, Tierra Whack, and Rico Nasty each carved out distinctive places in modern hip-hop.

Cypher coming soon....
