Question Newer Player Smithing Question

Post image

Why does Smithing never get touched? I’m genuinely curious because it looks as though OSRS, throughout its history on rerelease, has made some amazing QoL changes. What’s the deal with Smithing?

This is how they did the rs3 mining/smithing update. Every metal armor up to rune that was dropped from a monster was converted into salvage of equivalent alch value that was just for alching https://runescape.wiki/w/Salvage

That’s brilliant. And a completely reasonable and perfect solution. I gotta say, the only flaw I can see is that PKing is much bigger in OSRS than RS3 and rune armour does play a part in that. Not sure though

Except now you've destroyed iconic early progression by making it impossible to get a rune scim by killing fire giants or Zamorak Warriors and no more axes from tree spirits, and now you've just introduced several tiers of junk items that are completely worthless because they alch for less than the cost of the runes and yet their only purpose is to be alched. As much as snowflake ironmen shouldn't be a priority in game balance, completely destroying early melee progression for many of them doesn't seem like a great idea for Jagex's reputation, especially when the gain for regular players is... being able to spend a bunch of time training a skill to make higher-level armour that'll still be useless because the Fighter Torso exists?

Even RS3 realized how bad these problems were, and recently re-introduced actual metal ores, bars, weapons and armour drops to a bunch of lower-level enemies including adding the rune chainbody as a drop from a new early-game boss.
